That's my bike! Or well, that's how mine looks, but alot less clean. I love it, it's indestructable, and I test that daily. I always ride my bike to everywhere here in Amsterdam.

It's a city bike mate. It's perfect for me, it's strong, isn't much on it that will break or can be stolen or ruined. Those kind of bikes are very normal here. But then again, everybody here regularly rides their bike, there's more bikes than people here.

Loved that about the Dam. Bikes everywhere. Had always thought it wouldn't work in Dublin, but I was wrong.

Oh and get this bike.

      Love it!

Been looking at bikes more the last day or so since getting onto thinking about it more. Anyone got a decent list of maybe 5 or so brands they'd recommend me looking at? More if you have them, not really worried. Just wanna know my options :D

Well thanks for all the advice but, being a man, I ignored most of it ;D.
I had a good look at my budget and this is what I went for :

      http://www.cyclistdiscount.co.uk/p943/GT-Transeo-2-2011-Model/product_info.html

I also added stems to the handle bars.

It's a proper hybrid in the sense that it should be pretty quick on the road but can also be used at the weekends if I go out somewhere with my kids, along a canal towpath for example.
I like the way you can lock out the front suspension via a remote on the handle bars, that could be useful on my route.
It's not a decision I've rushed into becasue I've been casually browsing for ages and today visited 3 different shops to ask for advice before settling on this one.
Sent my agreement off so hopefully it should be ready for collection in a couple of weeks.

Anyways! :D on the subject of bikes, found a nice one today in a store here. Will post a link later, on my phone at the bar right now.

Hello, finally a thread about bikes.

I'm after a reasonably priced, reliable, easy-to-maintain hybrid bike for general use -- no special gears, fancy foot pedals, no NASA-tested chrome alloy x-rated super hardened handles, spangly bits, dynamos etc needed -- just one with a nice solid metal frame and two wheels that aren't buckled that will get me from a-b without causing me to fall off will suffice.

Any tips, ones I should avoid etc,?

I have a Trek 7.2 FX which I've had for about 8 years. I've done nothing to it, no maintenance other than changing a few tires. Still runs great. Truth be told, I probably should have the brakes and cables adjusted but I honestly just hop on and go and it serves me well. It cost around $400 when I bought it new. Right now I'm in the market for an entry level road bike, but man it's an expensive sport and even the entry level bikes aren't cheap.

Nice one mate, does it come with a revolver instead of a drinks flask? Never know when you might need one :P

$400 actually seems pretty reasonable compared with what they seem to be going for over here (£400+ new by the looks of things) although I must admit I'm looking for something a bit cheaper than that. I don't mind paying for quality if I know what I'm getting and can see the sense in paying the extra but I don't know a great deal about bikes and for now I'm just looking to get back into the game so to speak. I would be quite happy with a solid/reliable/relatively comfortable/easy-to-handle bike to take for the odd evening and weekend ride, and progress from there. Seeing so many cyclists out and about in this good weather really does make you want to get out there and have a go yourself.

Haha yep, took me a bloody good while to find it as well!

Since it's your thread, can I get your advice on a decent hybrid bike? Google has really been my only guide on this so far but two in particular have taken my attention. One is a Ltd Edition Carrera Sunbake (?) selling at half price (£190) at Halfords, and the other recommendation I came across is a Specialised Crosstrail going for about £240 new and perhaps £150 second hand for one in reasonable nick. From what I can gather Specialised has the better reputation here, although I don't know a lot about Carrera.

Remember that's $400 US so probably around 240 pound sterling.
One thing to think about...I paid $400 and have gotten 7 years out of it so far...that's a pretty low per year price if you amoritize it (that the right word?)

That being said, do you have anything like craigslist over there in the UK? It's like a online marketplace where people sell just about anything...classified ads. You can find great deals on lightly used bikes over here and if I were going for a fitness style bike that's the route I'd try to go.

Edit....just checked and there is a craigslist, although not sure where you live....Liverpool didn't have any listings but here's an example in London....
      http://london.craigslist.co.uk/bid/4371505550.html

That  doesn't look like a bad deal to me. Course that only helps if you live in or close to London I suppose.

Good luck, I love biking, there are bike paths all over town here and I can get just about anywhere without ever having to get on the road.

I'm still not exactly an expert in afraid. I'd certainly go for Specialized over Carrera. You'll find Halfords do some good deals in terms of equipment levels but they use cheap materials where possible to keep costs down so I'd avoid Carrera which is essentially their own brand.
Specialized, Trek, GT and to an extent Boardman are good names for hybrids though you pay a premium for the name on the latter.
One feature I'd definitely look out for is the ability to "lock out" the front suspension. I have a GT Transeo 2.0 with this feature and the switch is mounted on the handlebars near to my right thumb. On the lower specs (3.0 and 4.0), you have to reach down to the top tube (crossbar). I thought it was a bit gimmicky at first but it's brilliant. You see, having front suspension is all well and good, it certainly makes the ride more comfortable but when you're pounding your way up a steep hill, the front end "bounces" slightly so energy is lost. Locking it out makes the whole bike rigid so that power transfer is more immediate and efficient. There's some b***ard hills between my home and place of work and trust me, it helps!

Perhaps my biggest piece of advice would be to stretch your finances a bit. You say you want a cheap bike just to get into it but, from new you generally get what you pay for and if you go too low, you'll want to upgrade in no time.
I paid around £650 for mine through the CycleToWork scheme and some colleagues went for cheaper bikes, one even bought a lower spec version of mine. They have ALL upgraded since. Could turn out to be a false economy.
In truth, you'll be struggling to by anything decent new for under £500 over here. Second hand could be the way to go but I appreciate it's a minefield when you don't know what you're looking at!

I'd also think carefully about how you will really use it. I went for a hybrid as I thought I'd use it on-road and off, taking in canal towpaths and the likes. In reality I ended up just using it entirely on the road. Eventually I bought myself a full-on road bike and it makes a huge difference.

Good luck, I love biking, there are bike paths all over town here and I can get just about anywhere without ever having to get on the road.

Don't get me started on so called cycle paths in the UK!
Here's 50 metres of road painted green for you, now you have to go up onto the path, now off again, now we're coming to a roundabout so you're on your own for a bit. Cycle path comes back, cars parked all over it. Here's a bus stop, not to worry, go up on the pavement and behind the bus shelter, through the broken glass then hop back off. Don't mind these potholes and grids, cyclists deserve to be in the gutter...

Our roads are too narrow to be adapted now, you really are best just sticking to the road and riding near to the middle of the lane so cars don't feel obliged to squeeze past and force you into the curb.

Cycle paths are a F***ing joke and as Rep says are continually ending leaving the cyclist in mortal danger with the killer traffic.
The authorities make convenient noises about pollution, the environment, people getting squashed by cars and the irreversible damage to the planet we inhabit, they say cycle paths are the answer to our woes and they will hire bikes out for the general good blah blah F***ing blah.
What good is hiring bikes out when the system only accommodates the killer car and no measures are enforced to allow for any alternative?
In any other scenario an organisation allowing it's customers to be exposed to mortal danger would be prosecuted and closed down, encouraging people to chance their life on the roads of any major city riding a cycle is foolhardy in the extreme. The death rates in London for instance are alarming.
Cyclists, environmentalists and people in general can all go F**k themselves while the governments are slaves to the petrol monster.
