Mighty Red the new Liverpool mascot
      Jul 08, 2012 09:46:46 pm
Over 50 young Liverpool fans got the surprise of their lives this afternoon when the club's cheeky new mascot Mighty Red made his first ever public appearance at a kids' party at Anfield.

The launch event, held at the Boot Room Sports Cafe, was attended by local children aged between four and 11, who all received a limited edition 'golden ticket' to attend the party which marked the start of a new concerted campaign to enhance the experience of the club's young fans.

European Cup winner Alan Kennedy also put in an appearance to keep the kids' parents happy while the little ones were being entertained.

Having arrived at 5pm, all the kids got to have their picture taken with the Carling Cup trophy in the museum before being led into the Boot Room Sports Cafe to take part in a fun 15-question quiz before playing party games with the winning children walking away with some fantastic LFC prizes.

With a Boot Room buffet out of the way, it was time for Mighty Red to make his grand entrance - much to the delight of the kids - dancing his way into the room to the sound of 'You'll Never Walk Alone'.

"I couldn't believe it when he walked in," claimed six-year-old Daniel from Wavertree. "My mum said there might be a special guest but we weren't expecting to see Mighty Red today."

Nine-year-old Lauren from Tuebrook was equally impressed - even if her younger sister was a little unsure at first. "I thought Mighty Red was well cool," she said. "But I think my sister was a little bit shocked when he first walked in. Then he started doing his mad dance and she loved it."

An even bigger hit than Mighty's dance, however, was when he handed out packed LFC goody bags to each and every kid at the party, much to the delight of eight-year-old Sean from West Derby. "The goody bag was brilliant!" he said. "This has been one of the best parties ever!"

The final words have to go to Mighty himself though - so how was it?

"It was great! I'm always up for a fun party, especially ones that have candy floss! As a massive Liverpool FC fan, I love meeting and hanging out with other supporters - it's always a good time. There were even a few kids here who had almost as much energy as I do!"

So what will you be doing next season?

"When I'm not in school, in detention, or playing footy with my mates, I get to go with the Liverpool FC Foundation to meet kids all over the world! I feel like the luckiest LFC supporter ever. I'll also be working on my great dance moves and footy skills for the next party!"

Good idea if it just works with the kids but i don't want to see that anywhere near Anfield on match days !!

Would agree there. This is the first I had heard of it. Don't want a mascot dancing around Anfield. Hope that's not the plan..?

Yep leave the dancing mascots to the non PL teams, Bolton etc...

Anfield Cat should have been the new mascot - disappointed.

If MIGHTY RED brings these kids a lifetime of loyalty to Liverpool Football Club  I can't see any problem.Let's face there are enough distractions in the world today so something that brings some satisfaction into their lives can't be bad.Well done L.F.C.encourage the kids to become good REDS I say.

I don't know? If all else fails at Anfield this season why not roll out Mighty Red and his "mad dance"! Then he can get chased around the field by hundreds of our fans to that funny Benny Hill music.

Charlton have a mascot on matchdays all they do is have a kick about with the kids who are mascots and entertain the kids in the crowd during the game who are of the age where they may not necessarily be interested in the actual game.

Good for merchandising really... Now the club will be selling the mascot toys, stickers and clothing.  Easy for the parents to buy their young kids presents that are Liverpool-related.

I have mentioned on a thread way back in the archives about the Blackpool mascot many years ago it was a duck and it was dyed yellow to look gold. This was in the Stanley Mathews/.Mortenson days and they used to bring it on the pitch before kickoff and let it run around the centre circle. The last time I can remember the duck would be in the 1950s.

      Thought that myself.
The thing that worries me is that sooner or later, they might go that extra step to link the mascot with the club/team in the eyes of kids. Put it this way, they'd be a lot more excited about seeing a character come into their party if they'd seen him at a match or on TV, making him a celebrity in their eyes.

Should only go to away matches and attack other team's mascots. Sort of It's a knockout except at OT where Mighty Red takes a cosh to do Fred The Red.

I and the local kids might appreciate it more then!

Agree with this, the kids will love it and before long there will be little replica birds going for a tenner a pop and soft shites like myself will buy them.

No harm as long as it stays as it is, that being away from the pitch.

When I used to go and watch Oldham when I was younger they had/have Chaddy The Owl, I remember a few times at half time going onto the pitch, he would be in goal and we would have a little shoot out :P

As long as that silk/nylon disaster is not within 10 miles of Anfield on Matchday, I'm ok with it. If it gets young kids involved in the club and the sport than its great. But, If I have to see that dancing around the KOP I will gouge my eyes out w/ a soup spoon.

If this appears at Anfield I will make my feeling very clear as I suspect everyone in the ground will.

Great idea for kids parties.  But that should be all.

And I notice that Liverpool have said it won't be appearing at games.

      But that's for now.

Within 24 months this will definitely be prancing about on the pitch before games - or shaking hands with the goalscorers, as some ditty tune plays with each goal.

If we have another Europa game with free kids entry then that will be when it makes it's first appearance on the pitch.

And when that DOES happen - like someone said before - Everton behaviour.

Sad day in the club's history. FFS having a mascot visit sick children  :f_steam: YANKS OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Sarcasm, obviously)

Mighty Red brings Alder Hey joy
Liverpool's new mascot Mighty Red brought joy to children and their families at Alder Hey on Tuesday as he toured three of the hospital's wards handing out special gifts and entertaining the patients.

Mighty showed off his dancing skills, posed for photos with kids and presented each of the children with a bag full of LFC goodies as well as his own signature cards.

Our mascot visited ward L2 before making the short walk to E2, where he was in fine form, joking and dancing as LFC club chaplain Bill Bygroves accompanied him on the guitar.

On ward E2 was 10-year-old Andy Speke, who was delighted to see Mighty bound down the corridor and make a beeline for him to say hello.

"I think he was really cool and he looked really funny," said Andy. "I liked him and I really liked his dance."

Ward C2 was last for Mighty before he headed home for the day.

"It was a fantastic day," said Bill. "Mighty really connected with the boys and girls. They loved him and lots of the parents did too. Some of the parents said it broke up a difficult and monotonous day, so all in all it was great.

      VIDEO: http://www.liverpoolfc.com/video/features/11994-mighty-red-visits-alder-hey

"He was really friendly, really funny and full of life - he really connected with the boys and girls.

"You could see by the children's faces just how joyous they were and that's a great thing. All of us, especially Mighty Red, wants to wish all the boys and girls at Alder Hey a speedy recovery."

Irene Axon, senior community fundraiser at Alder Hey, added: "Today wasn't just great for the children but Mighty also put a smile on the faces of all the families who are here sitting around their beds and all the staff as well.

"He integrated very well with everybody on the wards. Some of these children are here every day, some have been here weeks, some months, and so it's great to have such a special visitor to break up the day."

...who gives a toss? this is one thing where the club is "getting with the times" but it's actually OK. it doesn't make us a "soulless franchise" now - it doesn't harm us at all. it's a bloody guy in a suit so the kids who are mascots on match day have a hand to hold walking to and from the ground... most footy fans wont even know the mighty red exists, unless they're purposefully looking around for it, at Anfield, on match day.

i think it's far more embarassing having "dunkin' donuts" a major partner of LFC and having our logo up there next to "dunkin' donuts" logos. a liverbird mascot for the kids? that seems almost logical. some people gotta get out of the 70s!

Great idea for hospital visits or pre match in a specified area in the stadium for kids to get pics etc but this should not be seen anywhere near the pitch.

To be honest Bill they want to keeping up with what the majority of people who have paid good money to go the ground and watch the games want.

I'd bet good money that a huge majority of supporters at a game will be grimacing at it so whether anybody thinks that is being a miserable f**ker or not, it is what it is.

Me personally? If it is for just 45 seconds for a photograph with a child mascot then okay (just) but I'm glad that people are kicking up a fuss because if they didn't we would have a bird that couldn't fly flapping and clapping behind the goals in the most cringeworthy of fashions before we knew it.

Just don't want to be hearing any of this talk of it being "good for the kids who are at the game" malarkey because as far as I know, according to the TAW lads, the kids are shoved up in a corner of the upper Anfield Road and for every child ticket bought two adult tickets must be bought with it. Not sure if anybody can clarify that as true for me?

Think it's more for the mascot to be honest. Only 2% of the match day demographic is aged under 16 years according to Tony Barrett.

That's more of an issue than a mascot running onto a pitch, having one picture taken with a mascot and then running straight back down the tunnel.

Again though, no matter what we think of it, the majority of the crowd will be against it. As Neil Atkinson pointed out, if the club know that the majority of the support - who have paid £50 odd to go the game - are not happy about it then why piss them before a ball has been kicked?

If he'd hung around on the pitch for 45 seconds per game last season he'd probably have ended up getting a game at right back.

      Agree mate.

As I was discussing on Twitter yesterday with Ross it maybe won't be long until the prices are that high there will be no kids at the game to see Mighty Red.

Must admit I had confused mascot with mascot......if you know what I mean. Still think the pictures with the players would mean more but I am getting on a bit!

Sad indictment of modern football that the proportion of under 16s is so low. That said, my wife has a couple season tickets at Parkhead (family thing) but only goes once a month at most. I offered them to a colleague for any game she doesn't go to (his 2 boys are both Celtic fans) and he said thanks but no thanks it's too far to travel.....only stays 25 miles away. I think some kids only see the beautiful game now as a tv sport.

if the club know that the majority of the support - who have paid £50 odd to go the game - are not happy about it then why piss them before a ball has been kicked?

I think you've fell into the trap of believing the club give a sh*t about the match-going fans.

This is all about TV, all about branding and all about marketing - and probably more likely aimed at the US.

Oh na mate, looking at the cost of tickets and season tickets and the way in which they are distributed tells anybody anything they need to know about that.

Just a bit mad the way I've heard more moaning about a 45 second cameo by a bird than I have about these hiked up prices etc.

Must admit I had confused mascot with mascot......if you know what I mean. Still think the pictures with the players would mean more

Of course it would mate but the more iconic the face of some bird becomes the better it is globally for all sorts of things. A number of bird costumes can be in a lot more places in the world at any given time than any one Liverpool player can be if you know what I mean.

Good point about this on the Citytalks Liverpool show yesterday, if this pterodactyl lookin Liver bird is aimed at kids then why has the club got a policy of two adults per kid? The fella on the radio said that if he wants to take his lad to the match and there's no other adult going he'd have to pay for his lad and another adult and that would cost the same as a kids SEASON TICKET at Goodison.

Now, barring any Everton based jokes, that's some perspective that, ONE match at Anfield vs one SEASON at Goodison.

Some people have never been arsed singing, even in our heyday it wasn't a Chelsea 05 semi type atmosphere every game. Some people just want to go watch the game!

On the Mighty Red thing, how F***ing messed up are kids today if that is what they want to see. I bet if they were asked they'd rather see Gerrard, Ballotelli or Coutinho.
