      Most under rated bands ever
      Jun 08, 2013 02:28:03 pm
For you what bands just dont get the credit they deserve? When you see a top 10 list it will always contain  the Beatles the Sones Pink Floyd etc. But who rarely gets mentioned who should probably be in those lists far more regularly?

For me some of the most underrated bands ever are

      E.L.O
      Metallica
      Ocean Colour Scene
      Creedance clerawater revival
      Thin Lizzy
      Tears for fears
      Inxs
      ZZ top

Van Halen, ACDC? Don't often appear on top 10 lists that I've seen.

Zeppelin should be classed as the best ever imo, but rarely are.

Cream - Clapton, Baker , Bruce   what a lineup.

Lynyrd Skynrd - before the plane crash.

Iron Maiden - don't see them on too many lists

In terms of musicianship I've always felt The Darkness are totally underrated. The guitars, the vocals, the basslines... not to mention the effort that goes into the whole image of the band etc. Very, VERY talented guys who are often overlooked.

Also, if you guys ain't heard of a band called Steel Panther, give them a listen. Totally satirical and play on the stereotypes of the 80's music scene; sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll! Again, terrific musicianship, their guitarist Satchel (Russ Parrish) played for Rob Halford's (Judas Priest) side project "Fight". Ironically, their lead singer Michael Starr (Ralph Saenz) was a former assistant professor of English at an American University before turning to the foul mouthed project that is, Steel Panther!

Yes ,  Steel Panther , great 80's retro metal band.  Cant remember the name of song but it's with that video in a school, was hilarious for anyone that lived through that era.

Nils Lofgren, Peter Green, original Skynyrd, JJ Cale, off the top of my head
                                                               Leon Russell off my head.

I'll give you Ocean Colour Scene, but Metaillica - underrated?

They are always at the top of every thrash metal list you can think of.

Also have the highest sales of any of the top 4 metal bands (Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax)

Plus, they have won 31 awards for their music.

As much as I love Metallica, they went downhill from Load/Reload onwards.
      Masterful with The Black Album.
Loved "Garage Inc" and "S & M" but the proper material they did later on was terrible.

Gonna put this one out. A-ha. Underrated pop act with some fantastic tunes right up until they split three years ago. Not necessarily an albums band but a lot of their singles were pure pop that I enjoyed greatly! Far more than Take On Me which doesn't stand up to some of their other songs.

Also not really a band but he has been part of a few - Damon Albarn. The man's a genius. Love his ambition.

That really confounds mate, how can Damon Albarm be mentioned in the same time zone as A-Ha, who I find totally ridiculous, the man is a genius musically and although your scope in a musical context has to be awe inspiring I do find it perverse.
A personal view of course in that I am guilty of dismissing such offerings as banal and shallow.

Thanks! I wouldn't dare compare them as equals as I do genuinely put Albarn on a much higher pedestal. But I try to take each band/act on their own merits. I can see why you think they're ridiculous and while they should act as a 'guilty pleasure' (along with some Take That songs!) I have no real issue calling them anything other than a pleasure in the same way Abba are. I mean I LOVE the song Train of Thought and The Sun Always Shines On TV. Ridiculous band? Absolutely not! Great pop songs. I admit my musical taste is all over the place but I do like it that way. Some of it may not be "cool" but I would be dishonest to myself if I were to shun that in the name of image!

Blur and SO underrated. I would find it insulting to be compared to Oasis on so many occasions as their so different. Blur had a few commercial songs to compete with Oasis in the 90's and make some money, but their best songs are the ones that aren't released. Just as a comparison as to the musical talents, Noel and Liam have done naff all since the breakup and Damon Albarn made The Gorrilaz who are arguably even better than Blur. Pure underrated genius in my eyes.

Definitely think they're underrated - we can all name a couple of tunes off Parklife but the best songs by far are not the singles. This Is A Low, Badhead, Clover Over Dover - really really great tunes (love the backing vocals from Graham Coxon on the latter). Again, their first 'masterpiece' is not Parklife, it is Modern Life Is Rubbish. Still holds up with the very best Blur albums - probably my favourite one. Really cannot wait to see what this new proposed album they're going to make is going to sound like. Under The Westway was very much 'classic' Blur, rather than their experimental 2000s work.

I wouldn't say Oasis are better or worse, they're incomparable. Blur's albums after the Britpop phase are all brilliant, while there is no need to invest in Oasis after 1996 to be brutally honest (with the exception of a handful of tunes - Importance of Being Idle, Gas Panic, Part of the Queue). Oasis best work is Definitely Maybe and The Masterplan (b-sides collection) - much better than What's The Story Morning Glory in my opinion. Every song that Noel Gallagher wrote from 1994 to 1996 is an unbelievable rate of high quality, there wasn't a bad song in there.

And I think Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds is excellent. It was the first Oasis related thing worth buying since the 90s, far higher quality than any of the post Britpop albums. This song didn't make it on the album, but it's proof to me that he's far better off on his own.

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds - Alone on the Rope

What would be great is a Noel and Damon collaboration. Add the experimental side of Damon to the melodic tones of Noel and you'd get a great great album. Seeing as Noel scrapped his album with Amorphous Androgynous, he could do better by teaming up with someone he's more familiar with.

Stereophonics and Biffy Clyro, the latter especially.

Yeah, 'Yesterday, Tomorrow, Today' from The Phonic's 'Performance and Cocktails' album is stil my favourite song of all time and although not their normal style, 'Folding Stars' by Biffy is probably in my top 20.

But of a stretch to call them "underrated" though, Mags, considering they're widely regarded as one of the 90s biggest Brit bands. Think they did ok for themselves, haha.

I think they are a bit underrated. Damon Albarn as a talent though doesn't get nearly enough praise. It's his work with Jamie Hewlett be it Gorillaz or Monkey Journey to the West that is his most impressive work personally.

And as bizarre as this sounds I actually think U2 are underrated. I think their body of work, particularly from War in 1983 to Pop in 1997 is quite simply incredible and covers an unbelievable amount of ground. Taking away the (admittedly very big) aspect of Bono's massive ego and a patchy last few records that hasn't matched the grandness of the tours they have staged, U2 were one of the most creative and forward thinking artists in rock music. It's too easy to forget that sometimes.

As Bruce Springsteen said 'U2 hungered for it all, and built a sound, and they wrote the songs that demanded it. They're the keepers of some of the most beautiful sonic architecture in rock and roll'.

Then I REALLY don't understand this thread. U2 are one of the biggest bands on the planet and have been for some time, yet they can be classified as "underrated"?  :confused-smiley-013:

      The Heavy.

Only heard of them through Fifa 13 - Don't say nothing. And Borderlands - How you like me now.

Only have a few thousand views on Youtube, but they have some decent songs.

      LCD Soundsystem.

I got into these guys about a year ago.  They have a really big following, mostly underground. They never were a huge band like U2. Pearl Jam etc...but they should be. They put out brilliant albums and songs, they had insane live performances and sold out arenas, but they never got huge press or huge commercialization.  They broke up and had a sold out farewell concert at Madison Square Garden in NYC a little while back and it was amazing. But they are definitely worth checking out.

The video is from their farewell concert at MSG.

Love Tears for Fears too, classic 80's band, my favourite is Everybody wants to rule the world, I could listen to it over and over. Just listen to the beginning.

Hot Chip are massively underrated & brilliant live. Saw them at Glastonbury last year, only knew a few songs at the time but it was probably the best live performance I've witnessed
