      Some fantastic pics there mate.

Apart from some obvious signs of poverty one thing that stands out for me on all of them is the lack of litter in the streets, my biggest pet hate I'm afraid  ;D

Martindales delivered coal mate, remember seeing their trucks when I was a kid, completely forgot about it 'till I saw the pic, doubt this kid worked down the pit he's far too clean, they had no showers in those days and took the coal dust home. He's clean as well for a coal delivery boy, that box he's leaning on looks like a shoeshine box with an advert on it for Martindale Coal Deliveries maybe, just a thought.

Nice one for clearing that up mate, just thought with Martindales being linked with coal that he might of worked in the mines.

Yet more brilliant pics mate, it's a pleasure looking through them.
I remember the flyover being built on Breeze Hill/Rice Lane very well, we moved to Speke from Walton and I used to get the 81D on Breeze Hill back to Speke on a Satdee, saw it built pillar by pillar until I graduated to lager and ciggies and my sister took over the pony express message service in the '60's.

It's as if it's frozen in time mate except for the flyover, watched that go up pillar by pillar waiting for the 81D on Breeze Hill, we moved to Speke from Maria Rd. in Walton and I used to go on messages every week when I was a kid.
The High St. in Woolton hasn't changed a bit, that pic has got to be over a hundred years old.
Can't make any faces out in the Cavern queue, that looks like the regular queue, they used to have a queue for visitors - coach parties and suchlike on the other side of the door and there was F***ing murder when they used to get in first, we used to make token noises after queue jumping 'cos we always knew someone on the door or near the front, everyone who'd been going there for a while carried on like that.
      Happy days.

They've just levelled Gateacre  Comp - suppose we'll get more housing association dwellings going up there.

I wonder if anyone has got a picture of Billy Liddell putting the ball in the net in a F.A.Cup  match at Anfield in the 1950's only for the louse ridden ref to blow his whistle for full time. The match was against Man City and there was a big photo in the Echo showing the ball in the net and the ref with the whistle in his gob. If anyone has a picture  I would love to see it.cheers

Thanks for that 6stringer but I am sure the picture I am talking about shows Billy Liddell on the right wing after he has hit the ball and it is on its way into the net and the lousebound b***ard of a ref with the whistle in his horrible gob.It was rumoured afterwards that the ref had a train to catch and so did not want to play extra time. The goal that wasn't by the way was in the Anfield Road end.

The only thing I can think of Billy is that you contact those nice people at The Echo and see if they have anything in their archives.. It's worth an email if anything mate.. or you could contact www.billyliddell.com
The goal pictured looks like it's at The Anny road end (?) could be wrong though.. Looks like it's snowing as well or is that just the print quality I wonder?..

Fantastic pic 6stringer ( as are all the others).
Always went into probe records and into extremes as a kid,
The old fly posters I remember well.notice one for afraid of mice
And dead or alive ( I'm sure Pete burns worked in probe for a while)?.
The empty shop to the far left opened up as back tracks if I remember correctly.

I was at that match and the goal was definitely at the Anfield Road end, It's that long ago the only thing that sticks in my memory is the sadness at the disallowed goal. I used to have the Echo picture but somewhere along the way it has gone missing.

To be honest the façade of St Lukes doesn't look dramatically different today, we call it the bombed out church but in fact it was an incendiary bomb meant to burn out and not directly destroy the  structure of the building. There's more structural damage been done by the vandals than the Lufttwaffe.

It cost my old man an old sixpence (tanner) for me  when I first went into the Boys Pen in Kemlyn  Road. When they moved the pen into the back corner of the Kop it cost 9 pennies in old  money. From memory I think it was one and six to get into the ground when the pen was moved to the Kop.

Probably one of the first photographs of Anfield.. Taken on the Kop between 1903-05, how things have changed...

I can remember this night like it was last week...Scotland clinch their place in the World cup Finals in Argentina with a 2-0 win over Wales at Anfield 1977.
The Tartan Army invaded Liverpool.. Scots of all ages, shapes and sizes, Kilts, Flag waving, Songs being sung all over the city.
The Pub at the top of our road was taken over , literally...along with loads of others..I think the one near us ran out of ale.. ;D
Even during the game there was Scottish fans everywhere around the ground just there for the crack, singing and having a great time..
What made it even more special was Kenny had just joined us and that night he became King Kenny to the massive Tartan Army when he rose to head in the winner and produce a roar out of Anfield that could be heard for miles around..believe me !..
Notice poor Joey Jones looking on helpless...

This looks to be staged. The two photo's of the lad are in different places.  Also, if you look at the photo of the three lads by the Leeds and Liverpool canal at Bootle the same lad is in the middle.  He is also second left on the photo of the seven lads. Obviously related to the photographer.  Sorry to ruin a good story. ;D

      Ice Rink .

You can just see the bus stop on the left of picture where I used to get off the 510 down from Prescot and then cross the road and walk the rest of the way down to the ground.

I paid sixpence to go in the boys pen at Goodison to watch Everton v Liverpool 1948/49. It was Everton's record crowd that day, over 78,000.  It finished 1 - 1.  Remember seeing Billy Liddell play at Anfield against Villa about the same time. He clashed heads with a Villa player and they were both laid out right in front of us. Later, he scored from a penalty.  He had the hardest shot I ever saw.

Billy Liddell had a tremendous shot that's for sure, when you consider the old leather casies that soaked up the water. I doubt that the modern footballer would be able to handle the old casie  and hit it as hard as the late great Billy Liddell did .I think they moved the boys pen from Kemlyn Road to the back of the kop in 1949.

In 1958 I met Bill Shankly when he was manager of Huddersfield Town. I was captain of a representative team playing against Huddersfield Town.  After the game I was introduced to him.  He looked me straight in the eye and, pointing to a young blond haired lad standing next to him, said 'let me introduce you to a future Scottish international'.  It was Denis Law aged about 16.
One of my favourite memories from playing football.

I was born on St. Paddy's day in 1936. Lived in Liverpool (Walton Hall avenue) until I was 15 when my Father's job moved us to Leeds.  Have lived down south (Berkshire) since 1969. Will always be a Scouser though.

I insist on it.  :)  People regularly tell me I don't look 78, you don't look a day over 77 they say.

We lived in a cul-de-sac on the opposite side to Littlewoods. It was our football pitch in the winter and our cricket pitch in the summer.  Learned all my ball skills kicking a tennis ball. Sadly, can't see us going back as her indoors is a Yorkshire lass. If we moved anywhere (unlikely) it would be back to Yorkshire.
