Aurelio had the missing piece its called a brain why do so few players have it now.

The amount of times I shout "no foul" at my laptop or TV just for the player to go and do something stupid and give away a free kick.

Always felt Aurelio was a better left-back than Riise, shame he was another one made of glass!

Aurelio was F***ing quality, but he could never play more than three games in a row without breaking something. I honestly think he'd be considered a very good LB easily superior to Riise if he had ben able to stay fit for any period of time.

We haven't had a solid and dependable pure left back in a very long time.

Both had a hell of a free kick on them. Riise was sheer power and Aurelio was pin point precision. Moreno takes one and it ends up in the stand somewhere

basically you can't just drop Moreno for Smith because even if Smith was better what does that say to the world about Moreno? how will we get anything back on the young lad we paid so much for if we drop him for a reserve? yes that is filthy talk but that is the world game these days. it's like when people thought Ward should get a run for the last 10 Prem games - how do you sell Mignolet after that? everyone in the world can see our games, it's not like we can hide sh*t form. we have to be patient and play the game well to slowly upgrade each position, each backup to each position.

I think teams defend narrow against us and allow Clyne and Moreno to have plenty of the ball. He's a liability and i'm guessing provided very few assists and clear cut opportunities.

I agree. Also his running forward will create chances, the fact he forgets to run back is the main issue

doesn't surprise me at all, he likely has the lowest conversion rate of that bunch too. Teams want to give him that space cuz they know he will forget all about that other phenomenon called defending. It's like kidnapping by telling a child there is a lollipop for you down that alley.

Thing is he's created them chances but he's not created many key ones, the majority of them are probably half chances at best. How many has he cost against us though is what I'm more interested in given that first and foremost, he is a defender. There is no point playing in defence if you can't defend, effectively playing a winger there otherwise.

Spot on mate. Yep he may get forward but he constantly gets caught out on the counter and inevitably it's him that costs the turnover, leading to the counter in the first place.

Just out of interest, am I the only person on the forum who hopes this lad makes it here?

I only ask because he seems to be mentioned in a negative light in every thread bar the news stories one and I imagine it's only a matter of time before the lad joins isis and fucks up his planned suicide bombing.

For me, if he stays then it's because Jürgen thinks he should and I'll be fu**ed if I'm going to spend all season watching him to see if he makes a mistake so I can bi*ch about it and say told you so.

Seems to be the modus operandi of some.

I hope everybody we sign makes it here.

I'd love for him to make it here, because it sucks to have to keep replacing players.

But I think his defensive prowess is certainly questionable and up for debate.

His decision making is highly suspect and I'm just not sure Klopp can really help him with that knee jerk crap he does.

Nope... this is probably a failing on my behalf but like every other player we have ever signed, I hope the lad becomes a superstar.

It can be really hard at times but in my experience there's no point fretting or vexing myself or indeed getting angry over a player who's pulling on that Red shirt time and time again.

1: He doesn't pick himself... 2: Better men than me (including Jürgen) have rated him high enough to pick him... 3: My yammering and whining wouldn't make a button of difference anyhow.

Famous last words but I reckon he'll have a good season.  :couch:

      Bang on the money.

Posts like FL Reds above I think are a fair criticism but I read someone say 'he offers nothing going forward, he can't pass or cross and offers nothing defensively.' Just not true.

Would love him to make that level of cretin eat their own stupid words, just like Lucas did when he was going through this.

I'm sure we've all seen it but this was kind of the moment I realised theres not much down for Mereno as a defender.

I think most people associate the mistakes he makes with his positioning, and to be fair the majority of time they are right. He is always out of position from his very erratic understanding of how high he plays his football.

Here though you can see just the basic lack of defensive technique that he has. Getting himself too square on very early so that he can't move his feet anywhere near quickly enough to stay with his attacker.

In that clip when the attacker shoots the ball he is square on, looking away from the ball, with his hands tucked behind his back.

And this is a rare occasion where he is behind the ball and there should be little danger. A lot of the time he's already sold himself down the river in persuit of finally making a crossing assist.

A 300 page book could be written about every mistake the lad made and how he could do better just in that clip alone. The truth is there are many, many more examples out there.

I think he just has too much to learn and sadly for us and him, he lacks the basic instincts to ever pull it around.

The lad is a failed winger because of his poor output and for my money a failed left back because he lacks any natural understanding of that position.

I hope he proves me wrong if we go in to the new season with him again, but i'll have no issue with venting about it all should he (and we) continue to fail to learn from mistakes. Not because I want him to fail or because it will achieve anything, but because it's therapeutic to let it all out.

      I'm feeling better already.  :)

Haha :) and don't get me wrong I understand where you are coming from with people sticking the boot in to Alberto. I am sure (despite the man bun) he is a nice guy and it's not his fault that he is our best (only?) first team left back at the club. Though it would be nice if he showed us to some level of development in his game!

Even if he was the best left back the world had ever laid eyes on however, I would be finding it difficult to understand not having a second specialist left back at the club.

Just thinking about his undoubted  high energy game, then you can see there is every possibility injury or burnout could kick in with him, even if it will be a less hectic schedule for us this season.

Not to mention the fact I believe to get to where we need him to be, he would need to be pushed within an inch of his life with competition for places.

I keep banging the drum, but surely we can't be going into a campaign with just a very raw Moreno as the specialist in that position.

I know a lot of faith is placed in Kloppo and rightly F***ing so, but I would have hoped he/fsg wouldn't have sold Brad Smith if there really is nobody out there for us to sign.

Just my opinion, I think that, that is a mistake if we really are closed for business this Summer.

I just have this unnerving feeling looking at it from the outside if we don't get this position sorted, we are heading into a bit of a trap of our own making.

Just to add, I think it's F***ing brilliant that we're sat here with a full month left of the transfer window and the majority are basically just worried about getting a new left back.

      Well in Jürgen I say.

Quite right, i really do expect us to sign someone in that area, but the talk at the moment is that we might not which is a little worrying.

If we get a left back in then I can relax knowing we have a squad set for the season ahead.

I don't think we are getting a LB Ian, seems like the plan is to use Milner there as cover.
