Watched a couple of films recently.

      The Counsellor and The Master.

The former is a pile of sh*te but I thought The Master was excellent and the performance from Jaoquin Phoenix was as good as I've seen recently.

Watched Captain Philips last night while a tad stoned and i have to say that on second viewing it really isn't that great.
The dialogue which doesn't involve Hanks or the main pirate is mostly clunky and too extrapolating.
Alot of the camera work and lighting, especially when the scenes are in the US battle ships / air craft carriers / support boats is terrible and dated. It's as if they basically tried to emulate Hunt for Red October or Crimson Tide....which good films are very much of the 90's in style and dramatic escalation.
Also it's far far too jingoistic. Too much american propaganda.
Shame on reflection as Paul Greengrass is a fantastic director.
I am amazed it was in the Best Picture nominations list 2 years back.

Wow, I couldn't disagree more. I though it was an incredible tense piece of filmmaking. Paul Greengrass's frenetic camera style perfectly captured the panic of being caught up in a hijack situation. Tom Hanks was incredible one of his best performances in a career full of amazing roles. He was really understated and it totally forgot he was acting. And that final scene "that's not my blood!" That was heart wrenching. Fantastic movie.

      Agree.

I thought Captain Phillips was a great film.

i just saw the ''GONE GIRL''

In the end, 'Gone Girl' echoes what experience has taught,
in that with marriage you think you are getting what you desire
when in reality you are getting what you deserve...

I liked it, actually would say it's one of Willis' best films that I've seen to be honest.

Unbreakable is my favourite Shyamalan film.

Agree on 12 Monkeys. Very good film.

Trying to find a good stream for Unbreakable. That's what I wanted to watch, but settled for the Sixth Sense.

Tis indeed. Not from the states myself, but even that makes me tear up when you see all the photos/videos of the troops at the end.

BBC 3 next Thursday night is a date to look out for.

      Drive

Zane Lowe has rescored, if that's the right term, one of my favourite films of recent years and I'm really looking forward to watching that.

It could go either way as I love the soundtrack and it is an integral part of the film and I'm not sure how I'll react when I watch it but it's an interesting thing to do.

When it came out I was afraid it was going to be too much of a fluff piece with more sex than cars (nothing wrong with that mind you sometimes) but I was pleasantly surprised as to how the racing and the relationships between the characters really was the focal point. It pulled me in and I definitely got a bit of a history lesson on Formula 1.

James Hunt vs Niki Lauder. I enjoyed that movie.
But Racer, what are your thoughts on the causes of Senna's death at San Marino? I was watching one of the documentaries which attributed to a broken steering shaft.

I read somewhere that it was something that still hung over Newey.
They had modified the steering column prior to the accident.

Not something that could ever be definitely proved.
Did it break before or after the impact?

The other theory is low tyre pressures because the pace car was too slow and the tyre temps dropped.

3rd theory is debris from the crash at the start.

I thought Lawrence was very good in American Hustle as well. Even better in Winters Bone though.

Watched The Conjuring last night and enjoyed it. One of the better recent horror films.
