Benitez to be silenced by Chairmen
      Nov 09, 2008 01:13:26 pm
I thought America was the world's greatest democracy?  ;)

      From The Telegraph

Liverpool board to impose 'gagging' clause in manager Rafael Benitez's new contract

Liverpool owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks are set to include a gagging clause in manager Rafael Benitez's new contract to prevent the Spaniard from publicly discussing internal problems.

The two Americans have finally agreed to discuss Benitez's future after months of uncertainty, but reports now suggest that if he wants to stay, there will be provisos to agree to.

Following the fallout at the club earlier this year which saw Benitez come close to losing his job, Gillett and Hicks will make the offer in order to prevent any further rifts between manager and board.

After Liverpool's fantastic start to the season, an agreement to discuss any contract extension suggests that the owners' relationship with Benitez is strengthening, and, moreover, that they now recognise him as the man who can lead the club towards winning silverware.

Benitez has made no secret of how anxious he is to get a deal sorted by the end of November to secure his long-term future with the club.

"I want the contract done quickly, because the team is playing well," he said.

"I do not want to be talking about this for weeks and months.

"The team is very strong - you can see the progress. There is a new stadium soon, and I want to be part of the future of Liverpool."

You would be surprised what people will agree to when they get offered a nice big fat contract.

It's not his job to discuss internal problems.. But a gagging clause sounds like a contract orientated rape.

That is a very good point.

Just makes me wonder why they'd want him to be gagged in the space in between, though.

Sounds to me like they are up to something and with the 'gag' on Rafa he cant use the media to stop the and let the cat out the bag so to speak, obviously this worries the gruesome twosome.

So what could the deadly duo be up to that Rafa wont like but will be powerless to expose and will have to grin and bare it.

Totally agree. No way Rafa (or Montse - a lawyer herself) will allow Rafa to sign that.

So much for democracy,The yanks will not succeed in gagging RAFA  because they will have to gag all the supporters and that will never happen.I would put this crap down to the media creating a story for their own ends.As far as i am aware RAfA and his agent ,Hicks and Gillette have not started discussing the new contract yet so where do the media get their imformation from.

If I were Rafa I'd sign it and say what the F**k I wanted to who the F**k I wanted.
After all, the two American tw*ts sign up to purchasing our great franchise sorry club, then promptly ignored every promise and undertaking they made.

First time I've heard of something like this ever being done in football, it's a bit daft really as a contract only lasts as long as Rafa stays with us, once he has gone he can say what he likes unless they want some sort of gagging order that covers any books once he leaves, it will all come down to the fine print and what the asbo (whoops slip of the tongue there) I mean the contract covers.....

I agree 100%. If he gets on with the job properly then he doesn't have to moan to the press about anything does he? His job is to manage the team, create a great team and train the team to win every game possible.

However, with the yanks having the idea to put such a sticky clause in Rafa's contract then doesn't it create worries about what exactly is going to happen in the future if they stay in charge?

Was hardly Benitez discussing internal problems last year was it?

You must be joking, what if they sell all the top stars from underneath him, they are money men pure and simple. Benitez needs an out to get the information into the media to expose their money driven exploits and they know it

You cant just manage a team if you havent got the players to manage and with him silelnced they could blame him when it all turns out wrong and paint a picture of bad management.
