Hillsborough: Fans' accounts and more police statements 'amended'
Fans' statements after the Hillsborough stadium disaster "may have been altered", the police watchdog has said.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission also said 74 further police statements could have been changed - taking the total number above 200.

Margaret Aspinall, of the Hillsborough Family Support Group (HFSG), said campaigners had long suspected that fans' statements were altered.

Ninety police pocket books previously unavailable have also been recovered.

They were unearthed by South Yorkshire Police recently, along with notebooks and other documents.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), which is examining police conduct in the aftermath of the April 1989 disaster, said last month it was looking for police notebooks after one officer it interviewed wrote notes on the day of the tragedy "contrary to instructions" from commanding officers.

IPCC deputy chair Deborah Glass said the commission needed to deliver "the last, definitive account" of Hillsborough, a tragedy which claimed the lives of 96 Liverpool fans.

Mrs Aspinall, who is HFSG chair, said of the revelation about the fans' statements: "This doesn't surprise me - we thought it happened, now it is in black and white."

The announcement comes a year after the Hillsborough Independent Panel reported its damning findings.

The IPCC said it would investigate after the panel's 2012 report revealed 164 police statements had been altered.

The panel found that 116 of those statements were either removed or changed to alter negative comments about the police operation at the FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.

The revelation that evidence from more officers may have been changed brings the current total to 238.

      'Never been seen'
The watchdog is reviewing allegations surrounding amendments to statements and the actions of police officers after the disaster at Sheffield Wednesday's stadium.

It is also looking at how West Midlands Police investigated South Yorkshire Police's conduct for the original inquiry led by Lord Chief Justice Taylor.

A separate team, led by former Durham Chief Constable Jon Stoddart, is investigating the response of all other agencies involved in the aftermath.

Ms Glass said an appeal for witnesses, to be launched next week, would form a "crucial element to our investigation into how West Midlands Police conducted its inquiries into the disaster".

She said: "We want to hear people's experiences of that process. We have already had a number of people contact us with concerns that their statements were amended and we have no doubt there are others who have not contacted us."

She added: "We have recovered West Midlands policy books that have never been seen by previous inquiries.

"We have recovered pocket notebooks from officers who were on duty on the day of the match. We are in the process of interviewing all the surviving officers whose accounts were amended."

In December, the original accidental death verdicts were quashed at the High Court and new inquests will be heard after the panel found that 41 of the 96 who died had the "potential to survive".

Those inquests are set to begin by 31 March at an unconfirmed location in the North West.

Started this on a new topic due to the astonishing revelation that fans' statements may have been altered.

      Totally speechless.

People need to be incarcerated for this.

Absolutely nothing surprises me any more.  The whole thing orchestrated from the very top.

Amazing how officers pocket books, that on the day they were told not to use as per normal procedure, have been discovered.

How many investigations and inquiries have there been?

They obviously didn't look very fu**ing thoroughly.  Wonder if the so called missing cctv tapes from the control centre will miraculously appear.

Just confirming what we all knew really isn't it? The things that have come out since the panels inquiry are incredible, one of the biggest cover-ups, if not the biggest in British history. Absolutely disgraceful and the thing that really gets me is that the police are there to protect the public, to serve the public's interest - and they completely betrayed us that day and now the net is closing in.

Like debs said, this hasn't come from some mid-ranking official - it was orchestrated from the very top.

You aren't going to get much higher than the witch Thatcher mustering her co-conspiritors at Hillsborough on national TV days after the tragedy.

      Hillsborough police video 'edited'
Police filming during the Hillsborough ''may have been edited'', a pre-inquest hearing has been told.
Pete Weatherby QC representing 21 victim's families, said an expert had assessed footage from the handheld cameras and coroner Lord Justice Goldberg has said he will consider a request for an independant expert to be called.
Fresh inquests into the deaths of 96 Liverpool fans during the 1989 FA cup semi-final will begin on 31 March.

Seven cops refuse to help enquiry
Seven former S.Yorkshire police officers have refused to help in the IPCC's into altered police statements, the watchdog has revealed.
The organisation's chair Deborah Glass said a total of 132 officers whose versions of events may have been amended had been invited for interviews, seven have refused the opportunity to establish the truth of what happened and the subsequent actions of the police.

As reported in the Liverpool Echo

Unbelievably corruption is still deeply rooted in the S.Yorkshire police force.

A lot of them and also eye witnesses working at the Club as Stewards etc have lived with those lies all this time mate.  Some of them are still classed as heroes in the area for standing up to all those drunk, ticketless fans that stormed through the turnstiles to murder their own.

Sickeningly a lot of their fans and locals who lived and worked in the area at the time don't believe there was a cover up and worse still believe what happened that day was retribution for Heysel.  They think it's a joke that we've been exonerated by the independent review last year claiming it can't be independent when the Bishop of Liverpool headed it up.

As far as Sheffield Wednesday fans and SYP are concerned, they did nothing wrong.

I started browsing the Owls Talk forum after the report came out last September Stuey and was horrified at some of the posts.  I don't really know what I was expecting from their fans but the hatred and vilification towards us shocked me to the core.  There was only an odd one or two posters who tried to reason with them but on the whole they stick by the original media coverage and blame the fans.

I understand that they're worried what impact any civil case against the Club will have but even so.....

Should be named and shamed, that is an absolute disgrace!

We, yes we, pay them to serve, protect and deliver justice for the innocent. For any police officer to refuse to help in an investigation that has already been hailed as a grave miscarriage of justice and 96 innocent lives lost should result in them all losing their jobs. They instantly prove they are not willing to protect the innocent, not willing to deliver justice and not willing to do the jobs that we, the lost and their families, have and continue to, pay them to do.

These people do not deserve to be police officers and they're a disgrace to the force and would immediately be my focus in the investigation. Screams they have something to hide.
