      The Number 7 Shirt
      Jul 11, 2014 04:21:59 pm
Who would you like to see in it?

Any of the possible new signings, any of the confirmed signings or a player who was here last season?

I think giving it to Sterling would be a massive show of confidence for the lad.

Just hope we don't give it away as willy nilly as we did the Number 9 shirt last season.

      Lambert.

It was his number for Saints and as a Liverpool fan, it'd mean the world to him. However he won't be here long term and won't be a regular starter in that time, in my opinion, it may go elsewhere.

If it does then Sterling would be my choice.

I agree with Sterling, but we may end up giving it to Markovic I think. Would be a huge statement having the likes of Coutinho and Sterling/Markovic in the number 10 and 7 shirts respectively. Faith in the youth.

Sterling, someone was wearing his shirt the other day I noticed got mentioned and I wondered then if it could be a sign that he's getting a nice upgrade in number.

      He's earned it.

Unless we sign a player with the ego of a great player Id be careful here. Its our star number. Handing it to a young one like Sterling/Coutinho/Markovic will come with the pressure of living up to high standards of former number 7's

Have a bang on Modric Brendan
Looks like Madrid may have some over capacity soon?

There's some great players out there.
Quite a few like our own Coutinho who didn't make the World Cup.o

Stephan Kiessling, Marek Hamsik, Antione Griezman, Arda Turan i'd happily take any of these 4 along with Loic Remy or Wilfred Bony.

Off topic slightly, but seeing people are calling for Sterling to get 7, wouldn't it make more sense for Sturridge to be given a more prestigious number, e.g 9 or 7.

I don't think it is a shirt number that we should award too easily. I am happy to wait for the right player to come along.

A little bit of context for the debate - I found this that charts the wearers from Keegan.

Me? I'd let Lambert have it for a year or two till Raheem grows into his destiny, as he surely will.

Has to be Sterling or Coutinho surely?

Coutinho will be sticking with the number 10 and I think that's the right decision. I'd be happy enough for Sterling to get the number 7 though, sure it would help kick him on even more wearing such an iconic number.

Would love to see Sterling in it. Plays like a proper modern #7. To repeat what's been said above, really hoping it's not just given out to anyone like Aspas got the #9 kit. Both of those numbers should be on the pitch often.

      What's the point?

The vast majority were playing in the days when you wore what number was available. If you got injured, whoever replaced you would usually take that number rather than it being "their" number. It's not as if they were Liverpool's number 7 for a sustained period of time, they may of wore it once or twice, then either gone back to "their" number (Rush 9, Aldo 8, Heighway 9 etc) or been replaced by the regular number 7 (Keegan, Dalglish, Beardsley ect).

Exactly. Is Lambert likely to be a regular starter? Would it diminish our value of the iconic number 7 shirt were it to be worn by possibly a regular sub?

I also think that as Lambert is a fully versed member of LFC and it's values that he himself would see it as a misguided error - setting aside his boyhood dreams and sentimentality. He'll probably ask for the 9 seeing as it's already been besmirched.

I think it may also be fair to note that the vast majority of kids/players in the game these days couldn't give a flying f**k about a clubs tradition to its numbered shirts. To them, picking their 'own' number is not conforming it's just a further excuse to express their own identity.

It'll probably be Markovic's but I think I read that his lucky number he wants is 50 or something, might be totally mistaken coz it doesn't even make sense.
It's an important number yes, I'm not going to get superstitious about it though, Brendan might give it to Sterling as a statement about how he's progressed and how highly he rates him etc

Why doesn't it make sense that Markovic will want the number 50? He wore that number at Partizan and Benfica.

Exactly. Is Lambert likely to be a regular starter? Would it diminish our value of the iconic number 7 shirt were it to be worn by possibly a regular sub?

Lambert isn't likely to be a regular starter but I don't see the value of the number 7 being diminished should he get either. Since the Premier League began, only McManaman and Suarez were of enough quality to wear the number 7.

Clough, Smicer, Kewell and Keane were all sh*t in my opinion. For some reason people believe we can't dare criticise Vladi because of his goal in Istanbul (as well as the penalty) but the truth is he weren't good enough for the club. So the iconic number 7 has already been dragged through the mire in the past 25 years.

Lambert getting it, wouldn't hurt in my opinion because he isn't expected to be the world class player. Clough, Kewell and Keane all came with huge expectations. Smicer, not so big but still a fair bit. Lambert is expected to be a bit part, where if he can contribute 10 goals he's probably done well.

Sterling or Markovic, if he is as good as people who know him say.

We've also got the #11 shirt available as well (assuming the Assaidi rumours are true). I think Sterling would suit that as well.

I'd leave the 7 jersey for a year and if Sterling has another stellar season and we haven't bought another big player worthy of it then give it to him.

As for the number 9 I'd like Studge to have it, he's earned it!

It's been reiterated, yesterday to me on lfctv, I thought I heard it wrong, simple as that really.. no big deal, now I know he likes that particular number.. . for luck or something.
He's won the league over the past 4 years with different teams.. or wasn't it different teams?

I remember Derek Riordan couldn't get his number 10 jersey when he re-signed for Hibs from Celtic so the league allowed him to wear the number 01 for the first season of his 2nd spell there. I always found THAT to be a strange request.

Lazar asking for #50 seems sane compared to that, haha.

Apparently Remy was set to take the Number 7 shirt so I'm guessing our next attacking signing will take it?

Why should we retire the no.7 shirt? What a ridiculous suggestion. Just give it to someone who'll warrant wearing it. Was quite surprised we were going to give it to Remy though. A little insulting given the man who just had it.

As for Sterling I'd leave it a while. Wouldn't want to give a 19 year old an ego boosting moment. Something we ought to avoid doing.

Or it could help push him on even more and fight even harder for his place knowing he has such an iconic number.

In the ideal world that's what I'd like to see. If it gets used this year it will have to be a new player though. Wouldn't mind if it didn't get used this season and got given to Raheem at the start of next season.

Suppose there would be some pretty pissed off supporters with STERLING 31 printed all over their new kits if we gave it to him now.

It could, but it'd basically be saying to him you are now our star player. It's a jersey you have to be brave to wear, and Luis was obviously very much a fearless person under any circumstance.

Give it a year, or pass it on to Reus

It's actually something that I had given a bit of thought to and I also felt that Sterling was the most deserving. As people have mentioned though, it could put unnecessary pressure on him at the moment. If he has another year or 2 at (or beyond) the level he showed last season I think it would be an idea to offer him the shirt, as it might even give extra incentive to stay if other clubs tried to snatch him.

I want Sterling to get it in all honesty. Some say it might give him the wrong idea and he may start to become complacent, but didn't he get a 5 year contract at the age of 18 which saw his wages go from 2,000 a week to 30,000 a weak. That didn't seem to deter him from wanting to get better and develop, nor will handing him the no.7 shirt.

In my eyes the no.7 shirt should be given to a player who is a possible game changer, an individual who's footballing abilities make you get off the edge of your seat with excitement, a player who you always expect something "magical" from when on the ball. Didn't get to watch Kenny but i hear he was a magical type of player on the ball as was Suarez and as will Sterling.

If we give him this responsibility with the further support of Gerrard and Rodgers i think he will shine and prosper, he really is going to be something special imo and i'd rather no one else wears the shirt at this moment in time.
