Dead Artists You'd Like to Have Seen
      Jan 28, 2011 09:16:05 pm
Does what it says on the tin. Which singers or groups would you like to have seen, but can't because one or more of their members has passed on?

Jimi Hendrix is a must for me. I would have loved to see the master at work.

Another would be Freddie Mercury, awesome showman, must have been out of this world to hear him live.

Plenty of others to choose from, sadly. Who would you have liked to see?

      Kurt Cobain? John Lennon? Elvis?

      Kurt Cobain (Nirvana)
Layne Staley (Alice In chains) I had every chance and missed them!
      James Lynn Strait (Snot)
'Dimebag' Darrell Abbott (Pantera) Again, should have made more effort.
      Shannon Hoon (Blind Melon)
Jimi Hendrix (would love to see him play 'Hey joe')
Bon Scott (AC/DC) Brian Johnson is brilliant but I wish I'd seen Bon Scott

Bob Marley. - did see The Wailers
Nirvana. (Kurt Cobain) - had the chance but declined; 'cause "they'll be back". ...arrragh!

One i just remembered which im ashamed i didn't at first, and surprised i have not seen it up there yet - Michael Hutchence. One of THE best leading men of all time, IMO. The band was great, still is going well - but he helped them achieve that greatness with his charisma and performances on stage. One of my favorite bands growing up despite the fact i was only 9 when he died.

That was at the RDS on the 8th April '94 racer. My ticket cost £14.25 (if I remember right) no euros then. ... I got a refund. Div.

Freddie Mercury as he is a legend and the way his music seems timeless even now says alot about the spirit of the guy, I would also liked to have seen Michael Jackson and was actually considering buying a ridiculously priced ticket off ebay to see him that summer as there was a gig on the weekend of the 24th of July (my bday was on 22nd)

Elvis would also be another artist that I would love to have had the pleasure of seeing live, if only for his version of You'll Never Walk Alone!

Edit: Bob Marley too actually, he sounds like one cool brother from another mother, "I shot the sheriff"

;D To be fair racer, I got my money back when they first canceled - I have, since then, kept tickets for a few (canceled) gigs and not one of the hoors has had the Courtney courtesy to whack themselves.

Freddie, Stevie Ray, and I'm surprised no one has mentioned John Bonham or Keith Moon.

Frank Sinatra too - he was the best at his style of music and it would have been memorable to see him perform in the 80s when he was still doing a decent job at it.

Saw Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers back in '87 at a place called Planet X in Liverpool which was a really small venue. The guy turned up very late (they had to send people to go and get him out of his hotel room) and when he eventually arrived he was wasted, totally shitfaced, probably more wasted than anyone I've ever seen who was still breathing. But hey, that was Johnny. Really enjoyed the gig although, it probably sounded awful considering the state he was in but, it was all about the moment and being there. They had to turn the electricity off after a while 'cos he wouldn't get off the stage and the venue was well past it's licensing hours. But Johnny just kept on singing and strumming on his guitar in the dark with no power anyway

Would of loved to have seen the Dolls original line up myself but, seeing as 3 out of the five are now dead it aint gonna happen and I couldn't really bring myself to see just Johansen and Sylvain parading as the dolls. Seems a bit of a fraud in a way  :-\

Hence the bring back (all) from the dead bit.

I caught NYD at a small festival, Arthur Kane had died just a month beforehand and I, sure as sh*t, wasn't going to pass up on an opportunity to see proper musical legends. I guess it's where one (as an individual) draws the line.

I've seen many a band without the original line-up; The Stones, The Who and AC/DC being good examples and didn't feel cheated. ...that night in August 04 was no different.

Saw Alice in Chains at Download 2006(?) and without the presence of Layne Staley, I just didn't feel it. Didn't feel cheated at all, just figured they were pretty much done.
Saw them again last year at Nottingham Rock City though and they were incredible. Was chuffed for them that they've managed to move forward with the new lineup. I'd urge all of you to try to catch the next tour, even if you're not a fan.

I don't have a problem in not seeing the entire original lineup but some members of the bands are indispensable. Layne Staley is one of them. I would go to an Alice in Chains gig without him if they played in Rio, but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't feel not even half of the amazement I would get from watching them with Layne. I just like him too much.

Off on a slight tangent here but the loss of a lead singer definitely has a bigger impact than any other 'position' so I understand completely where you're coming from.

This is true but in the case of Alice In Chains, it can be argued that Jerry Cantrell is the larger part of the band and on many tracks, the two of them would sing in harmony. The new singer (William DuVall) looks the part and has a good voice but when you see them live, it's clear that he's happy to share the limelight with Cantrell. Of course it's never going to be the same because Layne had that presence about him and a pretty unique voice but, Diego, you definitely need to give them a chance. I was very very pleasently surprised.

I always struggle with that question, 'Who is your favourite band / artist?' but I know AIC are up there somewhere :)
