      Set Pieces
      Feb 25, 2015 03:04:45 pm
We are poor from set pieces, particularly corners this season.
      Anyone any thoughts on why?

I don't understand it myself as the key protagonists that were taking set pieces (Gerrard,Hendo,Cou) and scoring from them (Skrtel, Hendo and Gerrard) are still here.
Obviously we've lost the brilliance of Suarez who scored some wonder free kicks but his loss doesn't explain why we're not a threat from corners
At this moment we have scored 3 goals from set pieces and 4 goals from pens (http://www.whoscored.com/Regions/252/Tournaments/2/Seasons/4311/Stages/9155/TeamStatistics/England-Premier-League-2014-2015)

Last year we scored 26 set piece goals and 10 pens. (http://www.whoscored.com/Regions/252/Tournaments/2/Seasons/3853/stages/7794/TeamStatistics/England-Premier-League-2013-2014)

Only thing I can think is BR has had to do so much work on integration, formation and defensive work that set piece routines have been pushed down the pecking order.

      Thoughts?

I see your point we are terrible at defending and attacking set pieces this seaon due to loss of Suarez and dip in form of Gerrard. Pens we can stick them away all day with Gerrard, ballotelli's record from the spot, but free kicks we only really have gerrard who can score them. Mario probably second if he's on the pitch but i would like to see us working in that front and have a 1st choice free kick taker but to mix it up a bit and start attacking the ball more from corners, free kicks.
Defending corners we look better with CAN,Sakho in the team as there both physical beasts but we still look suspect teams look to get corners against us as we are weak.

attacking set pieces will change next season without gerrard as no player will be able to stake a claim on them due to expericance but it might be a good thing as players like Coutinho,Henderson, sturridge might step up to the plate.

defending i think is our biggest worry and unless we get a few more physicall leaders in the team we will continue as we dont command the box, mignolet has chosen to punch the ball rather than collect which seems to be working but zonal dont work jsut attack the ball .

good point it has 100% improved us i think that's down to personnel along with formation since Can went there and Sakho came back we've been pretty solid at the back. question now then is do we think the issue was Lovern all along??

Lovren was partly at fault but biggest reason we improved was ditching Gerrard from DM and bringing back Lucas, now playing Allen as a defensive shield.

I think you underestimate how good Lucas is in that position mate, Can who no doubt talented is a complete novice and has a lot to learn still.

Lucas is a much better DM than Can. In fact Lucas has this season been the best DM in the league. For me, Can isn't a DM at all. He's a box to box player.

As for the topic; every team thinks that they are bad from corners. We have a bit more argument than most because we were excellent last season, but this season we've been pretty average. More or less goes to show what has always been known; corners are mostly luck.

We've also been pretty solid on defending them recently too. Its not a major worry.

The defensive side has been shored up since switching to the back 3. Having 3 brutes (Skrtel, Sakho, and Can) gives us a solid group of zonal markers. Also, Migs has been more confident and commanding of his area in recent weeks. I think the only set pieces goals we've conceded since we've made this switch to the back 3 were the 2 goals against Chelsea in the League Cup.

As far as our inability to score from set pieces, I put it down to not having a really good dead ball specialist. Stevie can  hit a decent direct free kick, but I haven't been particularly impressed with his service from corners in quite a while. It would be great for us to have someone who can consistently deliver dangerous balls from corners AND offers a good threat from direct free kicks.

i rate lucas in that role but never looks like he's going to pick out a clever pass or score, where i feel Can has that little edge over him with better vision for an attacking ball from the back. Lucas pre injury was finding form again but will he ever fully recover from this second injury only time will tell.

I think you're misinterpreting the role of the DM mate. The clue is in the 'D' :f_tongueincheek: They protect the defenders; they read, break-up and frustrate the opposing teams forward momentum. How often did you see Mascherano go marauding forward, pick out pin-point passes or score a hatful of goals? The key to that position is to keep things simple.

It would seem the better you are in that role, the less you hear or appreciate how good that player is.
