He is another one who Brendan has had in his headlights for some time.Same as Skrtel,Henderson,Pepe,Agger and several others who would still get a game .Our full backs are awful is Martin Kelly not a better defender than Johnson.
Brendan seems to be stubborn with certain players he dropped Jamie but had to reinstate him due to injuries.
Lucas should be the DM end of but that would mean Brendan's stroke of genius putting Stevie in a deep role would have to go.

There is no role for Stevie in the deep role without the fearsome twosome of last year. A big reason for our disjointed performances this season.

Just look at the game v Swansea with Lucas and the one today with Gerrard it was night and day.

But as we all know Gerrard will be the first name on the sheet.

      1) the screen on my iPad cracked the other day.

      2) the stupid magnetic strip on my credit card is worn down, doesn't work very well now.

      3) my microwave doesn't heat everything evenly when I use it.

      Maybe I should call Lucas?

See, it wasn't that hard to come up with problems that are absolutely NOT going to be solved by Lucas Leiva.

But those aren't out of place because this thread is full of people thinking Lucas is somehow going to fix something that he definitely won't.

      Once and for all:

Whatever the problem is, Lucas is NOT the solution.

I think Lucas is used as a pseudonym for "if we had a strong powerful DM".

Although to be fair to Lucas he is still better than Gerrard as a DM.

His performance against Swansea should have least earned him a place in the match day squad today.  Certainly wouldn't have been worse than any centre midfielder on the pitch today, no matter what sh*te Roger spouts.

Agreed completely. It was such a refreshing change seeing our DM actually break up attacks.

Henderson/Allen/Gerrard has been tried and failed so many times. Why play Allen there, Lallana can surely play that position quite easily? It's like watching paint dry with us at the moment, no movement, no creativity and our midfield just wouldn't dare take some chances to actually support the attack.

We had Raheem so far wide he was virtually in row one, the space between Balotelli and the wide players is there to be ran through, but while confidence is low players tend to try and be that bit too safe. When you're talking about too safe Henderson/Allen really take the biscuit there.

Lucas is a must for now. I cannot fathom not playing him DM especially in the big games, preferably all the league and CL games.

Really pleased for the guy showing exactly what we have been missing with control at the base of the midfield and incisive passing starting play, cutting out passes, breaking up play.
He may not have the legs to play at the top level for 90 mins but he showed Brendan that without the SAS the Gerrard experiment at the shotgun is redundant.

He was a must start for me at the start of the season. I still believe it's either him or Gerrard and certainly don't want to see both in the same team, regardless of Gerrard's position.

Thought Lucas was great tonight, made some mistakes(due to lack of games), but overall, did a fantastic job.

Mine too Si.  There were some standout "moments" from others but Lucas was steady away the whole time.  We needed that discipline and reading of the game tonight and although Stevie has other qualities, Lucas is our only DM.

The thing about Lucas is that our other CMs (aside from Gerrard) all seem to play better when he is in the team. He brings calmness, stability, and organization to our side. He was great against Madrid and is getting the plaudits he deserved, but I also thought he was great against Swansea in the league cup last week. I think he deserves to be our starting CDM as long as he keeps this form up.

I said in a different thread right before one of the League Cup matches that we should only judge Lucas when he's playing as a DM and not when he's tasked with playing on the side of a diamond. Another good performance in the DM role, which I think gives better balance to the entire team when he's deployed there.

      This is the dilemma Harry.

For me, and I think most others would agree, it's Lucas or Gerrard and Lucas did enough last night to keep his place but I'd be amazed if Gerrard didn't start on Saturday so it is likely that both will play and or midfield will look out of kilter again.

I said last year that Stevie was our best CM in terms of talent and ability, but that he wasn't part of our best CM pair or trio. He had a bit of a renaissance in the 2nd half of last year, but I'm starting to think that this statement might hold true again now....

You do have to feel for BR a little.... He has the unenviable task of deciding when the appropriate time is to move on from possibly our greatest ever player  :-\

He's tactically the only specialist defensive midfielder in the squad.  Considering the amount of goals we're conceding, he should be in the team to protect the dodgy centre backs.

Part of the problem stems from the fact that other CM's always look to pass to Gerrard first, and for him to spray passes.
It just slows things down, especially when Gerrard has to move around a lot to find space now that opponents are looking to crowd him out.

Has to start today. We look much more solid with Lucas in midfield. Hasnt put a wrong foot this season while Henderson and Allen have struggled big time. Sort it out Brendan.

The much maligned Lucas Leiva we know he's not a world beater or even the best DM in the country but we all know he is still the best DM at our club. He was going towards being one of the best in the EPL if it was not for the last ACL injury.
He may have lost a yard of pace and he was never the quickest but he has still that instinct of a DM being in the right position, condensing the space between defence and midfield, knowing when to commit a foul, something he has been criticised for? Well could we have done with that yesterday?
He also can play a pass out of defence into midfield to start an attack quickly as he has a good touch.

Since coming back from injury Lucas when played solely as a DM has never let us down in my opinion, I'm not talking about playing next to Stevie as the quarterback and both of them stepping over each other.
The game against Spurs when we thrashed them 5-0.
Even against the best team in the world recently he was a calm assured prescience and if you want someone with heart and a bit of grit Lucas has that personality.

Come on Brendan you never know Lucas might get you out of a hole.
