I don't think I've ever seen a thread ask this its usually best player or best side but what about best decade? I have only witnessed from the80s onwards but thanks to dvd and tv have seen our glorious past. I'm sure there a few oul lads on here who have lived through a good few decades  Grin and can give a good insight into which decade is our best. For me its between the 60s 70s and 80s

THE 60S

When the dynasty that is the club we know now was born. Bill Shankly arrived to transform a club going nowhere to Englands best side. We became regular travellers into Europe. The kops fame grew and our anthem took off. It was boomtime in the city which probably helped even more to the feelgood factor of being a Liverpool fan. The clubs first FA cup was won also in this decade

Honours: Championship=2, FA cup=1

THE 70S

European success was tasted and we became the most crowned league champions of England. Shankly passed the baton to the clubs most successful manager Bob Paisley and the first real superstar footballers arrived in Keegan and Dalglish

Honours: Championship=4, FA cup=1, European cup=2, Uefa cup=2

THE 80S

Liverpool itself was going through a tough spell but it was the clubs most successful time. We became the best side in Europe. We won a treble under Joe Fagan and a double under Kenny, winning 2 all merseyside fa cup finals also. However the 80s will be mostly remembered for 2 tragedies,Heysel and Hillsborough. Both of which had huge, changing impact on the club

Honours: Championship=6, FA cup=2, European cup=2, League cup=4

For me the best decade is the 60s. For the reason that the club pulled itself out of the doldrums to become a major force in Europe. If the manager his staff and players had not have done what they done back then our modern day history could, would, be a lot different . Any views on this?

Amazing record isnt it. If I was basing it purely on success It would have walked it but I was looking at the overall effect on the club and our history

There's arguments for all three decades.

The 60's because it was the time when Shankly turned up, turned our entire club around and made us what the entire world know as Liverpool Football Club. We weren't anything but just another football club before this.

The 70's, because Paisley was to take the mantle from Shankly and carry on the Liverpool tradition and then do something Shankly narrowly missed out on. Conquered Europe.

The 80's because the league title was rarely away from Anfield and our European exploits cemented us as one of the European super clubs, world reknown for our amazing football.

You never know though. With what Benitez is setting up here, the 10's could be our greatest decade ever! 2010 onwards could be a Liverpool dominated time! Wink Scrap that, we'll start them at 2009, just to accomodate this seasons eh? Cheesy

I think you would have to say the 80's.

Arguably some of our greatest sides.  Periods of enormous dominance in the league.

Tons of trophies as well.

I would have to agree with the majority on here and say the 80's, but we ain't done bad since the turn on the century, 2 F.A.Cups, 2 League cups, 1 Champions League and 1 EUFA Cup ! thats not including 2 super cups and 2 charity shields.
It's that lack of Premierleague titles that gauls me so much, you don't need to win it now in order to qualify for the champions league (just ask scumchester 1999)!

80's because its the only decade I've seen considerable footage of, sure not as much as most on here who were alive at the time but it was our best 10 years mixed with our worst 30 after. It's what Liverpool is built on not only as a football club today but as a big family who rally in support when one is kicked to the curb.

Not to mention we had some phenomenal players. Barnes, Rush, Dalglish, Whelan, Hansen, Grobelaar etc in the side it was near perfection on a pitch.

Despite not seeing it first hand, I'm going to say the 80s.

I think the magic of this decade is we had three different teams in the space of just 10 years. Paisley's side that won the European Cup in 81 had been built from the 70s, then Fagan's 84 side was his own side with some new players like Steve Nicol and Brucie. Then Dalglish's 88 side was free flowing football at its best.

Thought I'd add this:

The Great Debate returns to LFC TV on Monday night at 9pm and this time we want to know what was the greatest decade on the pitch for the Reds - the Seventies or the Eighties?

The Sixties might have seen Bill Shankly rebuild the club and lead the Reds to FA Cup glory while the Noughties have already seen Gerard Houllier and Rafael Benitez land 10 trophies between them but neither decade can touch the Seventies and Eighties for sheer footballing domination. Now we want you, the supporters, to decide whether it's the Seventies or the Eighties that can lay claim to being the best decade on the pitch for Liverpool Football Club?

Were Liverpool achievements during the 1970s - lifting a first European trophy in 1976, being crowned Kings of Europe a year later and winning four titles - enough to secure the title of Liverpool's greatest footballing decade?

Or was what followed even better? Does glory in Rome against Roma and near-total domination on the domestic front, including a historic double in 1986, mean we can't look past the 1980s when judging the Reds decade on the pitch?

By 11pm on Monday, we'll provide the answer.

The minute The Great Debate kicks off on LFC TV, a poll will go live on the official website, liverpoolfc.tv, asking supporters the very same question we'll be asking our two studio guests and viewers at home: What was Liverpool's greatest decade on the pitch?

Visitors to the website will be able to cast their vote up until 10.50pm, while all fans will be welcome to call up the show and debate the subject with our two special guests, Brian Reade (Daily Mirror columnist, author and kop Season Ticket holder) and Nicky Allt (author, playwright and lifelong Liverpool fan), two men who were both there when Liverpool were sweeping all before them aside.

While fans vote on the website, the show on LFC TV will present a case for each decade with classic match action and contributions from special guests. We'll be updating viewers on how the voting is going throughout the show and we'll also be sharing some of the views posted by supporters on not only the official website's message boards but also the forums of various independent LFC websites. If you've got something to say, we want to hear from you – either live on the night or posted up on a message board.
We also want you to vote on the night – it's LFC TV's Great Debate but only you can decide the outcome.

The show starts at 9pm on Monday with the vote opening simultaneously on liverpoolfc.tv

Has to be the 80's, I was lucky enough to live through it all, to be on the kop each week, to be following the Reds in Europe and to see some of the best players to ever pull on a red shirt.

Do I feel privileged?

I certainly do  Wink

Harsh question, far too difficult! Wink It's a shame I wasn't there to see the Reds in the Seventies as we were just getting into top gear and our domination of country and Europe was getting into full flight!

Of the decades I've seen, it's obviously the Eighties that come out on top, but it's  maybe too easy to dismiss the earlier years that many of us were not around to experience.
