Joel, from The Last of Us
The Last of Us - Story Trailer

It's clear he's had to do some pretty dark stuff early on.
A classic, and maybe well used, formula of redemption.
Although with a twist at the end.

      Shepard, from Mass Effect
Mass Effect 3: Take Earth Back Cinematic Trailer

Another dark character playing the hero.
Have a feeling this could go badly wrong soon.
Deliberately stayed away from the on-line gameplay
and it cost me in my ending. Please don't make this
another F***ing Modern Warfare/Black Ops multiplayer.

I loved the development and options on this.

      FemShep
Mass Effect 3: Reinstated (FemShep Trailer)

One for female game fans, who want a bit more than just Lara Croft.

Plays exactly the same as the male Shepard,
although sometimes the carry over from male to female just smacks of lazy,
as the same buddy/banter interaction is involved in both male and female characters.

Falcon Patrol for the Commodore 64 - my brother and I played non stop for 12 hours when my mum and dad were sorting out my granny's funeral in 1984.

Ridiculously basic but a real visceral memory for me.

Basically you were a fighter pilot flying over what (I think) was meant to be Beirut and, as well as bombing, you had to steer a safe passage and land / refuel too.

I loved Joel too, and Mass Effect has some great characters indeed! My personal favourite is Garrus Vakarian: Mass Effect - Garrus Tribute

While playing that game I kept thinking that I wanted to play as him. Very interesting and cool character.

Another character I love is the Pyro from Team Fortress 2. Speaks for itself probably, but just a really fun character from a game I still enjoy to this day: Meet the Pyro

And I have to mention the protagonist from my favourite game of all time. The character doesn't have a name but tends to be called Traveller, the game is called Journey:

No game has made me feel more connected to a character. Very innovative and groundbreaking game I think, and stunning too: Journeyâ„¢ Launch Trailer

Appallingly, The Last of Us remains incomplete on my shelf. Really will have to get on with that one.

For me it has to be John Marston from Red Dead Redemption. A character with a fascinating life who despite his outlaw past is a proper family man of decency and good grace. The end of the game is astonishing. Probably the best game I've ever played.

I highly recommend you finish TLoU.
Phenomenal game. You'll either love or hate the ending.

I'm sorry to say I haven't played Red Dead Redemption.
I really need to sort that out.

My personal favourite is Garrus Vakarian:

Agree with this. Mass Effect has some brilliantly layered characters.
I use Garrus in every mission, when he becomes available.
Nice little touch near the end where he brings you shooting.
      Him and er Liara. Ahem.

I've been thinking about this for a while.  My gaming started on the Sinclair Spectrum 48k with rubber keys and I upgraded until the 128k +2A with the built in tape recorder.

Had thousands of games for it, largely due to the ease of pirating and the two Sinclair magazines I used to purchase usually came with games as well.  If I'm going to have to pick a character that was a favourite or just represented this era of gaming for me, it would have to be Dizzy.

Looking back, or just trying to remember though, it wasn't one of my favourite games, too f'n hard.  Games that did hold my attention though, were Chequered Flag, an F1 (ahem) sim, Tracksuit Manager, an international football manager sim, ATV Simulator, Ninja Scooter Simulator - so annoyed when I thought I'd completed the game only to find it just looped back to the beginning, Zzoomm, Minder - essentially an Elite lite game.  2 football games ruled the roost for me, one I can't remember the name, but the screen was a large pitch, the players were squares and you passed with the number keys, shot with the 's' key.  Took seconds too load and was addictive fun.  The other was Footballer of the Year, both 1 & 2, though I preferred 1.  You had chances too score from assorted scenarios, if you had the money to buy chances and you would try to earn them by gambling and getting transferred.  Crashed far too often, but it wasted hours of my life.

      That's part 1 covered... ;)

I just read this on Reddit's Mass Effect thread:

"You're not a red blooded straight male unless you've banged Garrus as Femshep."

      Somebody's a big Garrus fan.
