      Favourite Musical Lyrics
      Mar 15, 2011 02:39:10 pm
After seeing the success of the Number 1 Album thread and how hard it was to pick just the one, I got thinking about all the amazing albums in there and bands, and even ones not mentioned. It also struck me how certain bands/albums can really define a generation or even just a period in your life, so was just wondering what everyone's favourite lines from a song are?

I won't be mean and just limit you to just one verse, but don't go overboard ;)

      Mine would be:

"There's really nothing, nothing we can do
Love must be forgotten, life can always start up anew.
The models will have children, we'll get a divorce
We'll find some more models, everything must run it's course."

MGMT - Time To Pretend - Official Music Video

Really love the song as a whole and all the lyrics in it. The song really did define me at a particular time on my life but I picked that verse as I was going through loads of sh*t with a girl at the time and just really loved the lyrics.

The Killers - When you were young is the song, and my sig is my most favorite verse.
Also no matter what people think of Bono, U2 have many great lyrics in their songs IMO.

      Pride being one of them!

Still love the thought of the fans singing that at the players back in the airport after Strasbourg in 97.

There are loads I will probably post in here but first off one of my favourite lyrics and it's the whole song. Posted it a while ago in The Smiths thread and to me it's perfection.

Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want

      Good times for a change
      See, the luck I've had
      Can make a good man
      Turn bad

      So please please please
Let me, let me, let me
Let me get what I want
      This time

Haven't had a dream in a long time
      See, the life I've had
Can make a good man bad

So for once in my life
Let me get what I want
Lord knows, it would be the first time
Lord knows, it would be the first time

The Smiths Please, please, please, let me get what I want
One of Morrisey's greatest lyrics in my opinion and there are many to choose from.

I know I posted the whole song above but it's so short I don't think it's overboard. :D

      First one into my head, Tupac, Runnin;

"Why am I fighting to live, if I'm just living to fight
Why am I trying to see, when there ain't nothing in sight
Why am I trying to give, when no one gives me a try
Why am I dying to live, if I'm just living to die."

There's a lyric I've always loved from a band that otherwise were disappointing. Alien Ant Farm - The Movies. At slow speed we all seem focused

Could of picked one of several from Gun n Roses' Civil War, but this one will have to do.

      My hands are tied
For all I've seen has changed my mind
But still the wars go on as the years go by
With no love of God or our human rights
and all these dreams are swept aside
By bloody hands of the hypnotized
Who carry the cross of homicide
And history bears the scars of our civil wars

Hard to pick a favourite of all time. It's mood dependant. Queens of The Stone Age - Go With The Flow. Soundgarden - Rusty Cage or The Day I Tried to Live. Pearl Jam. . . I don't know where to start as Vedder is a poet but go to the grunge thread and you'll find the lyrics to indifference. Beautiful song. Elderly Woman Behind A Counter In A Small Town. . . Always love those lyrics. If it's unrequited love then look no further than Pearl Jam - Black

One of my favourite lyrics from the last year. I love the whole song but this is my favourite part.

And I cannot hold a candle for every pretty girl
      We were strangers many hours
And I missed you for so long
When we were lions, lovers in combat
Faded like your name on those jeans that I burned

      But I am older now
And we did it when we were young
      I am older now
And we did it when we were young

Masters of War. . . Another song with inspired lyrics. Oh dear there are far too many music threads for me to take in. I could spend a long time delving into these. Hallelujah - another masterpiece. Okay this is worse than the favourite album thread. I can mail my number one to the mast there, but this is lyrics. . . A singular part of a complex song structure. I have many lyrics I love, but they might not be my favourite song because the acoustics or beats that accompany it might not finish it off for me. Agh!

Bono is a stunning lyricist. Whether it's from the enlightening inspirational lyrics of One or the moving and deeply sad Mothers of the Disappeared. My favourite lyric (from U2 at least) is from the song The Unforgettable Fire from the album of the same name.

      'Carnival
The wheels fly and the colours spin
      Through alcohol
Red wine that punctures the skin'

Stunningly beautiful song. Amazing album as well.

Bono is a really good lyricist and this is a personal favourite of mine as it was our wedding song ( soppy I know!!), but it is just a great song

Oh srslfc you just killed me with this one :) I love U2 and this is my absolutely favorite song of theirs, but not the album version, this one, the one live in their concert in Milan, love the new arrangement of the song and love Edge's guitar solos. Pure perfection

Me and my missus are not into the usual 'love' songs and both of us love the lyrics of this song and is my favourite U2 song as well, so that's why it was the one for the big day!!

One of my all time favourites! I just LOVE the last line! Genius!
Anyone listened to Zooropa (one of my favourite U2 albums) and heard the last track on it called The Wanderer. Written by U2 but lead vocals by Johnny Cash. It is about a post nuclear bomb attack and is simply one of the best songs ever written! This lyric gets me

      I went out walking
      Under an atomic sky
      Where the ground won't turn
      And the rain it burns
Like the tears when I said goodbye.

Simply the best band of the last 30 years in my opinion! I don't even have to challenge that. The Smiths come closest to them.

Yes, my guard stood hard when abstract threats
      Too noble to neglect
      Deceived me into thinking
      I had something to protect
Good and bad, I define these terms
      Quite clear, no doubt, somehow
Ah, but I was so much older then
      I’m younger than that now

      Indifference lyrics

i will light the match this mornin', so i won't be alone
watch as she lies silent, for soon light will be gone
i will stand arms outstretched, pretend i'm free to roam
i will make my way, through, one more day in hell...
how much difference does it make
how much difference does it make...
i will hold the candle till it burns up my arm
i'll keep takin' punches until their will grows tired
i will stare the sun down until my eyes go blind
hey i won't change direction, and i won't change my mind
how much difference does it make
how much difference does it make..
      how much difference...
i'll swallow poison, until i grow immune
i will scream my lungs out till it fills this room
      how much difference
      how much difference
how much difference does it make
how much difference does it make...

Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town lyrics

I seem to recognize your face
Haunting, familiar yet, I can't seem to place it
Cannot find the candle of thought to light your name
Lifetimes are catching up with me

      All these changes taking place
I wish I'd seen the place
But no one's ever taken me

Hearts and thoughts they fade, fade away
Hearts and thoughts they fade, fade away

I swear, I recognize your breath
Memories like fingerprints are slowly raising
Me, you wouldn't recall for I'm not my former
It's hard when you're stuck upon the shelf

I changed by not changing at all
      Small town predicts my fate
Perhaps that's what no one wants to see
I just want to scream hello

Well, my God it's been too long
      Never dreamed You'd return
But now here You are and here I am

Hearts and thoughts they fade away

Hearts and thoughts they fade, fade away
Hearts and thoughts they fade, fade away
Hearts and thoughts they fade away
Hearts and thoughts they fade, fade away
      Fade away, fade away

      Rearviewmirror

      i took a drive today
      time to emancipate
i guess it was the beatings made me wise
but i'm not about to give thanks, or apologize
i couldn't breathe, holdin' me down
hand on my face, pushed to the ground
      enmity gauged, united by fear
forced to endure what i could not forgive...
      i seem to look away
      wounds in the mirror waved
it wasn't my surface most defiled
head at your feet, fool to your crown
fist on my plate, swallowed it down
      enmity gauged, united by fear
tried to endure what i could not forgive
      saw things
      saw things
      saw things
      saw things
      clearer
      clearer
      once you, were in my...
      rearview mirror...
i gather speed from you F***ing with me
once and for all i'm far away
i hardly believe, finally the shades...are raised...
      saw things so much clearer
      once you, once you...
      rearviewmirror...
      saw things so much clearer
      once you, once you...
      rearviewmirror...

      Black

Sheets of empty canvas, untouched sheets of clay
Were laid spread out before me, as her body once did
All five horizons revolved around her soul, as the earth to the sun
Now the air I tasted and breathed has taken a turn

Ooh, and all I taught her was everything
Ooh, I know she gave me all that she wore
And now my bitter hands shake beneath the clouds
      Of what was everything

      All the pictures had
All been washed in black, tattooed everything
I take a walk outside, I'm surrounded by some kids at play
I can feel their laughter, so why do I sear?

And twisted thoughts that spin round my head
      I'm spinning, oh, I'm spinning
How quick the sun can, drop away
And now my bitter hands cradle broken glass
      Of what was everything

      All the pictures had
All been washed in black, tattooed everything
All the love gone bad, turned my world to black
Tattooed all I see, all that I am, all I'll be, yeah

I know someday you'll have a beautiful life
I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky
But why, why, why can't it be, can't it be mine?

      "Hallelujah"

I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
      It goes like this
      The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
      The battle king composing Hallelujah
      Hallelujah
      Hallelujah
      Hallelujah
      Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Baby I have been here before
I know this room, I've walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you.
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
Love is not a victory march
      It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

      Hallelujah, Hallelujah
      Hallelujah, Hallelujah

There was a time you let me know
      What's really going on below
But now you never show it to me, do you?
And remember when I moved in with you
The holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah

      Hallelujah, Hallelujah
      Hallelujah, Hallelujah

      Maybe there’s a God above
But all I’ve ever learned from love
Was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you
It’s not a cry you can hear at night
It’s not somebody who has seen the light
      It’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah

      Hallelujah, Hallelujah
      Hallelujah, Hallelujah

You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did, well really, what's it to you?
There's a blaze of light in every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah

      Hallelujah, Hallelujah
      Hallelujah, Hallelujah

I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though it all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah

      Hallelujah, Hallelujah
      Hallelujah, Hallelujah
      Hallelujah, Hallelujah
      Hallelujah, Hallelujah
      Hallelujah, Hallelujah
      Hallelujah, Hallelujah
      Hallelujah, Hallelujah
      Hallelujah, Hallelujah
      Hallelujah

      Masters of War

      Come you masters of war
You that build the big guns
You that build the death planes
You that build all the bombs
      You that hide behind walls
      You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks.

      You that never done nothin'
      But build to destroy
      You play with my world
      Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
      When the fast bullets fly.

      Like Judas of old
      You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
      You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
      That runs down my drain.

      You fasten all the triggers
      For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
      You hide in your mansion'
      As young people's blood
      Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud.

      You've thrown the worst fear
      That can ever be hurled
      Fear to bring children
      Into the world
      For threatening my baby
      Unborn and unnamed
      You ain't worth the blood
      That runs in your veins.

      How much do I know
      To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
      You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
      Though I'm younger than you
      That even Jesus would never
      Forgive what you do.

Let me ask you one question
      Is your money that good
      Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
      I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
      All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul.

And I hope that you die
      And your death'll come soon
      I will follow your casket
      In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
      Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand over your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead.
