      Ryan McLaughlin (Released)
      Aug 06, 2012 11:35:47 am
Couldn't find a thread for him.

From what I've seen he's a player with a lot of promise. In fact, I like him more than Flanagan. That just confirms it:

Liverpool's Ryan McLaughlin called up to Northern Ireland squad

Liverpool teenager Ryan McLaughlin has received a first call-up to the Northern Ireland squad for the friendly against Finland in Belfast next week.
The 17-year-old defender has impressed at Anfield and made his Reds debut in the pre-season friendly against Roma at Fenway Stadium in Boston last month.
The former Glenavon full-back signed a three-year deal with the Premier League giants in 2011.
There is no place for Northern Ireland's record scorer David Healy.
The striker has no club at present after his contract at crisis-hit Rangers expired in June.
McLaughlin, who has played in Northern Ireland youth teams, made 12 appearances for Liverpool's reserves last season.
The Finland friendly is a warm-up ahead of Northern Ireland's opening World Cup qualifier against Russia in Moscow on 7 September.
Michael O'Neill's team takes on group minnows Luxembourg four days later at Windsor Park.
      Northern Ireland squad:
Goalkeepers: Lee Camp (Nottingham Forest), Roy Carroll (Olympiakos), Alan Mannus (St Johnstone)
Defenders: Gareth McAuley (West Brom), Ryan McGivern (Manchester City), Aaron Hughes (Fulham), James McPake (Hibs), Lee Hodson (Watford), Craig Cathcart (Blackpool), Chris Baird (Fulham), Daniel Lafferty (Burnley), Ryan McLaughlin (Liverpool)
Midfielders: Steven Davis (Southampton), Dean Shiels (Rangers), Chris Brunt (West Brom), Corry Evans (Hull City), Pat McCourt (Celtic), Oliver Norwood (Huddersfield Town)
Forwards: Jamie Ward (Derby County), Martin Paterson (Burnley), Kyle Lafferty (FC Sion), Andrew Little (Rangers)

Congrats to him. And remember he's only 17.

Been very impressed with him. Been keeping a close eye on him as he is from part of Belfast as me. He deserves the call up. One thing I would say is that NI are keen to bring young players in to the first team very early on to give them a few minutes, meaning they can not switch allegiance to ROI. That shouldn't take away from him though. Very talented.

Making me proud is our Ryan. Lad from the same part of Belfast as me, doing well at Liverpool. Here is an interview with him done by BBC NI done after the game with Crusaders in Belfast, which he comes across quite well in:

With this lad coming through behind Glen, Kelly, Wisdom and himself it's honestly the strongest in my memory we've been at right back in "potential". It's a shame for young Flanno, but I honestly don't see him in the same league as any of these lads and I don't think it will be long before McGlaughlin will be shoved up the ladder. Wisdom is of course more of a centre back where McLaughlin looks much more natural as a right back. It's brilliant to see competition for places actually getting this strong, let's hope it can start to spread across all positions.

He was the best player on the pitch last night. Looks like he has loads of energy. Always looked hungry to get down the wing and beat his man. Its great to see we have a very good batch of youngsters that can push on to greater things. Well done lad. I wonder can he play for the Republic.

Kid looks like the real deal. He may have some work ahead of him as when we are healthy we are pretty stacked at our fullback positions but that's a good problem to have and hopefully it will make him work his balls off to get in the first team.

Wish the lad would get a real go in the first team. Especially in the formation we're in. Wing back would fit him up and down.

How's he been doing in the u21's? Was thinking of him the other day.

Lucas out, Hendo central - could be a chance for him if Wisdom isn't first choice.

He's been doing well mate.  A few assists I think not sure if he's scored.  Was played on the right of a midfield 3 last week the lad did well.

why not start him against Newcastle and if he starts having a shocker bring on Johnson that way we dont risk Johnson getting injured again. Or give Ilori a chance as RWB as he's got the pace and looks comfortable on the ball

For those of you who haven't seen this yet:

Transfer window: Barnsley sign Liverpool's Ryan McLaughlin

Barnsley have signed Liverpool full-back Ryan McLaughlin on a 28-day loan deal.
The 19-year-old Northern Ireland Under-21 international is yet to make his debut for the Premier League side.
He told Barnsley's website:  "While I'm here I want to be playing as much football as I can and do well for the team."
McLaughlin could make his debut for the Championship strugglers in Saturday's game at Charlton

      http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/25668455

Wishing Ryan the best of luck. Anyone who has watched the under 21's will know this lad has obvious talent. Hopefully he will come back after impressing for Barnsley kick on and get his debut by the end of the year.

Wow my other half will be ecstatic if he helps to keep them in the Championship.  Really struggling to get any momentum going to pick up wins/points.  A new manager now in place, let's hope he gets to make an impression.

Do you think there is any significance in the fact that it is such a short term loan? Meaning..... he may be seen as close to challenging for the first team on his return?

Not sure mate, Teixeria had a 1 month loan at Brentford that proved pretty fruitless earlier this season.

We can hope so, many on here were calling for him to play when glen was out injured and I must say from what I have seen of him I would rather give him a chance then watch Glen have another heartless performance!
Rodgers will no doubt be monitoring him closely this season and this may be his trial by fire before getting his name into our first team.

At his age it's unusual to get a long term deal, it'll be a youth loan more than likely which means he's still available for our u21's games and usually the player still trains with the parent club.  I'm also guessing we won't want him away too long due to his injury issues over the last 12mths or so.

I'm convinced Ryan will one day be a regular 1st team player but at 19 he needs to be playing competitively at a higher level than u21's, this will give him the chance to experience first hand what it means to play professional football, fighting relegation and where every point counts.

Personally I think this is more Brendan preparing for next season.  If (when) we qualify for Europe we'll need as many young players as possible to have had some 1st team experience, not necessarily with us.  We're hardly going to 'fill out' the squad by buying half a dozen or more players, they'll come from the Academy but they need more than just training at Melwood and the odd bench appearance.

Also as we get nearer to May we need our strongest squad available for selection every week so I'd be very surprised if any youngsters who haven't already featured to get a game.   Unless we're totally depleted with injuries or completely out of the CL qualification places that is.

Great move, he needs some games at a professional club playing at a decent level. I'll be watching him with interest, as I feel that if he really does have the quality to make the step up, as a few of us on here think and hope he does, then we could well have a ready made replacement for Johnson.

Won't be making his debut today, the Charlton vs Barnsley game has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch - in all honesty there is no water in such it is just really muddy. Absolute wimps.

It showed Chris Powell and some other officials walking around the pitch, they never mentioned anything about it being frozen on Soccer Saturday so I don't know if that's partly the reason but it looked a little boggy in places.

Reported he's impressive debut for the Championship side Barnsley in 2-0 win vs Blackpool. Seemed he played right back and did well to stop Tom Ince.

Has to be given a chance when his loan period is done, surely. Can't help feeling a lot of clubs would have done so already.

Totally Rep, I remember myself and Si both saying he should be given a chance early in the season. I'm sure you and many others thought the same too. Maybe the loan has helped him progress at a steady rate and diving in the deep end wouldn't have been the right choice, we'll never know.

I do know that loaning out Wisdom and McLaughlin could very well hurt his more than their progress will help us long term. Should it have been avoided, afterall we had Kelly, Flanagan and Enrique available and hindsight is 20/20 but we're certainly paying the price at the moment.

It does seem rather ironic that we appear to have a surplus of top quality young fullbacks, yet we've struggled in that area all season  :-\

It'll definitely help us long term Luke but I don't believe that it'll hurt Brendan mate.

I doubt that FSG expected us to be where we are this season, they are still working on their 5 year plan of which we've got nearly 2 years left.

Yes hindsight is a marvelous thing and short term we possibly could have benefited from having these lads available for selection but we've done the right thing getting them out there, preparing them for a future at Liverpool FC.

There's no point us building from the Academy upwards if the lads aren't 'game ready' when they get their chance but hey, I'm preaching to the converted 'cos I know you well enough to understand this  ;)

      He is.

I'm a little disappointed we haven't seen him get even a place on the bench this season.

Although this loan should give him good experience ready for next season.

We attacked mainly down the left and right was unused for the majority of the time he was on the pitch. When he was called upon he was average, no major mistakes, just an average performance.

Personally, I think Conner Randall is a better prospect and when he came on, he had more of an impact and posed more of a threat than Mclaughlin.

Didn't do anything bad but didn't see him do anything special either. Our main joy kept coming down the opposite side. I have high hopes for Ryan too but for me he didn't really stand out, like I said though didn't really do anything wrong either, the game just seemed to pass him by. Then again I did miss about 15mins of the 1st half so can't comment on that.

Doesn't sound like he set the world alight, but great to see him in the frame for the first team even if it's only for a throwaway game. Hopefully he can kick on over summer and put in a claim for the squad next year.

I bet we'll see Ryan rocket up to around where Flano is, jumping ahead of Kelly and Wisdom. That does make sense given Kelly and Wisdom should be playing CB anyway.

What will happen with Jack Robinson? He might be the man we need to replace in the squad, although I have my doubts about Kelly too.

Ryan McLaughlin makes loyalty to Northern Ireland clear

      Last Updated: 28/05/14 11:10pm

Liverpool defender Ryan McLaughlin says he is fully committed to representing Northern Ireland following his first call-up to the national side.

The 19-year-old could have already made his bow for Michael O'Neill's side but asked not to be considered in a bid to try and break into the first-team at Anfield.

This sparked fears that the right-back was considering defecting to the Republic of Ireland but McLaughlin says this was never a consideration.

"I'm a catholic from Belfast and people think I probably supported the Republic as a kid so they then think there is something in it...maybe I'm not playing because I want to switch to the Republic," said McLaughlin, who has yet to play for the Liverpool first XI, but made nine appearances on loan at Barnsley last season.

"To be fair they have a right to think that because players have done it in the past and players have moved, but I met Michael face-to-face and I told him my reasons.

"I know supporters will be paranoid about it but I have no problem with that because I understand where they are coming from.

"When previous international breaks were on, the Liverpool first team were having games behind closed doors. Brendan Rodgers was there and I thought it was a brilliant opportunity for me.

"I didn't think I would play much for Northern Ireland so I thought it was best for me to stay at Liverpool and concentrate on that.

"People will believe what they want to be believe but that was the truth."

Having received his international call for Friday's friendly clash in Uruguay and the game against Chile on 4 June, McLaughlin says he is now looking to make the step up for his club.

He faces strong competition for a place with Glen Johnson, Jon Flanagan and Martin Kelly ahead of him in the Anfield pecking order but is hoping that the addition of European football to the Reds fixture list will help his cause.

"Liverpool are in so many competitions next season so hopefully I will get a chance because we will have to rotate the squad a bit," he said.

"The manager has shown he will take a chance on young players. Look at how Jon Flanagan came out of the blue under Brendan and took his chance.

"I know where I want to be and that is Liverpool. I will set my goals high; I want to make a name for myself at Liverpool and do well for the club."

It's primarily about Northern Ireland but also mentions some things about the reds too.

As I've said before on here one of my staff is a pal of his and went to school with him in Belfast and all he can tell me is Ryan is currenty back home in Belfast just after the first week of pre season training.

Really thought he might feature this season.

Not too sure why he's home Si but it's not a surprise he's not on the US Tour.  None of the younger players have been included if they've not already featured with the first team.

We've taken a 33 man squad as it is and for some of the fringe players it could be their last chance to impress enough to keep them.  Young Ryan isn't at that stage yet so if anything it's a good thing for him.

There's rumours that Inglewhite wanted to keep his u21 squad together for the coming season and they have their own pre season tour set up, so it's not all doom and gloom.

He probably would have if he hadn't missed the best part of 3 years injured mate.  You're very lucky to lose that amount of development time and still make it.

I was wishing for ages that he'd make it through to the first team. He was exactly the type of player that would fit our system, shame that his injuries meant that he was never able to develop as much as he should have done.
