Sami Hyypia has emerged as a candidate for the manager’s post at Brighton.

The 40-year-old former Liverpool defender was sacked by Bayer Leverkusen last season but guided them into a Champions League qualification position before leaving.

The Finn is still highly-regarded at Anfield where he spent 10 years as a player and is well connected in the British game and abroad.

Brighton have been talking to various candidates after Oscar Garcia resigned at the end of the season. Garcia, who held informal talks with Celtic has since returned to Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Malky Mackay, Steve Clarke, Lyon coach Remi Garde, Tim Sherwood and Chris Hughton have all been considered at Brighton but many of those names are also pushing for the chance to speak to West Bromwich Albion and Southampton.

Hyypia was in charge of Leverkusen for two years and won 50 of his 92 games, losing 27.

A flurry of bets on Tuesday installed him as some bookmakers’ favourite for the Brighton job.

Its from the Daily Fail, but other press are running it.

I hope he gets the job it would be nice to see him back in the country.

I fully agree, but I suppose Sammi would prefer management.

Can't believe I had to come in here to correct the topic spelling of one of our best ever defenders.

Best of luck Sami! Cracking club down there on the South coast.

I think I'd prefer to see him back here as our defensive coach :)

      Fixed that for you! ;)

Good to see him back in management. Brendan's probably going to get a few phone calls off of him regarding loans I reckon.

See Sami has left Brighton today

I know it's old ground and I know I've been against a Steve Clarke type coming in as a defensive coach but I would certainly be happy if Brendan approached Sami for the following reasons

Sami has been sacked from his two managerial jobs, his reputation and confidence may be low, but he lose the club and would carry a deal of respect here from us and within the defenders..
I have been against a defensive coach as I believe that a team should play within a managers style and that within open play it would give mixed messages to the squad on how to approach games but even if Sami came in and ran sessions with the defenders on how to defend set pieces, nothing in open play but set pieces we would be a better unit

Don't think it will happen but I'd welcome it

      Head up Sami.. YNWA

Would be fantastic to have him back here as a coach. Look at West Ham , apparently, they say Sheringham's coaching and influence has improved their strikers.

It was hard for Sami to make a go of it there considering their owner sold their best players .

Don't know how true it is, but a good mate from mine down Liverpool says we are monitoring Sami Hypiia's situation at Brighton in the hope of bringing him in as a coach to work with our defenders and defensive organisation.

Any one else hearing anything ?

Interesting, maybe something in it after all.

Sami is the best CB I've seen at the club at my lifetime. An incredible man, both on and off the pitch.

But bringing him back as a defensive coach.. I'm trying to say this without it sounding too brutal, but if he can't remedy Brighton's defensive woes in the championship, will he have much of an impact in the Premiership? Playing football and coaching football are two completely different kettles of fish, and it's not worked out for him as of yet latter wise. Just seems abit of a sentimental punt for me.

That being said, a defensive coach is a neccesity at the minute for me.

Sami got sacked at Leverkuson because the couldn't defend, sh*t even Moyes put 5 past them with United. And things have not been any better at Brighton
Can't really see the credentials for all those calling for him to brought back as a defensive coach.

Rodgers won't work with a defencive coach and i don't think Sami has the credentials to be one . Carra on the other hand could be and would be worth a shot if Rodgers were to take a gamble .

Great players don't always make great managers, I think he needs to be at best a number two for a couple of years to learn.

Hyypia carried Carragher for a number of seasons, and was a very under rated defender.

That said, Carragher is more of a student of the game, and was well known for it in the dressing room.
Such a pity he likes playing silly bugger political games though.

Might want to change the title of the thread for Sami as he's taken the head coach job at FC Zurich.

Hyypia takes charge at FC Zurich

Former Liverpool captain Sami Hyypia has been appointed as the new head coach of FC Zurich.

The Finn has agreed a two-year deal with the Swiss outfit and will assume the position from August 31.

Zurich are five games into their league season and are currently seventh in the 10-team standings.

Hyypia has previously held the managerial reins at Bayer Leverkusen and Brighton & Hove Albion.

He spent a decade at Anfield, clocking up 464 appearances and becoming a huge fan favourite.

The centre-back was a key figure in the Reds’ sensational 2005 Champions League success and lifted six major trophies in total during his stay.
