Confederations Cup 2009
«
on:
June 01, 2009, 09:59:26 AM »
Some people behind me at Anfield the other week didn't know what this was so just to remind you it's basically like the World Club Cup but for the national teams.
It is contested by the winners of each of the six FIFA confederation championships (CAF, CONMEBOL, UEFA, AFC, OFC, CONCACAF). Two more teams are added - the World Cup winners (Italy) and the host country (South Africa)
So, Spain are Europe's representatives after winning Euro 2008.
Teams
Italy
Brazil
Spain
USA
Iraq
Egypt
South Africa
New Zealand
14th June 2009 to 28th June 2009
Spain matches
14th June New Zealand v Spain
17th June Spain v Iraq
20th June Spain v South Africa
Semi's 24th/25th June
Final / 3rd qualifying place 28th June

It's a bit pointless, don't you think?
5 games... just hope Nando & Co don't get shoved out there every game for 90 minutes, slogging their guts out. I want our Spanish trio coming back fresh!

Let's hope they get knocked out by the Kiwi's and the Iraqi's then.
Not too sure which TV station is covering this. Is it Eurosport?

Aye, and don't forget it could potentially be more than a trio after the transfer activity!

Glad ITV didn't get the rights. They're decent for a Champions League fixture with us now and again, but I don't particularly like the games been shown on there like FA Cup and such.
Makes me feel a bit west.

For a start we've actually got 5 Spaniards and I'm not hearing a lot of concern about Dossena and Lucas in this thread.

Think RTE are showing this. Thats just what I want a summer listening to Eamon Dunphy and Liam Brady abusing each other! :

Being part Spanish (which means - a Liverpool fan) I hope Spain win...
but I want Nando and the lads back injury free, I dont know what kind of training they make them do but it obviously affects their bodies in a bad way

A pissy and pointless tournament in my eyes.
FFS imagine some sheep shagger gets ahead of himself and hurts one of our lads, it would be devastating. Pissed off about it, the Euro clearly disrupted Nando's preperation last season and he never got his rhythm I pray this tournament does not have the same effet on any of our boys.

I agree, it does seem quite pointless.
Not to mention in reality Spain, Italy and Brazil are the only possible winners.

Should be decent games though. Dumphy is a legend
He will insult Ronaldo

Andy Townsend and his magic screen. God that man is a c**t.
Glad the BBC have it now, as well. Does that mean there will be no ad breaks during half time? BBC only advertise their shows, so they won't have much of a break? None of this "Spain versus New Zealand, and it's live" *goes off to advert break* nonsense.

Typical!
The only time we lose in the CL is when Dunphy tips us to win! But I do love his rants at Ronaldo!
Favourite Dunphy moment has to be after we beat Arsenal in the CL at Anfield last season, and Liam Brady went mental at Dunphy for having a go at Arsene Wenger!
Or else the "I've managed to stay alive for 63 and a half years!"
Sorry about going off topic. Wonder if Alonso will get a few games now after the season he's just had?

Having just checked, Cape Town are GMT+1.

I can see Torres getting a few there in that competition.
To be honest I cant see anyone other than Spain winning in S.Africa 2010, they well turn out to be the first European team to win the World Cup outside Europe!

The Confederations Cup is a fairly pointless tournament in my eyes, I see it as more of an unnecessary injury risk. Having said that though, I can see why it might be a big deal for the lesser footballing nations. I suppose all we can do is hope that no big players pick up any injuries
