Disney buys Lucasfilm for $4bn - New Star Wars film out in 2015
      Oct 30, 2012 11:02:18 pm
      http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-20146942

As a Star Wars fanatic I am happy about this news even if my wallet will not be.

Star Wars Episode 7 will be out in 2015 with the other 2 films completing the new trilogy every 3 years there after. This meaning that when the new trilogy finishes in 2021 I will be 44 years young  :f_tongueincheek:

Any other fans on here? What are your thoughts?

Just release the originals, then F**k off.
1-3 was bad enough. Now a real Disney version.
Was just getting used to Clone Wars.

Lucas was already raping the franchise for everything he could get, it makes little difference who is doing it now, they're never going to be anything like the originals:

Honestly, not worried. Lucas not having complete control of the franchise anymore is not a bad thing. He was milking it anyways, having some other professional heads involved as they do another trilogy may not be a bad thing. I'm excited and skeptical at the same time.

Look at Marvel post-Disney buyout. Avengers was alright wasn't it?

Loved the originals (ESB is probably one of my top 3 of all time) but the prequels were mostly sh*te apart from a couple of scenes / sequences.

I dont hold any hope of these being any better!

Get ready for Jabba the Pooh and the like ;-)

I could see Mark Hamill coming back as a mentor....like alec guiness in the original. I could also see him self sacrificing as Obi-wan did in ANH to protect the 'new' new hope if you get me which could be his offspring or Han and Leia's.

I can imagine Han and Leia's son piloting a still falling to bits Millennium Falcon with Chewie....wookies live for over a 100 years you know!!! Im sure C3-PO, R2-D2 will appear. If they could get Ford, Fisher and hamill to return but not as leading characters I think it will make for a good transition into the new characters!

Storyline wise I could see Episode VII being about renegade Jedi learning 'The Dark Side' and thus the sith being re-born.

I want less is more when it comes to CGI. I want more on location shooting. I want Disney to stick to what made Star Wars Star Wars.

I am really looking forward to it....but nothing will beat the originals!

Seriously though. There have been a few films that I hadn't seen that a lot of people had banged on about but considering the HUGE popularity of the Star Wars films that's existed since the late 70s, were you two never tempted to see what the fuss was about?

Is there a film or series of films that you think you should have seen by now?  I've still not seen any of the Godfather Trilogy and not watched Goodfellas all the way through and don't think I'll ever bother.

Quite a lot of Gangster (and WWI & II) films leave me cold, just can't get into them.  With the Godfather though, it's the hype coupled with my general dislike for mobster flicks.  Been a few films that I just can't get through, with a gangster theme, Heat and Casino come to mind and I've fallen asleep trying to watch those two on a few occasions.

What makes it worse, is I've watched and enjoyed films that are probably far worse, it's just become a massive hurdle for me to even try them now.

I remember you mentioning this before rodders but I'm a massive fan of Mafia/Gangster/Crime films so each to their own I guess.

As far as I'm concerned though Goodfellas is an absolute masterpiece of film making.

If I never have to watch Goodfellas again it will be too soon.

And I've never watched any of the Godfather films.

But I can recite all three of the "real" Star Wars films. ;)

Is there a film or series of films that you think you should have seen by now?

Hmm. Can't think of any off the top of my head. I only saw The Matrix about 18 months ago, after years of hearing about it. Still haven't seen the sequels and aren't that fussed about seeing them either. I suppose if I'd seen it years ago, the CGI effects would have seemed far more special.
I'll get back to you if I think of any.

Star Wars Trio 'In Episode VII', Says Lucas
George Lucas has dropped the strongest hint yet that three icons of the original Star Wars movies will be appearing in the new film.

Rumours that Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher are reprising their roles have been doing the rounds - but nothing has yet been confirmed by Disney.

However, Lucas has now said the stars were signed up to appear in Episode VII when he sold Lucasfilm to Disney in October last year.

"We had already signed Mark and Carrie and Harrison - or we were pretty much in final stages of negotiation," the 68-year-old told Bloomberg Businessweek.

"Maybe I'm not supposed to say that. I think they want to announce that with some big whoop-de-do, but we were negotiating with them."

Perhaps realising he had revealed too much, Lucas added: "I won't say whether the negotiations were successful or not."
He may be 70 but Harrison Ford looks set to play Han Solo once again

Fans' appetite for the seventh movie in the franchise have been fuelled by comments by the actors themselves.

Fisher told a Florida newspaper this week she would again be playing Princess Leia. However a representative for the actress later claimed the comments were only meant as a joke.

Meanwhile, Hamill, aka Luke Skywalker, has also said that producers are "talking to us".

Disney announced in January that Lost co-creator JJ Abrams would direct the new film, due out in 2015, but the film-maker reportedly shunned the initial offer before later changing his mind.

Speaking to Bloomberg, Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy said: "He was immersed in finishing (Star Trek Into Darkness, the sequel to his first Star Trek movie). He felt that he might be exploring territories that were too similar."

Disney bought Lucasfilm for $4.05bn (£2.7bn) and Episodes VII, VIII and IX are being made over a roughly six-year period.

Despite the sale, Lucas said he was still involved with the new project and had been to storyline meetings to advise on technical matters relating to the Star Wars universe.

Not sure why Lucas is talking about this. Just glad he won't be back.

Can't be worse than the prequels so I don't see why fans are complaining about these sequels. With the Star Trek director, some award winning script writers (including Toy Story 3 writer and The Empire Strikes Back writer) and the original cast, surely it can't be worse than the prequels. If George Lucas was involved, no doubt would we be getting terrible actors like Hayden Christensen or Shia La Beouf on board. The man's ideas and casting for Star Wars and Indiana Jones 4 pretty much showed the guy had gone insane. One line summed up Steven Spielberg's feelings towards Indiana Jones 4 - 'I always stay faithful to George's stories'. Read between the lines and he's basically saying 'dont blame me!'. The alien in that film was the least of my worries, it was Shia La Boeuf's casting which was obviously there as a ploy to start a new franchise. Thankfully, everyone hated him.

Seriously though. There have been a few films that I hadn't seen that a lot of people had banged on about but considering the HUGE popularity of the Star Wars films that's existed since the late 70s, were you two never tempted to see what the fuss was about?

Tempted to see, they were not.

Before they had completed the original three Lucas was going on about making 10 or more movies, telling actors they'd be involved, etc. Shows he's never really been right in the head. One hell of an imagination to create Star Wars, though, I'll give him that.

Some thoughts from JJ Abrams about the upcoming movie:

      Quote
Mention the name JJ Abrams and there’s one question that immediately barges all others aside: what’s the plan for Episode VII? While he was able to approach Star Trek with a detached objectivity, how will he, as a huge Star Wars fan approach Star Wars' bold new era? Empire put that question to the man himself when we recently sat down with him at his Bad Robot offices in LA.

“I don’t know because we’re just getting started. So it’s a great question that I hope I’ll have a good answer to when I know what the answer is. There are infinitely more questions than answers right now, but to me, they’re not that dissimilar. Though I came at these both from very different places, where they both meet is a place of ‘Ooh, that’s really exciting.’ And even though I was never a Star Trek fan, I felt like there was a version of it that would make me excited, that I would think ‘that’s cool, that feels right, I actually would want to see that.

“How we were going to get there, what the choices were going to be, who was going to be in it – all of those things I knew would have to be figured out, but it was all based on a foundation of this indescribable, guttural passion for something that could be. It’s a similar feeling that I have with Star Wars. I feel like I can identify a hunger for what I would want to see again and that is an incredibly exciting place to begin a project. The movies, the worlds could not be more different but that feeling that there’s something amazing here is the thing that they share.”

Lucasfilm whipped fans into a frenzy this year when they announced that JJ Abrams would be the man to bring Star Wars back to the big screen. The director had turned down Episode VII last year, throwing people off the scent, but in a surprise volte face he subsequently accepted the mantle and became a new hope for the galaxy far, far away.

“My knee-jerk reaction was that I’m in the middle of working on the Star Trek movie and I can’t even consider it. But then time went by and I got further along working on the movie and getting to a place where I had done most of the heavy lifting. So when I met with Kathy Kennedy we just started discussing it and I was able to actually engage in the conversation. I went down to tell Katie, my wife, and I said ‘I had just a very interesting conversation with Kathy.’ That was the beginning.

“I will say that Steven [Spielberg] was very encouraging of Star Wars. It’s funny because I talked to him about it and it turned out he knew all about what was going on.”

Anyone here a Star Wars fan? Not totally into it but I'm wondering how they will incorporate the new characters with the originals. Ben Skywalker as the future lead? Wonder who will play him if so.
