Liverpool hot-shot Fernando Torres: Signings more important than qualifying for Champions League
El Nino says Reds need five top additions...
By Paul Madden
13 Mar 2010 10:29:00

Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has declared making four or five top-class signings during the summer is more important for the Reds than qualifying for the UEFA Champions League.

While El Nino still believes Liverpool will secure the fourth and final Champions League place, he's identified the transfer market as key to the future success of the much decorated Merseyside club.

"It's too soon to talk, I sincerely believe we will finish fourth but for me qualifying for the Champions League isn't so important," he told Spanish publication AS.

"What's really important is that the club makes a big effort in bringing in important players that exceed the quality of what we have.

"We need four or five top players to compete, better than what we have here to make us all grit our teeth and try to keep our position.

"Without reinforcements for a team that finishes fourth, we will again be fighting for fourth next year.

"I want to fight for the Premier League, fight for the Champions League or UEFA [Europa League] but for this we need signings."

The former Atletico Madrid captain also stated his desire to remain at Anfield and stressed the importance of the arrival of new managing director Christian Purslow as a major step forward in the club's development.

"I still have this year and three more. I've left my home and it is clear that I owe Liverpool a lot and I'm very happy here," he added.

"People treated me as if I were from here. Hopefully my future will be here, I think the club deserves to win again [the Premier League title], but they themselves know that right now that's far away.

"Fans are worried that the players go, that's a problem when you start to be afraid that your players go because then you know that the club is not going forward, but I believe this is not going to be the case at the club.

"Since Christian Purslow arrived Liverpool have had an important boost, we signed a sponsorship deal to match that of Real Madrid, then things will go forward."

I understand what he's talking about but if we don't qualify for the Champions Legue we'll have even less money and no top quality players will want to come here.

I don't think missing out on the Champions League will have as big an impact as some might think on signing quality players as we carry a lot of clout in Europe with players, however I will be concerned if like Nando says we do not get the players and the kind of investment the playing side needs as if we begin to stagnate and drop out of the Champions League for a pro longed period of time, then with the likes of Money bags Man City & Chelsea then United and Arsenal, were going to find it very hard to claw our way back.

Lucas Leiva for PM.

« Reply #6 on: March 13, 2010, 12:14:37 PM »

If we miss out on Champions League football, Fernando is right in saying we can still make big money signings. We won't sign your very top bracket of world class stars but they usually carry a massive wage bill and want to be centre of attention.

With one big signing we will be able to attract other players. It's a domino effect we can use to our advantage. We are Liverpool!

Fernando speaks like a fan. He knows what we need and knows what needs to be done. He is yearning for another striker, another winger and some more class to fight it out in the squad.

I love the man. He always has the club in his heart and won't let us down.

The guy could play for any club in the world, yet through all the s**te going on at the moment,  he still believes that he owe's the fan's. The man is a pure and simple legend!
I still very much doubt that whether those two thick b***ard's running the club, realise that if we are starved like during the last few transfer windows, and we have to endure another season like this then eventually  his patience will wear out and he will go elsewhere. Just mid table mediocrity to look forward too after that

He's said this quite a few times and it's fallen on deaf ears for the owners. I fear this one will just be the same. Top marks to Nando for coming out and saying this though. You can tell he wants to really make a bold statement about what he wants but doesn't want to worry the fans as a result.

Spot on as usual with Fernando what is the point finishing 4th if we don't sign anyone. Top class signings are more important then Champions league. Players will still come even if we are not in it, if the money is right. Look at City.

The only problem is we have no money will have less money if we don't finish in the top 4 and will get not one penny off our f**k head of owners so it might be pretty hard to sign 4 or 5 top class players.

Also where we finish could have an affect on attracting players. I'm not sure if Rafa gets 20m a season or not? If it is the case then maybe with the sale a few of the dead wood, we could possible look into going for one or two players that could really change the team. The wages could also be a key factor in signing players as well.
