Instead of loaning him out, i'll rather keep him in the squad, only if we get around 10-13 mil pounds for him it would be a good transfer for the club.

My suspicion is under those circumstances (the offer) that Lucas will be at the club until he's 74.

If I have to be honest I am happy he is staying and fight for a place, He can be useful in some of the many games ahead
and if he picks his best form of a few seasons ago he can be a big  figure  squad

I agree. If he was played as DM for a few games people would see how the team responds. He isn't given the chance so we can't judge.

With all the new signings, his days are probably numbered - but he's one of the more experienced guys in the squad so not unhappy he's staying.

I'm not sure "queue" is quite the word I'd use mate. Brascombe saying we had no offers for him whatsoever, loan, transfer or otherwise.

Still has a good 45 in him, just a shame he can't last longer, that first half against Southampton is still better than anything Gerrard's shown this season.  Not a dig at Gerrard, just an observation, though his second half at Spurs wasn't far off.

      You love him really Mick.

Seriously though mate do you see any merit in having him in the squad even in the short term?

I think a few Liverpool fans overrate Lucas a little bit. Was an excellent player a few years ago but he has severely deteriorated significantly in the last 2 years to the point where no club is even willing to touch him. Injuries being the main down fall. I haven't seen anything to suggest he'll hit that form again, unfortunately.

I still think he can contribute to the team this season but I think it's only a matter time before Can is ahead and in the team before Lucas is.

If we had sold him we would have needed a replacement though, Gerrard, Henderson, Can and Allen isn't enough to play in 4 competitions. So short term I think there's benefits to keeping Lucas but I would be surprised if we didn't sell, loan, or give him away next season.

I agree with some of this Tom and disagree with some.

I think Lucas has also been underated by many Liverpool fans over his time here but agree that injuries has taken it's toll and I also don't see him hitting the excellent form he had from a few seasons  back.

Still will have a part to play over the coming months though.

I see loads of merit in having him in the squad mate. He is the only midfielder we have at the club who could step in for Gerrard IMHO (I don't think Can Can if you get my drift) and he will no doubt need to at some point. I may not "love him" really Si but I actually do quite like him as a player on his day. The bit I could never abide with Lucas was that when anybody dared to criticise him for anything whatsoever, or even worse suggest that picking him every week might be "holding us back" you'd be met with people rolling on their backs calling you allsorts from clueless to being just a c***. My references to the fact that we actually DO look a better team without him, and that Gerrard CAN actually play as a holding mid, and that contrary to claims on here NOBODY was clamouring to buy Lucas for 12 million quid or anything like it (despite "all the best managers in the World rating him highly etc etc") is more of a nudge to those people really than it is to Lucas.

The player I don't mind, it is his ex posse of admirers which got on me tits  :f_steam:

I think he was a great squad player that started to often, which certainly wasn't his fault and was a very good player who has obviously declined.  I think he got vastly underrated by some.  The time I thought this was most obvious how overlooked he was, was the derby against Everton when Masch went to RB after we went down to 10 men, Lucas put in a stunning display at DM but barely got a mention during the wave upon wave of plaudits for Javier. I'll admit, at his peak, he was never a great player, but you don't need 11 great players to make a great team. Some of the covering he did, for both full backs and the way he seemed to be always helping kids breaking through endeared me to him, he'll never go down as a great player, but he should go as down as a great servant to this club.

Fair enough mate and as you know I 'love him' a bit more than you do but I quickly realised last season that his very best days were behind him and the Lucas/Gerrard midfield was only ever going to have one winner and I am happy to admit I got that one wrong even though I still think to this day that Stevie gets a bit of a by ball of some simply because of who he is.

Moving on though I actually disagree with you and feel Can is abel to fill in that role although I think Lucas experience will get him the nod especially int the League Cup games so I see Lucas have a role to play at least to January.

Yeah, you are right there. There's a group that overrate him, and another group that underrate him.

Probably the one player that splits fans opinion, more than most.

However I think nearly every supporter would probably agree that Lucas' best days are behind him, and that in the near future he'll probably be surplus to requires.

He is a very good servant to the club though, never complained and he done well endearing to the fans after the tough start he made.

You don't need 11 great players to make a great team but I do think Lucas' decline is that significant he is not even decent anymore. He has lost all pace and can't cover the full backs, plus he gives away annoying fouls as he can't keep up with the other players.

He can contribute but only in a few games per season. Not a player I think we can rely on in large periods of games.

He would suit the Italian league though, a slower pace should play to his strengths.

In the context of him leaving for nothing Mick I should really have used inverted commas myself on the word ''quote''.

That period just before he got injured he looked as though the sky was the limit in terms of his career. But just a shame how those two injuries seem to have cut back on his potential.

Sadly he wont be the last player who's career takes a huge hit due to injury.

As a fully paid up member of the Lucas Leiva police i have to admit that his role at the club is becoming increasingly redundant. Now that we have Henderson, Lallana, Allen and Can to run hard and pressure the ball, the need for a specialist DM has evaporated (which was surely the originalk plan to maximise Stevie's assets).
