Winger generally just refers to a wide attacking midfielder, regardless of type. That is where he plays. We have loads of good wide attacking midfielders.
As for good enough; he is nearly 23. If it were likely that striker would end up being his final position he'd probably be playing there already much more than he is. Also he's just come off a season just about identical to Borini's at Sunderland (he was the same age then too, playing mostly out wide). Volland is mostly a case of grass-is-greener elsewhere.

I interpret a winger as a player that is more prone to taking the ball out wide and crossing as well as staying out wide, where as an inside forward is more prone to moving infield with the ball or without, which is how Volland usually is when played out wide.

As for a season just about identical to Borini's at Sunderland, what do you mean? Volland is more involved in build up plays and a better footballer. I think he could eventually become a #9, but I like to see us play with inside forwards and I believe Volland would be good for us and adapt well to a fluid attacking line up.

I''l put semantics aside, as there isn't really a fixed definition of these words  :f_tongueincheek:
Very similar in terms of output to Borini. I agree that Volland is the better player, but at his age, if we are taking punts of potential, I typically expect a bit more. Also we are well stocked with good players who can play as inside forwards or wingers.

Edit: to clarify, if we are talking about just buying him as an extra to all the other options, sure why not, but if he is being mooted as a striker purchase (even if it were instead of Benteke) then I would not be happy. I do believe that Origi is just as good, but younger, and I haven't given up on Ibe, Marcovic or Lallana.

I guess it all depends on how Rodgers wants to set his team up. Though I do quite like the idea of Firmino as a false #9 with Volland/Sturridge and Ibe/Origi as inside forwards and Lallana as a #10.

well happy days so far we have new RB, a new defender a new attacking mid/forward a new no2 GK and an established midfielder and a new young striker all before the 1st of July. all we need is another striker and possibly a DM if we are not going to stick with lucas and allen as our DMids.

cant complain really not sure how much BR has had in these deals or if they have been Mike Gordon and committee signings but all of them i'm happy with tbh.
No2 GK i dont think we needed and could have just promoted u21 GK but for free i'm happy with. milner great deal and ings is a hot prospect i think if given a fair run out

Striker now and we can be done before the end of the week before pre-season. i think if we dont sign Benteke we wont sign a striker at all now.

I've got a feeling that Benteke and Illarra will be our last two signings. Then it will be down to shifting the likes of Enrique, Balo, Lambert, Borini, etc.

Overall, I'll be pretty happy with the way our squad looks once Studge is fit. On paper, it looks like we will have plenty of quality and depth in just about every position -- RB, LB and GK being the weakest in terms of quality depth.

Now we just have to hope that Brendan has the players he needs to get us competing for the league again!!  New season, new hope!! This is our year  :kop5cf8koxp6:

If we shift Enrique then we need another LB
If we sell Lucas then we need another DM
If we get rid of balotelli, lambert and borini then we need another striker.

If those moves are made then I will be very happy with this transfer window and feel far more positive than I did a month ago

No. He played only 12 games for Bordeaux, 9 games at Granada, so a grand total 21 games in 2 years for 2 mediocre teams. How can he be good enough for us ?

that's not the paradigm. i can say dumb stuff too George. "Sturridge is rotting away on Chelsea's bench, he can't come and score 50 goals for us!". millions of examples. Ilori is a kid that anyone with a brain knew would get AT LEAST two loans before being given a shot.

Mario Gomez?? offer them borini and ballotelli plus some cash mabye

Liverpool have registered their interest in completing the transfer of Fiorentina striker Mario Gomez this morning.
The Reds are in the market for a new striker and have become aware that the German international is available, according to Tuttomercatoweb.
Gomez is keen on a move away from Fiorentina after seeing his playing time limited.
The German striker only managed ten goals last season but has posed a consistent goal threat throughout his career.
He has scored an impressive 166 league goals in 308 appearances throughout his career.

I think Mario Gomez might be a little, just a little, bit faster than Lambert.

I wanted Gomez before he went to Fiorentina. No point now. The kind of transfer West Brom will do and probably get nothing out of.

      STOKE AGREE SHAQIRI FEE

According to Sky Italia sources, Stoke have agreed a £12million fee with Inter Milan for Xherdran Shaqiri.

It is now up to the player where his future lies, having spent just six months at the club. He signed on a four-and-a-half year deal for an undisclosed fee during the January transfer window

would this be worth a punt?? not a bad player for 12mil and if we are indeed losing sterling would be a great adidtion

If Inter are willing to get rid of him so quickly surely that indicates something isn't right?

      We're getting closer I think.

What a perfect midfield we have, with Can, Milner and Henderson, great in defense and creative at the same time (sarcasm mode on), basically a recipe for disaster when we'll be facing the likes of top 4, if not even teams like the Bitters and Swansea/Southampton.

If we don't get a quality midfielder, we'll be fu**ed over again.

Except that Milner and Henderson are creative, as evidence by their strong output (goals and assists) from midfield. There are more ways to be creative than being a strong dribbler. Can has shown decent potential in that regard when played in midfield but needs to show more to be considered creative.

Regarding defence, the thinking seems to be that playing three high energy players (who are each of varying but above average strength) reduces the need for a specialist DM, but I am not convinced.

We need a workhorse in the midfield area, capable of supporting our defence and not leave it exposed (like the past 2 seasons) and threading the ball to our more creative players. A Mascherano-type player. This is critical, in my opinion, for our chances of making the top 4. Imbula, Khedira or Kondogbia would have been perfect signings, too bad we didn't even try for them. Alternative options, and viable at the same time, are William Carvalho, Sven Bender, Lars Bender, Christoph Kramer, Radja Nainggolan, Idrissa Gueye, Nigel de Jong.

I agree we need a DM and most of the players you listed are very good and would likely be excellent transfers. Either of the Bender brothers (preferably Lars) would be my pick. Carvahlo is very good, but currently hyped beyond his ability (kind of like Sterling) and so would require a massive transfer fee. My only complaint was the mischaracterisation of Hendo and Milner as lacking creativity.
