You still need a squad with players who play in the secondary competitions. And he does have the odd blinder like v City last season.

Joe Allen is one of those players who when he's out of the team he seems to get better and better until he plays again and reality hits.

I wouldn't say Joe is something every team needs, I would personally label that a Lucas. A strong character, loyal and always ready step in, happy enough to sit on the bench if necessary but always giving 100% and with enough quality to push a proper starting defensive mid. We don't have one of those unfortunately and Lucas is pretty much our only specialised DM.

Joe simply doesn't have the quality to put any starting midfielder under pressure. He's the biggest non-entity I've personally seen on the pitch for us in many a year.

I'll caveat that with saying occasionally he'll surprise you and have a good game, but those games are so infrequent that they can be considered anomalies.

He's a good squad player. And he is really good at speaking Welsh.

That just about sums him up , it beggars belief how some people think he's a good squad player . Maybe his new beard may give him a bit more bite to his game . There were games where he played well and i thought he might come on but then he regressed . This will be his 4th season with us , how long more does he get ?

Suarez called Allen a "Spanish-style" passing midfielder in his book. Henderson too, which I personally don't see. Can see Allen playing well in Spain though.

Its only wrong in the eyes of those who rate him though , forget the fee for him as thats not his fault but in three years you would be hard pressed to find a handful of games where he was influential , for some thats good enough for some its not , its really that simple

I think it depends on how you judge his influence Andy.

Joe is never going to be a player like Gerrard who stands out even among the very best but I think when he plays he does have an influence on our game.

There's a very good reason other players like having him in the team, and it's because he does all the dirty work.

He doesn't do it as well as Lucas, but he has the pace that Lucas lacks.

      Yep.

I think if a player doesn't do anything flashy or have immediate assists for goals it sometimes is taken that they aren't important or haven't done anything.

Joe keeps the game ticking over and is a great link between defense and attack.

No problems with those who rate him mate that,s up to them we dont all rate players the same ,it would be boring if we did some like certain players some dont , you get that amongst fans at the game ,that,s what its all about just because he plays in red don,t mean i cant see his faults , i never want a player to fail just to say i was right that,s a sh*t attitude, i just feel he is very mediocre and we have had too many of those recently,if he suddenly upped his game that would be fine for me, just dont see us getting any more than we have had ,which isn,t enough.

Can't believe what I'm reading in here.

If anybody thinks Joe Allen has done enough to say he has proven himself as a Liverpool player then I despair.

Joe Allen himself wouldn't even say that.

Joe Allen does the "dirty work"?

now I've heard it all.  Suarez did the dirty work; Masch did the dirty work; constantly running people down, tracking back for the team, fighting and grinding and getting stuck in.

Joe Allen doesn't do dirty work.

In fact, Joe Allen doesn't *do* anything.

      that's the problem.

Joseph Allen, the Welsh Xabi eh...

Reality is that he gives the ball away in key areas of the pitch too often - and doesn't win it back. His forward / linkup play is poor at best and he doesn't have the physical impact he needs. That's no reference to his height or stature, he just doesn't get 'stuck in' - teams don't look at Allen and think, 'Christ, he's going to be a real handful today'. In his position you need that, I would even go as far to say the teams (the players if not opposition fans) would be a lot more worried by Lukas than Allen.

Only one person rates Allen, its the same person that rates Lovren too - our bloody manager!
