RAFA CONFIRMS MILLER DEPARTURE
Jimmy Rice 08 May 2008
Rafa Benitez has confirmed first-team coach Alex Miller will leave Anfield to become manager of J League side JEF United Chiba.
The Scot leaves for Japan after nearly a decade at Liverpool both as chief scout and, since 2004, as part of the coaching staff.

Benitez confirmed Miller would be replaced over the summer.

He told Liverpoolfc.tv: "It is very positive news for Alex. This is a very good opportunity for him to coach in Japan.

"It means we will be promoting some of the existing coaching staff and also over the summer we will be looking to bring in a replacement.

"We have some names and options but need more discussion first.

"I want to wish Alex all the best in his new job."

Chiba are bottom of the J League standings after collecting two points from 11 games so far this season - a run which led to Croatian coach Josip Kuze being sacked on Wednesday.

Miller enjoyed a 15-year playing career with Rangers before earning his European coaching license.

His managerial CV includes South China AA, St Mirren and Hibernian, who he led to the Scottish League Cup.

Best of luck Alex! Good to know he wasn't 'sacked'.

Why would he want to leave Liverpool and go to Japan for god's sake Undecided

I wish him all the best though.

Something else to add to his CV I suppose.

It all seems very strange to me.

Is  managing  an obscure team in Japan a better job than being the number 2 at LFC?

I hope it s not another Paco saga with Rafa falling out with his assistant.

I wait with interest to see who will take his place.

Wasn't he just a coach? Not an assistant manager?

Maybe he just wants a new challenge right now and would like to manage for a while.

We should play his team in a pre season friendly.

Good Luck to you Alex, thanks for all the things you have done.

But why would you want to manage in Japan when you can stay as a coach at Liverpool?!

Sad to see Alex leave.

In terms of replacements I hope Rafa picks an ex-Liverpool player, I know he had offered Gary Mac a place a few years back.

Has to be someone who knows a lot about Liverpool and has a good understanding of tactics and training.

« Reply #13 on: May 08, 2008, 03:43:08 PM »

Wasn't expecting this.

I would like to think it's just as simple as it sounds. He's seen an opportunity to further his career and he's gone for it. I'm sure he'll still have Rafa's phone number and if he see's a very good talent over there, he might give him a call.  Wink

Good luck to him.

It will be interesting to see if we bring someone in or just promote someone.

Aw damn. You could see Alex was close to Rafa and that he had significant input to the side, so let's hope the man who fills his role is up to it. I agree, Sammy Lee would be up there as my candidate. Rafa will probably just promote someone like that other guy that 'replaced' Pako.  Can't remember the guys name, but he was a fitness coach or something...

Good luck to Alex anyway, hope he succeeds out there.

Alex Miller wants to see what he can do as first team coach somewhere he isn't that well known and nothing to do with Rafa or LFC he is at the age that if he don't try coaching a first team in pastures new it may pass him by. That's probably why he picked Japan he has coached in Scotland & England but never abroad and he is far enough away from the tabloids (at least British one's)...Good luck to you Alex hope it works out for you & Family in Japan.....

Just said on SSN that Sammy Lee appears to be the bookies favourite so far. Suppose it makes sense seing as he's fluent in Spanish.  Cheesy

Good luck to him, hope he does well.

Apparently Sammy Lee is set to return to the club which would be great, hopefully Thommo will be coming back to.

Got to be Sammy Lee - he should had never left the club... Rafa actually wanted him to stay when he arrived but Sammy felt it was time to move to Bolton under Big Sam.

I read that Sammy behaved like a total gent with Rafa (when Rafa & Pako joined) ...showing Rafa and his new team around Melwood before leaving for Bolton.

SAMMY COME BACK HOME.

I say replace Alex with a class coach like what Chelsea did by signing Ten Cate. Rafa to stick to solely team tactics and managing whereas the replacement to get down to skill and technique coaching. I think we have brilliant players with plenty of potential but somewhat raw. Maybe we can get an ex-international to teach them a thing or two no?

I don't have any names in mind though heh

Ye, I'm all for an ex player.  That makes the most sense, he would demand respect then and know his way around the place.  Hope it is Sammy but I very much doubt it, he's been a number 1 else where @ the top level.  I know he didn't achieve that much but surely it would be a step back for him in career terms.  Jan Molby or Rushie would get my vote...

Going from manager at Bolton to first team coach at Liverpool is not really a step back in career terms though is it. Let's be honest.  Wink
