Parliament Square peace campaigner Brian Haw dies

Peace campaigner Brian Haw has died after "a long hard fight" against lung cancer, his family has announced.

Mr Haw, 62, set up a camp in London's Parliament Square in 2001 in protest against UK and US foreign policy.

In March 2011, a High Court ruling obtained by London's mayor forced him to move his camp on to the pavement.

In a statement posted on Mr Haw's website, his family said he had died on 18 June in Germany, where he had been receiving medical treatment.

They said Mr Haw, from Redditch, Worcestershire, passed away in his sleep in no pain.

An additional statement on his website from his campaign representatives said: "Brian showed great determination and courage during the many long hard years he led his Peace Campaign in Parliament Square, during which it is well documented that he was relentlessly persecuted by the authorities which eventually took its toll on his health.

"Brian showed the same courage and determination in his battle with cancer. He was keenly aware of and deeply concerned that so many civilians in Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine did not have access to the same treatments that were made available to him.

"Parliament, the police, and courts etc, should forever be ashamed of their disgraceful behaviour towards Brian."

Andrew Burgin, from the Stop the War Coalition, said Mr Haw's death was a tragic loss.

"Brian was a fantastic inspiration to us all, a stalwart of the peace camp," he said. "We hope that his work goes on."

Labour MP Jeremy Corbyn praised Mr Haw for reminding MPs "of the consequences of their decisions".

Fellow Labour MP Paul Flynn paid tribute to the peace campaigner on Twitter, saying: "Brian Haw's 10 years of 24/7 protest in all weathers against the futile wars in Iraq/Helmand deserves the nation's thanks and admiration."

Labour's John McDonnell, who served as a character witness for Mr Haw when he was arrested, tweeted that he respected Mr Haw's commitment to his campaign for peace.

Mr Haw set up camp in Parliament Square Gardens on 2 June 2001, in response to sanctions against Iraq. His protest grew broader after the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq.

Supporters at the camp have left his camping chair in place and his collection of bleak war photos at the site remains untouched.

Over the past decade, Mr Haw fought a lengthy battle with the authorities to keep his camp in place.

In April 2002 Westminster City Council began legal action under the Highways Act to remove his camp on the grounds that he was a "nuisance", but the case never came to court. It later succeeded in limiting the hours he could use a megaphone but failed in an attempt to remove his placards for "obstruction" and "unlawful advertising".

Legislation passed in 2005 banned unauthorised protests within a square mile of Parliament but Mr Haw's protest was initially ruled to be outside the Act because it had been established before it came into effect.

In May 2006, however, the Court of Appeal said Mr Haw would need police permission to continue the protest. This was granted, but police limited his protest site to an area 3m wide by 1m deep by 3m high. They later tried to seize almost all his placards on the grounds he had breached those limits and left the site open to terrorists but a judge in 2007 ruled he had no case to answer.

In May 2010, Mr Haw was charged with obstructing police during searches of tents on the green. Speaking after a court appearance, he set out his intention to remain in the square for the rest of his life.

"We're there because our country is committing infanticide, genocide, the looting of nations. I'm determined to be there until they kill me. How much longer will that be?"

In March this year, Mayor of London Boris Johnson won a possession order to evict Mr Haw and other campaigners from Parliament Square Gardens, which is owned by the Greater London Authority (GLA).

Mr Haw and many of the protesters subsequently moved on to the pavement - owned by Westminster Council. Westminster Council has been seeking a removal order, on the grounds the camp is obstructing the public highway.

If the council wins its court bid, the camp could be permanently removed.

Mr Haw was born in 1949, initially living in Barking, Essex. He was a member of the merchant navy, ran a removals business and worked as a carpenter.

An evangelical Christian, his faith saw him visit Northern Ireland during the Troubles, and the killing fields of Cambodia.

He also worked with troubled youngsters in Redditch, Worcestershire, where he lived with his wife Kay and his seven children before starting his Parliament Square protest.

He said the children of Iraq and other countries were "every bit as valuable and worthy of love as my precious wife and children".

"I want to go back to my own kids and look them in the face again, knowing that I've done all I can to try and save the children of Iraq and other countries who are dying because of my government's unjust, amoral, fear - and money-driven policies," he said.

Sad to hear of Brian Haw's death. While UK bombed Iraq a man in a hat shouting in Parliament square was the nearest we came to sanity.
R.I.P Brian. Have the greatest of respect for what you did.

Surprised this one slipped through the net:

Voice of Zippy and the Daleks Roy Skelton dies

Voice actor found fame on Rainbow as well as Doctor Who

Rainbow's Zippy and George, whose voices Roy Skelton created.

Roy Skelton, the voice of the Daleks and George and Zippy from Rainbow, has died aged 79.

He brought Doctor Who's arch-enemies to life between 1967 and 1988, and also provided voices for the Cybermen.

But viewers will probably know him best as the voices of Zippy and George, the orange and pink puppets from ITV's long running children's show Rainbow.

Geoffrey Hayes, who fronted Rainbow, told BBC News that Skelton was "fabulous at improvising if something went wrong".

"The most wonderful thing was if Zippy and George were having an argument between themselves, it sounded like he'd double-tracked it as they seemed to be talking over each other. It was a wonderful technique and I don't know how he did it."

Rainbow was axed in 1992, but Skelton reprised Zippy's voice in the BBC1 retro-drama Ashes to Ashes in 2008, and again in a special puppet edition of Weakest Link.

Skelton's agent Carole Deaner told MediaGuardian.co.uk: "He was an unassuming and brilliant man ... He had been ill for some time and was in a wheelchair. We kept hoping he was going to improve but sadly he did not. He was a lovely man, everyone who worked with him said that."

In addition to writing around 100 scripts for Rainbow, Skelton also wrote Naughty Rainbow, a humerous double-entendre laden version that became a cult hit.

Skelton's wife Hilary told Mediaguardian.co.uk: "Roy had a great sense of humour. He wrote Naughty Rainbow for a competition. We still have the original script."

She said that the Brighton-based actor and musician was not the first voice of Zippy: "Originally he was played by Peter Hawkins, a great friend of Roy's who he worked with on Doctor Who.

"Zippy was a very benign sort of puppet then. Roy felt he needed to have a bit of an alter ego so he changed him to be a troublesome character. George came along later as they didn't have a foil for Zippy."

Hilary added: "Roy loved going to work every day. His first love had been theatre but he brought theatre to Rainbow."

She said Skelton had requested a "green funeral", to be buried in a cardboard coffin which he wanted people to write on.

R.I.P Ryan Dunn (from Jackass).

Ryan Dunn, star of MTV TV and film franchise Jackass, was killed in a car crash early on Monday morning.

The 34-year-old and another passenger died at about 2.30am local time when the car they were travelling hit a tree and burst into flames in West Goshen, Pennsylvania, NBC Philadelphia reported.

Dunn was identified by his tattoos, according to a witness who was on the scene when the bodies were pulled from the wreckage.

The mother of Dunn's Jackass co-star Bam Margera reportedly called a local radio station to confirm that he was killed in a car accident.

Dunn was one of the stars of Jackass, the MTV show in which he and a group including Margera and Johnny Knoxville conducted crude, ridiculous and often dangerous pranks and stunts.

Jackass ran for three series on MTV from 2000, followed by three movies and several spin-off shows.

He was probably my favourite of the lot.

"Jackass" co-star dies in car crash in Pennsylvania

By Dave Warner, Editing by Barbara Goldberg and Christine Kearney | Reuters – 14 hours ago

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - Ryan Dunn, a co-star of the "Jackass" movie franchise, died on Monday when a sports car he was driving careened off a highway in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and burst into flames, police said.

Dunn was driving his 2007 Porsche, which police found "fully engulfed in flames" in a wooded area in outer Philadelphia, police in the West Goshen Township said Monday.

An unidentified passenger also died in the crash that occurred early Monday morning.
The daredevil personality, 34, part of the crew in the top-grossing "Jackass" movie franchise that specialized in risky pranks and gross-out stunts, lived in nearby West Chester, Pennsylvania, police said.

A police statement said a "preliminary investigation revealed that speed may have been a contributing factor to the accident."
The Ohio-born Dunn posted a photo to his Twitter account shortly before the crash which seemed to show him drinking with friends. On his Twitter account he described himself as a "TV personality, movie star, automotive enthusiast."

In 2005, Dunn was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and entered a first offender's program that allowed him to clear his record after a certain period of good behaviour, said Patrick Carmody, Assistant District Attorney in Chester County.

Besides the Jackass movie franchise that has grossed more than $330 million (203 million pounds) worldwide, according to tracking website Box Office Mojo, Dunn also starred in "Haggard: The Movie," an indie comedy in which the tattooed, bearded, daredevil played himself.

Horrible news. Strikes a nerve for me.

RIP Dunn.

Police Academy star Bubba Smith dies aged 66

Bubba Smith, famed for his role as gentle giant Moses Hightower in the '80s comedies, was found dead in his L.A. home on Wednesday.

Born Charles Aaron Smith, the man affectionately known as 'Bubba' began his career as an American football player in the NFL in 1967 and played professionally for the Baltimore Colts, Oakland Raiders and Houston Oilers.

When his time as an athlete ended in 1976, he carved himself a new career as an actor. And it was in 1984 that he shot to international stardom with 'Police Academy'.

His character, Moses Hightower, was a florist before joining the force and became a staple of the series which saw affable crook Mahoney (Steve Guttenberg) and a team of misfits including sound-effects specialists Jones (Michael Winslow), incomprehensible Zed (Bobcat Goldthwaite), gun-obsessive Tackleberry (David Graf) and sexy trainee Thompson (a young Kim Cattrall) seek to earn their badges under accident-prone Academy chief, Commandant Eric Lassard (George Gaynes).

Smith reprised his role as the softly-spoken strongman in six of the seven films that graced cinemas over the course of  the '80s, only bowing out for the seventh instalment, 'Police Academy: Mission to Moscow', which revisited some of the cops in 1994.

The 6 foot 7 star also appeared in several TV shows, including 'Half Nelson' and several smaller film releases, but it is still for his stint in the slapstick cop capers that he is best remembered.

Smith's body was discovered at his home by a caretaker, and a coroner is investigating the cause of death. However, it is believed he died of natural causes and police are not treating the death as suspicious.

http://uk.movies.yahoo.com/blog/article/228934/police-academy-star-bubba-smith-dies-aged-66.html

'Natural causes' at 66, that's no age.
Those films get a lot of stick but I know I enjoyed them as a kid and Hightower was one of the best characters.
RIP, Bubba

Former Japan international Naoki Matsuda dies, aged 34

He death aged 34 was announced by his club Matsumoto Yamaga of the Japan Football League, the third-tier division, where he moved this year after 16 years at J-League first-division side Yokohama Marinos.

Matsuda fell into a coma after a warm-up run on Tuesday morning. He was rushed to hospital, where he was put on life support.

Fans, along with past and present team-mates, flocked to the hospital in the mountain city of Matsumoto, 180 kms northwest of Tokyo, as Matsuda fought for his life.

His death came just over two weeks after Japan's women's team won the World Cup for the first time.

"I never got to know Matsuda directly but knew what a great player he was having watched him in the J-League last year," Japan coach Alberto Zaccheroni said.

Matsuda, known as a gutsy player and valued for his six foot height, was capped 40 times.

The right-back played all four of Japan's matches at the 2002 World Cup, when the Blue Samurai reached the last 16 at home.

But his international career ended in 2005 when he fell out with then national coach and Brazilian legend Zico.

"I can't believe it," said Japan Football Association technical director Hiromi Hara.

"I have managed or coached teams playing against him many times and know what a big presence he had," Hara said.

Matsuda said in his farewell speech to Yokohama fans in December that he lived for the game. "Seriously, I love football for the heck of it," he said

Again such a young age.

RIP Naoki Matsuda.

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/great-australian-wwii-heroine-dies-98-london-060650478.html

Nancy Wake, Australia's greatest World War II heroine and a prominent figure in the French Resistance known as the "The White Mouse" for her ability to evade the Germans, has died in London.
Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard said the woman who was once the Gestapo's most wanted person, was "a devastatingly effective saboteur and spy".
"Nancy Wake was a woman of exceptional courage and resourcefulness whose daring exploits saved the lives of hundreds of Allied personnel and helped bring the Nazi occupation of France to an end," Gillard said.
Wake, who died in a London hospital on Sunday just days short of her 99th birthday, was the nation's most decorated servicewoman from WWII, holding France's Legion d'Honneur, Britain's George Medal and the US Medal of Freedom.
Born in Wellington, New Zealand, she grew up in Australia and politicians in both countries led tributes to the woman who survived several firefights with the enemy, being shot at in a pursuit and a brief imprisonment during the war.
New Zealand's Veterans' Affairs Minister Judith Collins described Wake as "a woman of exceptional courage and tenacity, who cast aside all regard for her own safety and put the cause of freedom first".
Australian National Party leader Warren Truss said Wake's heroic achievements "are the stuff of legend".
"And all Australians feel very proud of this wonderful woman," he said.

And the freedom she fought for is being utilised on the streets of London tonight.

RIP Len Ganley

Northern Ireland snooker referee Len Ganley dies

Len Ganley, the snooker referee from Northern Ireland who took charge of four World Championship finals, has died at the age of 68.

Ganley, who suffered from diabetes, died at home in Lurgan after his health deteriorated over recent weeks, World Snooker has announced.

The former milkman and bus driver became the best-known referee during snooker's boom years in the 1980s.

Ganley was awarded the MBE for charity work and services to snooker in 1994.

He officiated at world finals in 1983, 1987, 1990 and 1993 before retiring from refereering in 1999.

Six-times world champion Steve Davis, who included the 1983 and 1987 titles among his haul, paid tribute to Ganley.

Davis said: "Len did a very good job of being a referee and a personality at the same time.

"A referee is supposed to be unseen and he liked the limelight, but he still managed to do the job properly.

"He was a great character off the table, but in the arena he was an excellent referee.

"He knew the game as a player, having made century breaks himself, so when he was in charge of your match it was nice to know how well he understood the game."

Ganley's funeral will take place on Wednesday morning at St Paul's Chapel in Lurgan, with the family requesting donations to the Paul Hunter Foundation rather than flowers.
