100 Goals?

After this afternoon's Goal-a-thon we have reached the dizzy heights of 82 goals scored in the League.

This got my little grey cells thinking, "Have we scored scored one hundred goals in a single season?"

As far as I can tell we........ have! Just once.

Way back before some of you were born we scored 106 goals in a single season (65/41).

1895-1896 we got our first, and so far only century of goals:

It was the old Second Division, finishing 1st, but what made this even more astonishing was the fact that the season was over a miserly 30 games.

On a side note we did beat a certain Newton Heath 7-1 at home, but we won't talk about the return fixture's result (2-5)

We did come close in the 1961-1962 season with 99 (68/31), again finishing 1st in the Second Division, but this time it was over a whopping 42 games.

So with 8 games to go, and 18 goals to score we rally have a good chance to reach that mighty achievement of netting 100 goals in a single season.

With the remaining 8 games (below) I can envisage we may struggle to keep scoring for fun in every game, but with an average of 2.25 goals per game needed we could do this.

Another little bit of history, today was our first win in Cardiff since the 1920s.

Why not!! It would be a great achievement showing how far the team has come from a few seasons ago.

Initially reading the title, I thought it was in regards to Luis Suarez' impending 100th goal for the club which is the stats I am currently looking at.

But, yeah I think we could easily hit 100 goals this year. 82 in 30, so a further 18 in 8 should be no problem.

When Chelsea scored 103 they 'only' had 70 after 30 games. Their last 8 games were total madness. Think they finished the season with 8.

57% of the 82 goals have come from the SAS.

To keep that ratio up for 100 goals, they need another 10 out of the next 18 between them.

We have scored 91 goals in all competitions. Whatever about the league, we will get 100 goals this season.

It would be a great achievement compared with other seasons, looking at the statistics.

Queen - I Want It All

Requires 12 from our remaining 6. Basically averaging 2 per game from here on in.

To put that in some context, we've scored at least 2 in 12 of our last 13 games with only the Baggies managing to keep us down to one goal at the Hawthorns.
