How fast's your broadband?

Well... Apparently you should be getting much more than that.  I have really looked in to this... 

Apparently its all down to a) distance from your line (like you say) and something called signal noise ratio (SNR) and attenuation which you can access on your broadband router pages.  All pretty much to do with the amount of noise on your line.  If its noisy get BT to do something about it.  I live 1.5km from my exchange according to the websites and it says I can get around 16-20 Meg on the new ADSL2 (which is what Sky and Be are using).

The website was something like dslzone.co.uk or something like that.

Checked it mate and i am 2.14km from my exchange, some of it is probably laziness on my part as although i have my PC in the front bedroom my master phone socket is in a downstairs rear living room and i should really be using a filtered faceplate instead of microfilters on all my sockets and a good reel of RJ11 cable instead of the spaghetti junction that makes its way up my stairs. My problem is iam happy with my download speeds and 6mb is quick enough for me for Bit torrent and streaming the match on Saturday, but that may all change as i have just got a job in the firms Tech support section and will no doubt after a chat with the resident Bill Gates feel the need for speed.

Cheers JD i will give that a go tonight when i get home, the only other suggestion i got was to cart my PC downstairs and plug it directly into the master socket as this would cut out any noise but i dont fancy getting a hernia for a few more megs of speed!

£25 a month i think. weve had it for years and we got a letter saying it was getting upgraded because were good customers, this was when it was still telewest.

Don't get BT. A prime example of them throttling their connections. Robbing bas**rds.

That does it for me! Quick enough to watch live streams, so I'm happy enough.

Though my PC needs more RAM, a lot more RAM!

Er Virgin Media aka ex Telewest. It's the package with phone, tv and broadband in one. No idea how much it costs, but I think it's called the "XL" package.

Mine's BT. 

8 Meg.  Quite fast.

The point I was making about BT is that they throttle the connection until midnight

Here's mine now - supposed to be 8 meg too (4 times quicker than before midnight)
