Great piece of business this could turn out to be. Got very high hopes for this guy. Obviously he might slip up once or twice early on, the Premiership being what it is, but he seems to have both the talent, and hugely importantly, the mentality, to succeed at a big club on the big stage.

Interesting that Comolli noted that he and staff had been following him for 2 years and the scout that LFC sent to the Copa was nothing more then for confirmation of what they thought already. Makes sense but did not realize that Comolli probably had his own private stash of scouts and they moved with him when he came over. Great stuff though identifying the talent and locking them up when young...expect to see much more of this in the future.

Start him at Stoke and let him know straight away what to expect from the Premier League football and why we've bought him;).

Our new boy in 10 facts

Liverpool have completed the signing of highly-rated Uruguay international Sebastian Coates - but what do you know about our new defender?

Liverpoolfc.tv brings you up to speed with 10 interesting facts.

      1. Coates is nicknamed 'Luganito' by Uruguay fans because he's seen as the natural successor to the captain of the national team, Diego Lugano. Indeed, Lugano has previously said himself that he expects Coates to go on to skipper the national team.

      2. Coates's signing now means Liverpool have two Copa America winners in their squad - Luis Suarez, crowned player of the tournament, and Sebastian Coates, young player of the tournament.

      3. Standing at a towering 6ft and 6 inches, Sebastian comes close to being the Reds' tallest ever player - dwarfed only by Peter Crouch.

      4. Coates shares his birthday with another giant ex-Red, Sami Hyypia. The duo were both born on October 7, a date that is also special for Simon Cowell and Alesha Dixon.

      5. The 20-year-old has actually scored against a Liverpool side before - Liverpool Fútbol Club - who Coates faced whilst playing for Nacional.

      6. In an interview with Ovacion, Coates revealed that it was talks with his fellow countryman Luis Suarez that helped persuade him to choose Liverpool. Coates said: "We chatted for quite a while, he told me it was a club with great history and tradition. He's doing well there and it's important to me because another Uruguayan will be there".

      7. The Uruguayan shouldn't have too much trouble learning English. Sebastian's father, Peter, is an Englishman himself and the player has admitted previously to taking a couple of lessons off him.

      8. Coates made his debut for Nacional against Bella Vista at the age of 17 and was afterwards voted man of the match by journalists from Spanish newspaper El Pais.

      9. Since then the defender has started every single game for Nacional, withstanding suspension and national duty.

      10. Coates is currently the only player in the current Uruguay squad who's never lost a game whilst playing for the national team.

      Welcome to LFC Sebastian.

Think he will come in handy when KK decides to play with 3 at the back i.e. SB last year.

Im slightly curious at how KK is going to give enough game time to Carra , Agger, Skittles and Coates.

Hoping the latter play all cup games. I want Agger to play as many EPL games as possible.

      Clarke: Coates is ready now

      http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/news/latest-news/clarke-coates-is-ready-now

      2nd Sep 2011 - Latest News

Steve Clarke is confident Sebastian Coates is ready to answer the call when Kenny Dalglish decides to hand him his Liverpool debut.

The 20-year-old was signed from Nacional on a long-term contract on Tuesday to bolster the Reds' defensive ranks ahead of the close of the transfer window.

Coates arrives on Merseyside fresh from being crowned the Copa America's Young Player of the Tournament last month - and Clarke believes his assured performances in the competition bode well for his adjustment into the Barclays Premier League.

The first-team coach told Liverpoolfc.tv: "He's a talented youngster and gives us different options at the back.

"We look to sign young players that can improve and we looked at his performances throughout the Copa America when he was named Young Player of the Tournament. It's certainly exciting.

"It'll be a different challenge for him because the English Premier League is a league that takes a little bit of getting used to, so hopefully we can nurse him along, get him ready and he'll be a valuable addition to the squad.

"He's ready to play. He's a full international and Uruguay are amongst the top five in the world, so they're a strong international team.

"He's ready to play if required, but we've also got many other centre-halves ready to play if required."

Coates becomes the second Uruguayan to join Liverpool, following in the footsteps of compatriot Luis Suarez.

Suarez made a seamless transition to life in England after moving from Ajax in January, and Clarke is hoping Liverpool's new No.16 can follow suit.

He added: "You never really know how a foreign player coming into the English game is going to adapt. Some take a long time to adjust, while others like Luis Suarez come in and settle straight away.

"You just keep an eye on it and hope the boy settles quickly, gets to know his teammates, gets a few chances to play and then you build on it from there."

Coates will already have some familiarity with Britain as his father hails from north of the border - and Clarke is looking forward to chatting all things Scottish with the defender.

      Clarke on our new boy

"I believe there is some Scottish heritage in him, so obviously Kenny and myself will do a bit of digging into his background," laughed Clarke. "But it's too late, he can't play for Scotland because he's already capped for Uruguay!"

Coates became Liverpool's sixth major signing of the summer ahead of Craig Bellamy's deadline day transfer, joining fellow new boys Jordan Henderson, Charlie Adam, Alexander Doni, Stewart Downing and Jose Enrique.

The Reds' new arrivals have already made an impact in the early stages of the season, but Clarke is in no doubt there is much more to come from them.

"All over the team you can see little partnerships and combinations starting to form," he said. "We're basically a young team who are still getting to know each other and still working on strengths and weaknesses.

"Hopefully over a period of time we'll improve and the team performances will improve too."
