Cracking debut, I was mightly impressed with him, looked very asured and did not look out of place or in awe at the occasion, he played in some lovely crosses and if he had not made that surging run into the box that caused so much confusion Yossi would never have got his goal, the only negative I can find in his debut was the niggling little injury he picked up. He got my vote for man of the match in the game thread and I stand by that.

Kelly certainly had a much better start than his youth teammate Spearing. Played it safe at first but as the game went on he started to motor down the right touch line and support the attack and made some nice crosses.

He had a nervy start, I thought.

After that, he was really promising. He was delivering inch perfect crosses into the box with right and left foot, and rarely let his man beat him. A very solid debut.

Gutted the lad went of injured. Super game. He gives us the option of pushing Johnson up right midfield in a 4 4 2 formation. Long term I think he will be a top centre half.

P.S. Has he ended Ste Darby's hopes at the club?

I hope not, IMO there is room for both of them to be competing. Would be great to see them both make it.

IMHO Darby's not going to make it here. 4th choice at 20 years old?

He just turn 21 at the start of the month but I agree with you, when younger players like Kelly (who is 19) are leap frogging you in terms of the depth chart then you have to think his future at the club is very bleak. Personally believe he is better off trying to go out on loan and maybe catch the eye of some lower league manager to sign him for next year.

Isn't kelly primarily a centre back? Remind anyone of a young carra's progression into the first team. Thought kelly was fantastic though for a youngster...would rather see a home grown player come through slowly than get another squad foreigner who is picking up a nice wage as a bench/back up...time to trust in the future. Think how darby must feel having kelly usurp him...doesn't bode well for stephen...though good to have youth competition

Any decent manager in the Championship would snap him up on the cheap now.

And at 19, he has extra time to develop. One thing lacking with Darby is his attack but Kelly, for both the Reds and England, looks to have the ability to defend and attack.

Has there been any news on his injury? Haven't seen or heard anything since he went off. Hope it's not too serious.

      Neither have I Ian.

I thought he collided into the post trying to clear the ball so hopefully its only some bruising.

Think Right Back has become his first choice position now. From what i heard on LFCTV earlier Rafa see's him as a right back.

Which is good IMO because could benefit Ayala as it would allow both of them more chances.

Really hope the lad gets in the squad for Sunday. We have to encourage good young players like Kelly.
As I said after the Lyon game he can be very proud of his performance on his debut so now lets see more of him.

Can anyone out there give me an update on the young defender?   I can't seem to find out if he's still on the injury list.

I have set up a Facebook group, 'Thee One and Only Martin Kelly', simply search and feel free to join, it's all open to public comments and any additions anyone would like to make are more than welcome.

He had a setback during his recovery from the knock he got on the post against Lyon, should be back within 2 or so weeks me reckons.
