GERRARD: THIS SUMMER IS SO IMPORTANT

Paul Eaton 08 May 2008

Steven Gerrard believes a productive summer of transfer activity at Anfield could lead to a title charge next season.
The Liverpool skipper is frustrated the Reds never established themselves as contenders in the race this year, but he has seen enough over the past ten months to suggest Rafa Benitez is closer than ever to moulding a title-challenging squad.

"We always say this every year, but it will be an important summer because we need to keep the momentum," said Gerrard.

"The manager's signings will be important as they always are. I've been lucky as a footballer, and I've won more things that most players, but I'm greedy because I always want more – I want to win as many trophies as I can with Liverpool. That is why the summer is important.

"We are a young team with a lot of promise and if the manager can get the right support then we could take an important step forward.

"We are disappointed we didn't maintain a challenge in the league for longer than we did – the points gap between us and the top two isn't particularly pleasant viewing for anyone here at Anfield. The boss is on record as saying he wants some players, and if we get some of the ones he wants then if they can have the same impact that guys like Fernando Torres, Martin Skrtel and Ryan Babel have had this year we'll have taken a step forward.

"I think there is a hell of a lot more to come from us."

Gerrard also revealed he is intent on remaining with the club and realising his dream of leading the Reds to championship glory.

"I can't see myself ever leaving Liverpool now, and what I would dearly love is to lead this club to the next level that I believe we are capable of reaching," he said.

"I've won trophies here but there's one I'm missing and I want that before I finish playing.

"I don't want to look back and say I have never been in a title race. I can see that the team is getting stronger and stronger and I can see that we are going forward. I feel that we are getting closer and I really believe that."

He is right and we need good players that make an impact immediately. I never saw liverpool win the title 'cos I'm only 16.

I can sense certain frustration coming from Stevie's comments we really need to focus on the transfer market this time around and we have to settle deals early. Mr Parry get your ass out of your head and get to work early.

I am happy stevie has made these comments but I see him being disappointed due to the owners being tight with money Sad

We simply arent being provided with the money we need to sustain a good strong challenge.

I agree with you but surely Rafa could try and spend £10m better than what he's trying. Why Gareth Barry? Why?

Exactly, we all thought we would challenge this season and look whats happened, we tailed off after October and regained some form late on.

We need consistency both in results and in team selection, that is the key to success.

Rafa is capable of bringing us both.

Gerrard comes out every summer to sort of fire up the team and owners, making sure they know how important the league is, both to us and him.

I think he will stay until the end of his career because he is close to if not in his prime now and it would be fitting to help him lift the league title at Anfield

Unless we start picking pts up against the pourer teams like the other top3 do then we will never win number 19 .
Because thats where the key has lyed with united and chelsea scrapping 1-0 wins ,might not be nice football but its 3pts.
An only points make prizes

He hit the nail on the head and hopefully this will make the Yanks and Parryget there act together (at least until DIC take over, surley they would want to leave with some self respect)

After this season when drawn games killed us if you count the matches we should have won but didn't we should have ended up fighting for the EPL crown and yet if you here the likes of David Pratt and his experts we are so far away we'll never get there (what a load of tossers) we were not far off this season so next if Rafa gets the backing he deserves I fully expect to win the draws (so to speak) and stay the course.......

I thinkl that rafa has learned that he cant rotate so much and now hopefully the squad will be strenghthed by new signings, answering your question ra ra. Barry can play in 3 positions so thats quality coming in either of those places

Is anybody listening to Stevie G...

Can somebody tell me where the mega bucks are going to be coming from if Hicks and Gillett don't put money down this month?

Just a thought...

For some reason I got sidetracked with the earlier comment , Steven is right when he says more or less the pieces are in place but now it's time to back Rafa with what was promised last year and not let him wait until most players on his wish list are bought and this time around Parry must work faster to secure the people Rafa wants and not let them drift away into waiting arms of other clubs. I heard this morning on ssn that Inter were willing to pay 25mill for Stevie G and it was turned down, they did mention the paper it came from but I wont as I believe they are stirring the manure pile......

Don't we hear this at the end of every season?

Just wish that for once we would do our talking on the pitch.
