Reds mourn former goalkeeper
15th Mar 2010

Liverpool Football Club were today saddened to learn of the death of former goalkeeper Charlie Ashcroft at the age of 83.

Ashcroft made his debut for the Reds in 1946 and played in the title winning side of 1946-47.

He made 89 appearances for the Reds and famously saved a penalty from Tom Finney on the opening day of the 1952-53 campaign.



Everybody at Liverpool FC would like to offer their deepest condolences to Charlie's family and friends at this sad time.

I always had special interest on former L'pool keepers, and have found myself reading about the likes of him, Elisha Scott and many others before.

 I saw Charlie play many times and to my mind he was a good keeper,unfortunately he had to contest a first team place with Cyril Sidlow who was first team choice and Russel Crossley.R.I.P. Charlie and thanks for the memories.
