Well one way you could argue it is that without Agger we only kept 3 clean sheets.

It pretty much is haha, just looking at it from a slightly different angle I guess. I highly doubt BR considers these stats at all when choosing his starting XI anyway.

I completely agree!!  IMO, both players can even come off a bit cocky at times because they are so confident in their own abilities with the ball at their feet.  Yet they also seem to have an unerring belief that, even if they do lose the ball, they will just go and win it right back!!  That is the attitude of a proper defender!!  I think Agger used to have that attitude, but for some reason I see a lot less of it in his game these days....

Great stats. Its seems Agger is our best CB. Plenty on here have said the same. Hes also clearly our best CB on the ball and bringing it out of defense. Would hate to see him leave but Im thinking the time has come.

For all the talk about him being a ball-carrying defender, how often does Agger ACTUALLY bring it out of defence and do something useful with it?

In his whole career I can only remember a few occasions and I get the feeling these are constantly played out like that Dominic Matteo run that becomes the accepted reality.

Maybe it's just me but I think that LFC fans over-rate him because of his silky style and the fact he is a good red and has cool tattoos.

Because he looks graceful yes, deceptive and he doesn't actually add to our forward movement most of the time.
Sakho has been mocked for looking clumsy, but he recycles the ball quickly and never gives it away needlessly so which would people favour?
By all accounts Agger should be an ace sweeper but he just hardly ever does that, Reina was better at the passing and picking out movement up front malarkey and he's a goalie.
Agger looks slow to me, slow movement and decision making.

I think this is probably the main reason, but let's be honest..... it's hard not to like a guy who, when the media were reporting that he was going to jump ship and sign for City in 2012, goes out and gets a tattoo of YNWA on his knuckles and told reporters that he would never play for another English side!

And this proves stats are bullshit :D

Glen Johnson looks like Mr Reliable there. Stats don't show he was dawdling around the halfway line and not in the box defending.

Our own eyes will judge Lovren. I can't remember him doing much and i watched Southampton a lot last season so i guess, for a defender, thats a good sign.

Agger is a great defender, but the issue here is not his defending IMO, but his fitness, as he is gets regularly injured, and his concentration. Once a game Agger gives his man a free header during set plays.

I think this is probably the main reason, but let's be honest..... it's hard not to like a guy who, when the media were reporting that he was going to jump ship and sign for City in 2012, goes out and gets a tattoo of YNWA on his knuckles and told reporters that he would never play for another English side!

That's exactly why I posted earlier about LFC and us fans at times being a sentimental bunch for dedication and passion for a player who even when they haven't performed as consistently as we'd expect.

Clean sheets analysis are a bit lazy, aren't they? As if a clean sheets depended solely on the CBs performances; as if a clean sheet against, say, Cardiff City, meant the same as a clean sheet against Man City; and as if conceding a goal (that is, losing a clean sheet) when you're cruising 5-0 was just as bad as conceding a goal in a 0-0 tight game against a good opponent.

I'm not even disputing if Agger is or isn't our best defender - personally I think he isn't, but that's not the point - I just think we can surely do better than number of clean sheets?

I agree. Look at the Gooners game last year up 5-0 and conceded a penalty for a 5-1 and no clean sheet. 2-1 is the same as 1-0 to because you get the same 3 points and the same goal difference of +1. I think we all love Agger but he's not our best CB. I think him and Skrtel just know what the other one is going to do out of instinct. Skrtel I think just over reacts when anyone else is out there because he doesn't have a clue what any of the other CB's are going to do next. He's not very adaptable I think. Just my opinion.

I also understand your point but I wouldn't say it's their individual performances that necessarily leads the team to concede less and have more clean sheets. It can be a wide variety of factors. A CB pair might do everything just perfect but then a midfielder slips and gifts the opposition a goal so there's no clean sheet; or a CB pair might concede a penalty in the 90th minute which is saved by the keeper and the clean sheet is guaranteed.
Indeed; point taken. Truth is I have no issue with the 'Correlation does not imply causation' argument as long as we show consistency with it.

I mean: if I were to use it ['Correlation does not imply causation' argument], to dismiss the stats around Danny, then I couldn't and wouldn't ignore it by claiming (for e.g.) that our 'progress' was down to FSG; nor would it be right for me to claim "Brendan deserves all the credit". Niether could I use (for e.g.) stats to prove how sh*t Borini was but then dismiss stats surrounding Danny - cause that would be F***ing daft.  ;D

As you point out ,the fact that the Agger & Skrtel partnership was present in most of our team's clean sheets, whilst obviously accurate; might well be just coincidence and down to other factors.

Similarly the amount of goals we conceded, when Sakho was playing, might well be down to every other player and many factors but not him and are just coincidence. The thing is tho'; the claim that "all statistics show that they [Danny & Martin] were a better partnership than Skrtel & Sakho" is 100% accurate.

And this proves stats are bullshit :D
Not all stats are bullshit Crouchy - only the stats which prove us wrong.  :D

One thing I will say tho': they are obviously a better indication to what has happened than recollection of the human mind; and way more reliable than any eyewitness account. That's why they are used.

Brendan likes stats - "The team with most possession wins 79% of all games"... "To get into the Champions League you need 70 odd goals".

Here's a Ribby* type stat for you all: - less than 1% of all LFCreds.com members have seen Dejan play more than 1% of all his games yet 90% of us 'know' how brilliant he his.

[* i.e. I could just be making this sh*t up]

It's the point I was trying to make with Diego Mouse.

Even if it is purely coincidence or other factors it would be foolish to discount them as a pair when the facts show we concede less goals and have more clean sheets when they play even if they may not look like they are playing well or are the 'best' partnership.

I happen to think Brendan is looking to 'start again' as it were and would be very surprised if it's not Sakho and Lovren who start the season.

The salient point is; the claim that "all statistics show that they [Danny & Martin] were a better partnership than Skrtel & Sakho" is 100% accurate... irrespective of other arguments which try to skirt or cloud the issue.

If statistics didn't support the claim; if they proved otherwise... the same set of statistics "lazy"  or otherwise, would have been used to 'prove' us wrong.

Put it like this - This season, when Simon, Dejan and Mama keep 18 clean sheets and concede only 20 goals - those same "lazy" stats will be rolled out (and rightly so) ;D

I would play him with Sakho. They can communicate in both English and French plus Mignolet also knows french.

Well, for all the 'stats' used in favour of S&A partnership, they may not appeal to Rodgers come the beginning of this season - hence this threads very existence ,perhaps.

And that may very well be the stat fact of the matter.

      Critical though mate isn't it.

Regardless of whether you think that we conceded more goals than the competition because of personnel, tactics or form the undeniable truth is we gave them all one helluva head start......
Indeed it is Scotia - joking aside... I've said it before but it might be worth reiterating (especially as the odd F**k-tard, or two, have difficulty comprehending the written word) - Unlike some, I honestly couldn't give a flying F**k who plays where as long as Liverpool F.C. are better off/winning when they, whoever 'they' are, play.

What with playing in England I'd expect them to communicate in English personally. That's just my take on things.

I agree. What use is it to the rest of our team if theres people not communicating in the same language.
