      Jul 28, 2012 08:19:21 pm
First blood to Ryan Lochte over Michael Phelps in the Men's 400m Individual Medley.  Phelps only placed 4th.  Pereira (Brazil) and Hagino (Japan) took 2nd and third respectively.

Over to Hannah Miley swimming now in the Women's 400m Medley.

      Come on Hannah!

Wow!  YE Shiwen (China), aged 16! swam away from the field!  What a swim!  World record too!  US 2nd and China 3rd.

      Unlucky Hannah, 5th place.

Incredible stat was that YE was only 7 hundreds of a second slower over the last 100m than Ryan Lochte swam, according to Ian Thorpe on BBC now.  I'd seen tweets earlier on that she'd actually gone faster, amazing performance!

On to tonight, Becky Adlington scraped through to the women's 400m freestyle final tonight.  It's not her strongest event, but even so, her qualifying was very tight this morning, and she is the reigning champion.  Tough ask for her in this though.  Likewise GB's Ellen Gandy goes in the final of her weaker event, the 100m fly.  The other final of the evening is the men's 4x100m freestyle relay.  Favourites on qualifying times are Australia v USA v France v Russia with Belgium, Germany, Italy and South Africa the other contenders.

Could be on for a world record here in the women's fly, just!  USA's Dana Vollmer wins in style!

What a swim by 15 year old Ruta Meilutyte of Lithuania in the women's 100m breaststroke semi final, she blew everyone away!  One to watch in the final!

Missed a final out  :f_doh:  South Africa's Cameron Van Der Burgh  wins gold in the men's 100m fly in a new world record of 58.46!  Australia's Christian Springer gets silver with Brendan Hansen of the USA taking bronze.  The 50m specialist took that one out from the gun, and managed to  hold on!

Hopefully that gives her the confidence to go for the 800m, her stronger event.

BBC have just shown a clip of the Aussie winning 4x100m men's swim team in the Sydney Olympics.  One of them looked the spit of Skrtel!  Just waiting for the final now.

I think Claire Baldwin just had a pop at Gary Lineker for dissing Adlington's bronze and the swim team as a whole.  Good on you girl!

Wow, the 4x100 final was absolutely fantastic, it looked like USA were certain to win but France got revenge from 2008 and won it in the final seconds. Very exciting!

Oh MsG!  My first ever gold! ;)  I just love the Olympics for the range of sports that I don't usually get to see.

Hang on, France are giving USA a proper battle, ooooooh France win the men's 4x100m relay!  That was a proper stonking race!  Fantastic swim by the French team!

Thiago Pereira from Brazil got a silver medal yesterday, really happy for him, he's a very hard working guy and his time to become an Olympic medalist has finally arrived.

Our biggest hopes are with Cesar Cielo though, who won gold in 2008.

Where are all these kids coming from, smashing world records at the age of 15/16/17?!? :D Amazing viewing though.

Very proud of Becky last night! Unlucky that she managed to win only a bronze despite swimming faster than her gold-winning time in Beijing.

Ryan Lochte only gets 4th in the men's 200m freestyle.  GB's Robbie Renwick places 6th.  But what a swim by Yannick Agnel from France to take the gold.  He's was miles ahead of the rest of the field, well a whole body length which is miles at this distance.  Incredible, that's 3 swimming golds so far for France!
