Sturridge will probably change to 9. Wonder if Markovic will get 7 straight up.

      I'll have it.... ;D

Keegan , Dalglish , Suarez...  before, so it has to be someone really special I'm afraid... Sterling maybe....
Didn't a certain Harry Kewell wear it?.. how did that happen?... :o

Hope it's not handed out as if it has no meaning like the way Aspas was given the number 9 shirt.

Agree completely, can't figure out why they gave him that shirt.

Has to be Sterling or Coutinho surely?

Coutinho will be sticking with the number 10 and I think that's the right decision. I'd be happy enough for Sterling to get the number 7 though, sure it would help kick him on even more wearing such an iconic number.

Would love to see Sterling in it. Plays like a proper modern #7. To repeat what's been said above, really hoping it's not just given out to anyone like Aspas got the #9 kit. Both of those numbers should be on the pitch often.

Would be nice to see Lambert get it for a couple of season as noted above, and then Raheem if he is still as sh1t hot as he has been this season.

I'd let Lambert have it for a year or two till Raheem grows into his destiny, as he surely will.

      Barca?  :P

As for the 7 shirt, I'll wait till the transfer windows slams shut ta.

I'd love to see Rickie handed an iconic number (7 or 9), more so for the sentimental value it would have to him as a lifelong supporter. It would be nice :)

Would be disappointed if Sterling didn't get it this year. If he keeps up his rapid progression he'll be our best player next season.

      What's the point?

The vast majority were playing in the days when you wore what number was available. If you got injured, whoever replaced you would usually take that number rather than it being "their" number. It's not as if they were Liverpool's number 7 for a sustained period of time, they may of wore it once or twice, then either gone back to "their" number (Rush 9, Aldo 8, Heighway 9 etc) or been replaced by the regular number 7 (Keegan, Dalglish, Beardsley ect).

Exactly. Is Lambert likely to be a regular starter? Would it diminish our value of the iconic number 7 shirt were it to be worn by possibly a regular sub?

I also think that as Lambert is a fully versed member of LFC and it's values that he himself would see it as a misguided error - setting aside his boyhood dreams and sentimentality. He'll probably ask for the 9 seeing as it's already been besmirched.

I think it may also be fair to note that the vast majority of kids/players in the game these days couldn't give a flying f**k about a clubs tradition to its numbered shirts. To them, picking their 'own' number is not conforming it's just a further excuse to express their own identity.

It'll probably be Markovic's but I think I read that his lucky number he wants is 50 or something, might be totally mistaken coz it doesn't even make sense.
It's an important number yes, I'm not going to get superstitious about it though, Brendan might give it to Sterling as a statement about how he's progressed and how highly he rates him etc

Why doesn't it make sense that Markovic will want the number 50? He wore that number at Partizan and Benfica.

Lambert isn't likely to be a regular starter but I don't see the value of the number 7 being diminished should he get either. Since the Premier League began, only McManaman and Suarez were of enough quality to wear the number 7.

Clough, Smicer, Kewell and Keane were all sh*t in my opinion. For some reason people believe we can't dare criticise Vladi because of his goal in Istanbul (as well as the penalty) but the truth is he weren't good enough for the club. So the iconic number 7 has already been dragged through the mire in the past 25 years.

Lambert getting it, wouldn't hurt in my opinion because he isn't expected to be the world class player. Clough, Kewell and Keane all came with huge expectations. Smicer, not so big but still a fair bit. Lambert is expected to be a bit part, where if he can contribute 10 goals he's probably done well.

We've also got the #11 shirt available as well (assuming the Assaidi rumours are true). I think Sterling would suit that as well.

I'd leave the 7 jersey for a year and if Sterling has another stellar season and we haven't bought another big player worthy of it then give it to him.

As for the number 9 I'd like Studge to have it, he's earned it!
