      Police 'told of Hillsborough fights'
Police on their way to Hillsborough thought they were going to stop crowd trouble, the inquest has heard.
Sgt. Richard Barnes said his colleagues were told fans were ''fighting on the pitch.''

He agreed officers en route were not looking forward to facing trouble and were told to ''wipe the smiles off your faces because people are dying.''
A fan in a pen near to where the disaster happened also told the court ''it was so full you could not raise your hands.''

'Ticketless fans let into Hillsborough' in years before disaster
A Hillsborough turnstile operator who worked at 1980s FA Cup ties took money to let ticketless fans into the stadium in the years before the disaster, the inquests heard.

Dr James Gauntlett, who worked at the club from 1979 to 1985, said at his turnstile 10% of fans did not have a ticket or were at the wrong end.

He said other stewards also allowed fans in while he worked there.

By 1985 the club had tightened up procedures, the inquests heard.

In April 1989, 96 Liverpool fans were fatally crushed at the FA Cup semi-final held at the stadium.

During his six years with the club, Dr Gauntlett said he worked during FA Cup semi-finals at Hillsborough in 1980 and 1981.

He said in 1981 he was told to allow fans "without a valid ticket" into the stadium to avoid a crush at the turnstiles.

      'Extremely dirty look'
Dr Gauntlett told the Warrington court that the "lessons to be learned" from 1980 and 1981 had motivated him to write to the Taylor Inquiry, which investigated the causes of the disaster.

He said at league games fans could buy tickets on the door. At those matches, there was an expectation the cash he had taken, along with the ticket stubs, would tally with the number of fans passing through the turnstiles.

He said a supervisor, Basil Jones, would give turnstile operators an "extremely dirty look" if their cash and count did not match and could eventually be dismissed.

But as FA Cup semi-final games were sell-outs, no tickets were sold on the door so they only collected ticket stubs.

Dr Gauntlett said: "We were explicitly told in 1981 by Basil Jones that our job was to get people through the turnstiles to avoid any crush in the turnstiles and if somebody arrived at the turnstiles without a valid ticket, you should allow them in."

He said that police would check tickets outside and his job was to "get them in to the ground as quickly as possible".

At each semi-final, he estimated 20 people went through his turnstile without tickets and "probably 60 or 70" went through with a ticket for a different section of the stadium.

Following a question by Jonathan Hough QC, junior counsel to the inquests, Dr Gauntlett said he took £70 in cash on top of his £10 shift payment in 1980. In 1981, he made "over £100".

Andrew Waters, representing Sheffield Wednesday, said taking money from ticketless fans was "stealing from the club".

Dr Gauntlett replied: "Nobody had a claim on that money. The club did not want the money. The club just wanted the ticket stubs."

      'Capacity exceeded'
Mark George QC, who represents some of the Hillsborough families, asked Dr Gauntlett about what effect taking money from ticketless fans would have on the numbers inside the ground.

He asked: "The net result of that would be that the capacity of the Leppings Lane would almost inevitably be exceeded if everyone turned up."

      Dr Gauntlett replied: "Yes."

Mr George continued: "And it follows from what you have said that this would have been completely obvious both to the club and to the police?"

"Yes, it should have been," Dr Gauntlett replied.

      The inquests continue.

No wonder they did not want a proper inquest.

      Hillsborough official 'spread lies'
A Sheffield Wednesday club official said he ''unwittingly spread a lie'' to BBC Radio that Liverpool fans forced open a gate at Hillsborough stadium.
BBC commentator Alan Green told listeners on the 15th April 1989 that club secretary Graham Mackrell had been told by police the gate was forced.
The inquest at Warrington were told Mr Mackrell could not recall which officer said this.

heard the evidence of one "officer" who said the crowd acted like madmen trying to get into the leppings lane end. Here is another view point "the Police lost control of the situation". These Police officers are still trying to find a way out of their mess they created.

      Hillsborough police 'lost control'
Police at Hillsborough ''basically lost control''  an officer working in the police control box on the day of the disaster told a jury.
Retired PC Trevor Bichard one of five officers in the control room was giving evidence at the new inquests.
He also told the jury no-one inside the control facility was monitoring the central pens where the tragedy took place.

Hillsborough match commander 'a fish out of water'
The newly-promoted match commander at Hillsborough was a "fish out of water" who did not provide "true leadership", inquests into the disaster have heard.

Former PC Trevor Bichard was on duty in the police control box on the day of the tragedy and worked closely with the commander, Ch Supt David Duckenfield.

He said former commander Ch Supt Brian Mole would have been alert to issues of an influx of people to the ground.

He was confident Mr Mole would have reacted "significantly differently".

Mr Mole was replaced by recently-promoted Ch Supt Duckenfield three weeks before the disaster.

The inquests in Warrington are looking into the deaths of 96 Liverpool fans following a crush at the Liverpool v Nottingham Forest FA Cup semi-final at Sheffield Wednesday's Hillsborough stadium on 15 April 1989.

Mr Bichard, one of five officers who were in the control box, is continuing to give evidence.

He told the jury on Monday no-one inside the box was monitoring the central pens where the crush took place.

There was a lack of organisation and control in the police box following a request to open exit gate C at the Leppings Lane end of the ground, he said.

He told the inquests it was up to Mr Duckenfield to regain that control.

      'Shell-shocked'
Paul Greaney QC, representing the Police Federation, said: "The simple reality is that Mr Duckenfield was not a leader in that control room during that critical period, was he?"

"I don't feel he was," Mr Bichard said.

Asked if he believed Mr Duckenfield did not offer true leadership on the day of the disaster, Mr Bichard said: "In my opinion, yes."

Mr Greaney asked: "Once he [Mr Duckenfield] was there in that control room on that day, did he seem to be a fish out of water?"

      "Indeed," Mr Bichard replied.

On Tuesday the jury was shown a log by Mr Bichard in which he recorded that at 14:55 GMT he overheard the message on the police's personal radios.

His log noted: "From officers rear [sic] of Leppings Lane terrace 'shut the gates at the back of the tunnel'."

Mr Bichard said after reflecting overnight, he thought the note referred to shutting an exit gate, which had been opened to allow fans who had massed outside into the ground.

On Tuesday, the court heard it referred to gates across a tunnel that led to pens three and four on the Leppings Lane end.

Mr Bichard said: "When that was raised yesterday and I'm sure you could see from my reaction, I was rather shell shocked by it."

Exit gate C was opened on the orders of the police at 14:52 GMT that day.

It is estimated more than 2,000 fans went through it during the five minutes it was open.

Asked if Mr Mole would have allowed gate C to be opened "without making some contingency", Mr Bichard said the former commander would have "been down there and been on the ground".

He said he was "fairly confident" he "would have been alert" to the issue of a sudden influx of people into the ground.

      'Bolts were bent'
On Tuesday, Fiona Barton QC, who represents South Yorkshire Police, showed Mr Bichard CCTV images of the crowd outside the Leppings Lane end which, it was claimed, showed an operation by mounted officers to close perimeter gates.

At 14:52, an exit gate C was opened followed by a sudden influx of fans and the fatal crush on the Leppings Lane terraces. Two minutes later, the CCTV showed the perimeter gates open.

Ms Barton asked: "Do you maintain your view that so far as you're concerned that the crowd outside forced its way through the outer gates?"

Mr Bichard replied: "That's what it appears to be on there, yes."

The jury also saw photographs taken after the disaster showing bolts used to close the gates were bent.

      The inquests continue.

      Hillsborough PC's comment 'removed'
A police officer's recollection that it was ''obvious'' a crowd outside Hillsborough stadium would not fit inside was removed from his statement, inquests have heard.
PC Harold Guest monitored the number of fans entering through the turnstiles.
The jury heard he had noted there would ''not be sufficient room'' for all the fans entering via Leppings Lane.
The comment was removed after South Yorkshire Police ''received legal advice'', the inquests heard.

      'Orders given' on Hillsborough notes
A police sergeant working on the day of the Hillsborough disaster was told what to put in and leave out of his statement by a senior officer, an inquest into the deaths was told.
Philip Colin Lomas said the instructions were given because of 'blame' towards South Yorkshire Police.
He said Assistant Chief Constable Stuart Anderson said the disaster was the fault of ''drunk, ticketless fans''.

We get irrevocably higher up the structure of deceit but make no mistake the orders were coming from the very pinnacles of power in Whitehall at that time.

Police officer shouted at people fleeing the horror of Leppings Lane 'get back in you F***ing scouse bas**rds'.
Alison Willis who suffered broken ribs and bruising in the crush said the pressure in the pen was unbearable, she was one of the lucky ones to get out but when she asked why the police were doing nothing she was told to ''get back in you scouse b***ard''.

      Hillsborough blame 'lies with police'
A former police sergeant has told the inquests the ''primary blame'' for the disaster ''had to lie with the South Yorkshire police''.
Stephan Payne said the SYPF was in charge of the crowd control 1989 FA Cup semi-final tie, they ''failed'' in their role.
He said he could see people's faces ''squashed up against the fence'', he said police control ''had got it wrong''.
Mr Payne also recalled being encouraged to record drunkenness and poor behaviour of fans in his statement.

Good of you to comment Skip, I don't report in depth just the striking aspects of the inquest. Some things like the conduct of the police are duplicated to make a general point, a point that is all too familiar to LFC supporters.

      'Delay' in opening Hillsborough gate
It may have taken up to half an hour to ''drag'' casualties from one of the terrace pens during the Hillsborough disaster, the inquests have been told.
Lilyan Sosnowski, a PC on the day, agreed that the design of the pen and the number of people in them made it difficult to reach the injured.
She also agreed there was a delay in getting the gate to the pen opened.
