I managed to catch a few games this week but I got the timing wrong for the one game I was looking forward to most - Kansas vs Vancouver. I watched NYC vs DC, NY vs Toronto and Seattle vs Orlando. There were some top performances and the games in general were really good. Seattle looked back to their usual best with Martins upfront (despite his dreadful penalty) and Valdez getting his first goal for the Sounders. Hopefully now they start to pick up a few more points and make their way up towards the top of their conference. I think they've got a good chance of doing so going off their next 4 fixtures: RSL (A) - 9th, Portland (H) - 4th, Toronto (H) - 5th in East with only 1 win in last 5 and San Jose (A) - 8th.

I'm going to try and find highlights for the Kansas City match.

Sky Sports must be gutted. They've been bigging up a Gerrard vs Lampard encounter for the past week or so and Lampard doesn't even make the bench for NYC :D

Great 5-1 win for the Galaxy.
Stevie should have scored at least once.
Pirlo was majestic. Have to say it was a total joy to watch him.

The big takeaway from this weekend is how good LA looks. As much as I'd hate to see them win again, for the sake of Stevie I'd love it if they were able get him a league medal.

Another big one too is Toronto. They're sitting in a very good spot and might very well make their first playoff appearance in their history. They thrashed Orlando 5-0. Giovinco is brilliant.

Drogba got a hat-trick in his first start. It was a wild match too, Montreal 4-3 Chicago. Back and forth, back and forth, the whole time. Hugely questionable defending, but that was part of what made the match so entertaining.

The Fire have sacked their coaching staff! But the owner is still around, so it's only a half victory for us.

They've also brought in a general manager to help run the club.

Gio dos Santos is fantastic too!

Stevie with 2 goals and 3 assists in 10 matches. Not a terrible return.

Saw the LA game with Seattle the other day.  Take it Seattle play at the Seahawks stadium.  Pitch marked up for American football, astroturf - it looked a real dog's dinner and the quality of the football suffered because of it.

      #SeattleInvented American football lines

Seriously, though, yeah it's a very ugly look and a crap surface to play on. The bizarre thing is they won't build their own stadium, having recently signed a contract to stay at CenturyLink Field until 2028 or so. Seattle has a large enough fan base to build their own stadium (with actual grass FFS) and sell out every match a la Kansas City.

Giovinco is unreal - he is worth the ticket alone! 22 goals this season if I am not mistaken. Should be player of the year quite easily - or is anyone anywhere near his level in the league?

And 15 assists. Giovinco is hands-down the most talented player in the league. He's unreal. Toronto qualified for the playoffs for the first time in their history too, which is very exciting for them.

The only competition the Atomic Ant has is Kei Kamara, who also has 22 goals but only 8 assists. He's been brilliant for Columbus, though.

Just been looking at the current standings, why are the away forms of every team so bad? Normally in every league you get one or two teams that have really good away form but they're all terrible in the MLS.

LA Galaxy has just 2 away wins from 16 games.  FC Dallas just 4 wins from 16 games.  NYRB just 5 wins from 16 games. Then you have Chicago Fire with 0 wins, 11 losses and 5 draws :D

Yeah, it's something I've been harping on about the league. Distinct lack of quality is one big reason, and travel is another. Teams are allowed only a handful of chartered flights, so they mostly fly coach like regular people. They stay in pretty low quality hotels too.

Couple of notes from this weekend:

-Dallas clinched the No. 1 spot in the Western Conference but are level with New York Red Bulls for the Supporters Shield (regular season champ, basically). RBNY will be at Chicago, Dallas is hosting San Jose.

-Speaking of the Fire, Chicago did not win a single road game this season. 0-12-5, meaning they've only picked up 5 road points from a possible 51. Oh, to have relegation in MLS.

Some embarrassing penalties in the game between Portland and Kansas City. The worst was the most pathetic attempt at a panenka that went a yard over the bar :D

Earlier in the season Seattle were painful to watch when Dempsey and Martins weren't available. Since they've been back Seattle have managed to not only get themselves into the play-offs but they also beat LA Galaxy (last year's MLS Cup winners) and also come from behind to beat FC Dallas 2-1.

FC Dallas have some very pacey attacking players but they struggled to create many clear cut chances in this game. It looked like Seattle may lose at one point because they struggled to get shots off but a mishap in the Dallas midfield meant that Ivanschitz could make his way to the edge of the box before shooting across goal into the bottom corner. The game was wrapped up when Dempsey scored a great free kick into the top corner (the keeper's dive looked hilarious) with only a handful of minutes remaining.
