As a biker I have always loather Volvo drivers.

As a car driver I always hated caravans and lorries that overtake by driving 0.5 mph faster when there's only 2 lanes.

As a BMW driver I have decided that Audis are now the enemy - driven like a moron with those stupid lights on right up your arse.

      ;D

      Petrol heads, never happy! ;)

I hate buses and bus drivers (no offence to any on here). In the first 6months of driving, a bus crashed in to the back hand corner of my car when I was driving. They then claimed I was at fault. At the time, I didn't need this bother in my life so I coughed up the dosh, instead of going through my insurers, for my tiny Toyota Yaris' "paint damage" to a double decker bus.

Anyway, as I was away from home for a bit, my Dad agreed to put the car through its Mot for me. The crash happened over 2 years ago. The car failed its Mot thanks to something being damaged in the right hand corner of the car. Of course, I had to pay to get it repaired and then put it through its Mot again, which it successfully passed. Wonder what caused that damage...

When I'm cycling and indicate right, that does not mean you accelerate past me and the junction, whacking my hand in the process and nearly run your car into a bus you stupid pr**k.

Just thought I'd get that off my chest.

Over the last few years I've put all my money into my next year of college and working in america last summer. Finally done with college, and have too many commitments this year to go back to america at the moment so getting myself a car. Funds are low and I'll be getting a credit union loan to help me with this.

The car is probably going to be the cheapest part to be honest. I'm still on a provisional licence as a new rule came in that says I have to do 12 driving lessons with an approved driving instructor and record them in a log book before I can do my test! SO insurance is going to be through the roof. My mate is on a provisional too and his policy is 3,000 euro a year with aviva for a 1.6 Civic!

So I am trying to balance out all my costs and get a car that has a small enough engine to keep the tax and insurance down.

So I've narrowed it down to a Mitsubishi Colt or a Toyota Starlet Glanza V. Anyone have any experience with either?

It's not exactly the Ferrari or Lamborghini debate but it's a first car so I'm not too worried. :P

Also does anyone have any other recommendations for a car. My sister started off with a Fiat Punto that was just a mechanical disaster! I live in the country so the roads aren't great at all.

In terms of cost and reliability, there's probably not much between the two. I've never driven a Starlet but I have driven a Colt and they're decent little cars. Sorry I can't offer much of a comparison but I'd probably choose the Colt.

I don't have any recommendations for a first car mate, but if you're going to keep the insurance down, make sure you pick a very small engine, and when I was young getting my first car , I put a friend as anamed driver, who had a lot of driving experience to reduce the insurance cost. Can you put a family member with a lot of experience, that can sometimes reduce it by quite a bit.

It'll be expensive anyway mate, over here a 1.2 Corsa still costs £1,450 a year to insure. They rip young people off, it's a disgrace.

Cheers lads appreciate it. To be honest Rep reliability would be more of an issue for me than the cost. I don't mind spending an extra few hundred if it means I have limited visits to a garage. No point in me saving a few hundred only to spend it over a year getting things fixed.

From what mates and other people re saying they are two good little cars and there isn't too much of a difference. Most Glanza's are 1.3 turbos so I'd be getting a non turbo otherwise I won't be getting any insurance.

It's the same here lfc_ynwa. They all think if you're a young lad driving all you're interested in is speeding and pulling handbrakes. So I know I'm going to get robbed this year on insurance, so I'm going to try and get my loan to cover as much of the cost as possible and hopefully next year I'll be on a full licence and it should come down a good bit.

I'll try the named driver thing. I'll need all the help I can get. :P

Just seen this posted on Twitter (by Gary Lineker, randomly). Not sure if it's very useful outside of the UK or not but might be of help if you spot a car for sale. It simply tells you within seconds whether it's going to be cheap to insure:

Think it's just UK mate. Just tells me I picked a good car for my age and stuff. Then when i go for a quote it asks for a UK address.

Think I have a car sorted, getting a Mitsubishi Colt off a mate for cheap and 4 tyres. The NCT (MOT) is up this month but he says it should only need tracking and headlights focused to pass. He is at the house nearly every week and as he said himself he wouldn't sell me the car if he thought there was something wrong with it because he's going to see me nearly every week anyway.

Like I said the insurance is a bi*ch though. The cheapest I can get is €2,735 a year, at €275 a month with a €410 deposit. I tried ringing one company to get myself down as a named driver with my mother insured on the car..... it came to €4,700!!!!  :o

Try Quinn Insurance, my lad insured with them, they specialise in insurance for young drivers, it is crippling though especially for the first year, my lad had a vauxhall corsa 1.2 as his first car, he's now got a 1.6 focus diesel, stay sensible in your first year and it will come down no end, good luck hun.

Cheers Cas. :) Quinn have been taken over by Liberty Insurance over here and they're quoting €3,400.

Been shopping around all day and have gotten a quote for €1,700. Which is a €3,000 difference from the quote I got as a named driver! I think this could be as good as it's going to get for me right now?

Totally unfair isn't it how they penalise everyone for the sake of a few idiots

I think that's pretty good 1,700, about what you'll have to pay  :-\

I read that you can get cheaper insurance as a young driver if you agree to have one of those cameras installed in your car. It constantly records onto a HDD and if you have a bump, it saves the last minute or so of your driving. I'll try to dig out the story as I'm not sure who's doing it, if it's UK only or how much you save  :f_doh:

EDIT: The orignal story, not a huge amount of info:

      http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/18191681

The kits and more info about costs. Seems it should pay for itself in the first year and then keep your insurance down from then on so long term, it could be a good idea:

To be honest I am delighted with 1700! It's half of what most of the quotes were for me.

The operator that got me the quote said that alot of it had to do with my occupation as opposed to being a young male first time driver. I had been putting myself down as a horse riding instructor but she said that alot of companies instantly look at that as being a jockey. And they associate jockies with high injury risk, a thrill for speed and alot of travelling. So She changed it to trainer and the employers industry to horses which is just another way of saying horse riding instructor and got that quote for me!

Cheers Rep, just looking into it and I think your insurance company has to be signed up for it and as far as i can see it's just in the UK at the moment.

Got a £600 Volvo but I try to treat it like a £6000 car. The plastic trims are faded but otherwise the body work is spotless...

      ....or it was!
Driving home from work this morning along a dual carriageway and something metal got flicked up off the road, smashed my radiator grill and damaged the paintwork above it.
Doesn't matter how careful you are, sh*t like this will happen anyway!
