Got to have turned into one of the most boring sports on tv .

For all its faults today it can still have the ability to thrill and entertain above most other sports. See Verstappen's last 15 laps in Brazil two weeks ago.

Lewis Hamilton the better driver but engine blowups cost him. I'm not a religious F1 follower but today was a great advert for it.

Shame that the Mercedes management don't think that way.

Like most things though  when you start introducing too many rules it starts to get diluted , bringing back re fuelling would be a good start .

Me too. I liked the refuelling era. Drivers had to drive on the maximum for the whole race. You had to be another different kind of beast to drive full pelt in a V10. Think it would have been much harder, almost impossible for someone like Verstappen to have stepped into that sport at the age of 17 with cars from 15 years ago or so. The cars today seem a lot more forgiving.

Agree with that , that in part is one of the reasons ive been turned off by it, its all too sterile for me  can you imagine the outcry if a driver stopped by the track to give another a lift back on the side of his car , see Mansell those were proper races .

Incredibly audacious and dignified way to leave the sport. Never seen anything like it. What a gentleman - he will be missed.

The question is - who replaces him?

Heard Werlhein mentioned quite a bit already. Don't know about him though. Unproven and wasn't as dominant a driver as I thought he'd be at Manor. With new regulations next year as well Red Bull should be right up there so there's no room for tokenism/complacency. Mercedes can't afford to have a Lewis/Heikki dynamic from 2008 where they won the drivers title but lost the constructors because Heikki was such a poor second driver.

The pressure of teaming Hamilton is immense...

Did you hear Rosberg's radio commentary partically pleading with the team to get Hamilton to allow him to pass & he will give back position for Hamilton to win...

      Not suprised..

I don't blame Nico for retiring, he's 33 now and been racing since he was a kid.  He's also just had a child and propbably remembers his own childhood of barely seeing his Dad whilst he was racing.

What more does he need to prove?  He has enough money to live comfortably and it takes a lot of time and effort to stay competetive in this game.  With all the young guns coming into F1 he knows it's only a matter of time before he's replaced.

Would Max venture there?  Wouldn't suprise me in the slightest.

Can't see it being for next year debs but wouldn't rule it out in the future. For some reason I think alonso might get it. Hope not though.

No way Lewis would have him there mate, they'll go for a young driver I reckon.

I think it was the right decision, I can understand the logistics of being away from family & as you said he has done what he set out to...

      FairPlay to him.

My money is on Wehrlein. I can't imagine McLaren will want to release Alonso from his contract, they need an experienced drive to team up with Vandoorne next season. Excited to watch him next year too. He'd be the answer of a good pub quiz question: the first driver to get a point for McLaren this season? :D

      Stunned by this.
      What a call.
You can see his reasoning for this.

      Going out on top.
Young family that Motorsport is keeping him away from.
When we saw the celebrations it was obvious how much it meant to him/them.
Maybe a venting/release. Maybe he'd told her he'd retire if he won.

      Happiness. Relief.
      Fair fucks to him.
      Going out on top.

Get Pascal in that car. Quick.

I'd like to see Alonso go there, possibly the only racer in the field who can match Hamilton for pace.

F1 is very dull these days, would bring a bit of interest back to see those two renew their rivalry and Alonso will be desperate to add to his 2 world titles.

      Alonso to replace Rosberg?

If not then I think it will be the end for Alonso like he has suggested already.
