Liverpool FC's Alberto Aquilani doubtful for Europa League clash
Alberto Aquilani could miss Liverpool's decisive Europa League match with Lille after picking up a stomach bug.

Ahead of his side's must-win encounter with Les Douges the Italian playmaker has been sent home from the club's Melwood training ground to recover from the virus.

Aquilani, 25, completed 90 minutes and scored his first goal for Liverpool in their 4-1 triumph over Portsmouth on Monday.

The Ligue 1 outfit hold the advantage going into the return leg of the last 16 tie thanks to Eden Hazard's late goal in the opening match.

More to follow.

Possibly sums our season up? Or has Rafa been spiking his Melwood meal with out of date eggs?  Evil

Aquilani blow for Reds

Alberto Aquilani is doubtful for Thursday night's Europa League clash with Lille, manager Rafael Benitez confirmed today.

The Italian international - who netted his first goal for the Reds in a man of the match display against Portsmouth earlier in the week - missed training at Melwood on Wednesday.

"He has a virus and is struggling with his fitness," said Benitez at Melwood earlier today.

"We have to take care of him and decide tomorrow. It will be a late decision."

When I first read this just from the Title ''Aquilani Blow for Reds'' I was like having a heart attack!! For our good is just a virus for christ sake!

maybe Aquilani is thinking, well I was gonna be benched for the Lille game anyway. I'll pretend to have a bug and then I get to play against Manure Wink

Hopefully he's steered f***in clear of Nando. The last thing we need is for him to get the virus ahead of the game against the mancs on Sunday.

Or could it be Rafa playing mind games with Lille, so they are thinking no Aquilani and then Bam last minute inclusion when the squads are announced. Smiley

He always has a virus!

Lucas was always going to play against the Mancs anyway, Aquilani would have against Lille though I'm sure

Definitely avoiding paying up for his appearances in Europe. He's like a Pay as You Go phone. Cheesy

Or keeping him fresh for United?

Get well soon Alberto. Wink

I dont think he would have played against manure so it would have been good to have him for the Lille game and bring some control. Gerrard had better up his game.

I'd have had him down more for the Lille game than the United game so this is possibly the worst outcome we could have faced.

It's already a big blow with Rodriguez being missing for tomorrow.

Lucas and Mascherano back in midfield, I feel we can still do these. Have to be honest, I don’t think for a second without Aquilani and Maxi we will be as creative but we should still have enough to do Lille
