      Reds agree Toure deal
Liverpool Football Club can today announce they have agreed a deal in principal with Kolo Toure to join the club on July 1.

The powerful defender will be registered as a Reds player when his current deal with Manchester City expires.

Toure, 32, will arrive at Anfield boasting a wealth of experience having represented both City and Arsenal in the Barclays Premier League since switching to English football in 2002 and add depth to Brendan Rodgers' defensive ranks ahead of 2013-14.

The Ivory Coast international, signed by Arsene Wenger from homeland club ASEC Mimosas, made his Gunners debut in the 2002 Community Shield against Liverpool at the Millennium Stadium.

Originally deployed in midfield or at full-back, Toure was moved to centre-back for the 2003-04 season and helped Arsenal go the entire league season unbeaten as they swept to the title, adding to the FA Cup they'd lifted the previous season.

He added a second FA Cup medal in 2005, while a year later he was part of the Arsenal side that reached the Champions League final against Barcelona having scored the only goal of the two-legged semi-final with Villarreal.

After more than 200 appearances for the Londoners, Toure was firmly established as one of the finest centre-backs in the league - and Manchester City duly swooped to sign him in the summer of 2009 and immediately appointed him club captain.

During his four years at Eastlands, he lifted another Premier League title and FA Cup in over 100 appearances for City.

On the international stage, Toure has represented the Ivory Coast at two African Cup of Nations tournaments and two World Cup finals. He has more than a century of caps for his country, for whom he has also worn the skipper's armband.

He'll become the first Ivorian to play for Liverpool when he joins the club.

      10 facts about Kolo Toure
Liverpool today announced an agreement in principle to sign defender Kolo Toure – but how much do you know about the Ivorian? Brush up on your knowledge with our 10 facts about the centre-back.

      1. Toure's trophy haul boasts 11 honours, including league titles at all three of his previous clubs - ASEC Mimosas, Arsenal and Manchester City. His other medals came from winning the FA Cup and Community Shield on three occasions each, along with lifting the CAF Super Cup at the age of 18.

      2. Kolo is one of three brothers plying their trade in professional football, with his siblings Yaya and Ibrahim playing for Manchester City and Al-Nasr respectively. He had previously played alongside Yaya since the start of the 2010-11 campaign, when his sibling arrived at the Etihad Stadium from Barcelona.

      3. Highlighting his leadership qualities, Toure has captained Arsenal, City and the Ivory Coast national team in his career. While accumulating 105 international caps, the defender has been a runner-up in the Africa Cup of Nations twice and has appeared in five matches at the World Cup. Toure has also found the net six times for his country.

      4. Toure is the first Ivorian to join Liverpool in the club's history and becomes the latest player from the African continent to represent the Reds. Moroccan winger Oussama Assaidi was the last African to sign for the club. Kolo is the eighth player Brendan Rodgers has brought to Anfield since being appointed manager in the summer of 2012.

      5. Having played as a winger or a striker in the very early stages of his career, Toure reverted to a defensive midfield role before eventually being deployed as a defender.  After initially being a utility player for Arsenal, the 32-year-old consolidated his position at the heart of their defence and has remained a centre-back ever since.

      6. In a quirky twist of fate, Toure made his first-ever Arsenal appearance against Liverpool in the FA Community Shield in 2002 and also donned the Gunners' armband for the first time when facing the Reds in the League Cup five years later.

      7. Toure is the fifth player to swap Manchester City for Liverpool, following in the footsteps of Patrick Finnerhan, Matt Busby, Robbie Fowler and Craig Bellamy. The centre-back's free transfer means each of the last three deals have included no money changing hands. Eight players have travelled in the opposite direction, with the most recent being Nigel Clough in January 1996.

      8. During his spells with former clubs, the Ivorian clashed with the Reds 21 times - he ran out victorious on 10 occasions, drawing seven times and losing just four matches. The defender found the net against Liverpool once, in a 3-0 defeat to Arsenal in November 2006.

      9. Kolo should not be short of conversation with Australian goalkeeper Brad Jones when he is introduced to the Liverpool squad - the pair share a birthday, March 19. The Ivorian is one year older than his new teammate, however - Toure was born in 1981, while Jones was born in 1982. The aforementioned Nigel Clough also celebrates his birthday on that date - he was born in 1966.

      10. Brendan Rodgers is Toure's fourth different club manager since arriving on English shores, and the fourth different nationality the Ivorian has worked under. Frenchman Arsene Wenger brought the defender to Arsenal, Welshman Mark Hughes signed him for Manchester City, where Italian Roberto Mancini took the reins shortly after. Now Toure will look forward to working with Northern Irishman Rodgers.

Happy enough, good experience and a good player. Whether he still has it is another question. All that said, nice to see we are moving quickly, just over a week since the season finished.

Manchester City defender Kolo Toure will miss the start of next season after being handed a six-month ban from all football for failing a drugs test.
The ban is back-dated to 2 March, when Toure's provisional suspension began.
He is free to play from 2 September, but will also be target-tested for a period of two years from 26 May.
"This has been a difficult period, and I am sad to have missed the team's triumph of securing Champions League football and the FA Cup," Toure said.
"But I am relieved that I will be able to return to football in September and thank the FA's commission for their understanding."
An independent regulatory commission, which could have issued anything from a warning to a two-year ban by way of punishment, reached the verdict after a hearing on Thursday.
Toure admitted the offence - his first - contrary to Regulation 3 of the FA Doping Regulations 2010-11. But the panel took into consideration the circumstances behind his use of water tablets belonging to his wife.
On 4 March, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger - who brought Toure to England by signing him - revealed: "He wants to control his weight a little bit because that's where he has some problems and he took the product of his wife.
"He is a boy that has a clean life, a very honest living. I just think it is a mistake."
Headed up by Christopher Quinlan QC, the commission were satisfied Toure did not intend to enhance sporting performance or to mask the use of a performance-enhancing substance.
Man City's QC Adam Lewis suggested the ban should be no longer than three months but the FA commission disagreed.
Quinlan said: "The criterion in assessing any reduction in what would otherwise be the minimum penalty of two years' suspension is the player's degree of fault. The player accepted he was at fault and with that concession we agree.
"He was at fault in the limited and perfunctory efforts he made in relation to the water tablets; the checks he made in relation to those tablets were inadequate and fell some way below what it would be reasonable to expect of a professional footballer in these circumstances.
"In fixing the appropriate period of suspension we had regard to all the relevant matters we have read and heard during the course of the hearing.
"The period of suspension suggested by Mr Lewis QC was one not in excess of three months. With respect, we disagree. In our judgment, the appropriate period of suspension is one of six months commencing on 2 March 2011."
The ruling means he cannot participate in any football match or any other football-related activity other than anti-doping education or rehabilitation programmes, until his ban expires.
The decision completes a nightmare season for Toure, which began with him losing the Manchester City captaincy to Carlos Tevez on 18 August.
Toure was tested at the Manchester derby in February, when he was an unused substitute. The Ivory Coast defender was suspended on 3 March after his A-sample tested positive for "a specified substance".http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/m/man_city/9498185.stm

As I said in another thread, signing an experienced player such as Kolo, alongside a youngster thought to be a long term replacement for Carragher (such as Papadopoulos) makes perfect sense on paper. If Touré is anywhere near as good as he used to be is another story. I haven't seen enough lately to judge. I like the logic behind the transfer and I'm looking forward to having him in a red shirt. Hopefully he'll prove to be of good value to us.

Toure viewed as useful squad player, not as a replacement for Carra. Papadopoulos still #LFC's No 1 defensive target.

Kolo Toure to sign for Liverpool on July 1
Experienced centre back to join Reds when Manchester City deal expires

Kolo Toure will join Liverpool FC on a free transfer from Manchester City after agreeing a two-year deal.

The 32-year-old defender finalised personal terms and passed his medical today to become the Reds' first signing of the summer.

Toure’s contract at Eastlands expires at the end of June so he will officially become a Liverpool player on July 1.

Boss Brendan Rodgers has made no secret of his desire to add more experience to his ranks during the transfer window and firmly believes the Ivory Coast international centre-back fits the bill.

Toure has graced the Premier League for more than a decade and has won the title with both Arsenal and Man City.

He is viewed as a valuable squad player rather than as a direct replacement for retired vice-captain Jamie Carragher.

Rodgers’ No 1 defensive target this summer remains Schalke's talented centre-back Kyriakos Papadopoulos with the Reds determined to secure the services of the £12million-rated 21-year-old Greek international.

Liverpool are also keen to sign Sporting Lisbon’s young defender Tiago Ilori, with major doubts surrounding the Anfield futures of both Martin Skrtel and Sebastian Coates.

Skrtel has made it clear he wants to consider his options having fallen out of favour in the second half of last season, while Liverpool are open to offers for Coates.

Toure arrived in England back in 2002 when he signed for Arsenal from ASEC Mimosas in his homeland for a fee of £150,000.

He started out for the Gunners as a midfielder and then played at right-back before Arsene Wenger moved him to centre-back.

In 2003/04 he established a successful partnership with Sol Campbell as they clinched the Premier League title and went through the entire campaign unbeaten. He also won the FA Cup twice during his seven-year stay in North London.

Toure was instrumental in their run to the 2006 Champions League final against Barcelona and a year later he skippered them in the League Cup final defeat to Chelsea.

Liverpool Football Club can today announce they have agreed a deal in principal with Kolo Toure to join the club on July 1. #LFC

      — Liverpool FC(@LFC) May 28, 2013

After 326 appearances for Arsenal, he departed in July 2009 when Manchester City agreed a fee of £16million and he was appointed club captain by Mark Hughes.

He remained a first team regular under Roberto Mancini but in March 2011 he was hit with a six-month ban after failing a drugs test.

Toure tested positive for a doping offence after taking his wife’s diet pills in an effort to lose weight.

He could have faced a two-year suspension but an FA commission decided that he hadn't intended to enhance sporting performance or mask the use of a performance enhancing substance.

Having missed City’s FA Cup final triumph, he returned from his ban to make 14 league appearances as Mancini’s side won the title in 2012.

Last term he played in 18 games in all competitions – to take his tally for City to 102 appearances – before embarking on their end-of-season tour of America.

After returning to the UK, he headed to Merseyside for talks and has accepted Rodgers' offer to join the Reds on a two-year contract.

Toure also boasts a wealth of experience at international level having picked up 105 caps for Ivory Coast and played in the past two World Cups.
