      Monty Python Appreciation Thread
      Dec 19, 2008 12:42:03 am
I was watching the Life of Brian the other day and despite me having seen it about a 100 times before it still makes me laugh. The Holy Grail has me in stitches at times, especially at the start where the two knights decide on a draw during a duel despite the Black Knight having no arms or legs left by the end. The Meaning of Life again is very funny and not given the praise it deserves.

The Flying Circus has some great sketches, the most famous probably being the dead parrots or the Spanish inquisition.

I also love the work they've done when they've been on their own, such as Fawlty Towers which in my opinion is one of the best comedies ever. Basil is just a perfect character and Cybil compliments him so well. Eric Idle is great in the film "Nuns on the Run" with Robbie Coltraine.

Overall I just think the Monty Python was a fantastic set of comics, who can (and will) have you laughing for a very long time. Their shows don't even look dated.

The tv stuff was also brilliant! Bit more deep and twisted, but I like that.

They were the best! The series was full of hilarious moments, I used to love the "It's" man, always killing himself just to say his one word at the start! :D

There's too many to mention, the "albatros" sketch was so funny too, the Spanish Inquisition... Those "gumby" men with the hankies knotted on their heads had me in stitches as a kid too!

The films are easily as good too. Life Of Brian and Holy Grail, Jabberwocky as well, and the ones when they were split up. A Fish Called Wanda is one of my favourite films!

I actually went to see Monty Python live many years ago at the Royal Court with some teachers and pupils I was about 15 and I must tell you it was one of the Best shows I have ever seen.
It was a great mix of sketches and film total stupidity right from the start and the best about it was the school paid as part of an english and drama study.

Yeah, I recently bought them on DVD and they were good, but it is dated and doesn't seem to be as funny as I remembered.

But everybody I know can at least shout out a catchphrase and will normally get a smile from other people.

"Life of Brian" is great.  Did you know George Harrison helped sponsor it and I think he has a cameo appearance too.  It's a bit weird since it was banned for being blasphemous and should have offended Harrison's Christian views.

Oh come on ,can't believe some are picking holes in comedy genius! Maybe some of it seems a bit dated as it was from the 70's and early 80's. And it 's where the inspiration for many of today's comics comes from. Superb. ;D
