      I don't think we should retire No.8.  7

Goes without saying he's a legend, we don't need to retire a shirt number to remember that.
There's been enough sentimental nonsense around LFC about Stevie, and it probably ended up costing us CL football.

Let's get over it and get on with the job of finding other players of his quality and commitment who are fit and proud to wear the shirt, whatever the number on the back...

As long as the player performs then I couldn't give a damn what number they are.

Retiring shirts is one token of sentiment too far so of course we shouldn't retire it.

Don't need to read through the posts to know that it's a resounding no to the question.
We've had so any legends we'd have to retire all the numbers.
Leave all the numbers, and let them inspire a new generation of legends.

Retiring shirt numbers seems to be an American thing so probably best to stay away from that sort of thing if only for that reason.

No. What works for American sport (NBA, NHL, NFL, MLB etc.) may not work in Europe. There'll be no end, like keep 23 for Carra's kid or something similar, come on...

Of course we shouldn't retire the shirt, but we should hold allocating 7, 8, 9 until we sign players that can fill the boots of the legends that donned them before.
Call me sentimental but Lambert as number 9 did not bode well at the start of last season.

Perhaps we should have a poll?

Then we could all argue about how accurate it really was and whether people are just knee-jerking.

I mean at the end of the day - it's not like the jersey gets a say in who wears it is it?

Yep ... it should be retired. Its Stevie's shirt and when he comes back we can unretire it.

I am definitely against the idea if an Italian club has done it then good it was their idea at the time fair enough.  We haven't done it in the past for the King.  Or for Phil Neal, who has won more trophies than most clubs in this country.  We have had too many legends and for that it would be disrespectful to the legends of the past.  Gerrard is definitely one of the greatest of all time, but he has had a lot reward and will get his appreciations from the fans.  Retiring a shirt won't add anything other than undermining a huge list of players.  Like mentioned we would have to start in the 30s.

Players like Gerrard make that No.8 more special.  I do care a little about numbers, because it reminds me of past greats like before Gerrard it was Souness that I connected with the no.8,  now I will remember to huge players both the best of their generations.   Obviously this is in my time surely, the older posters will have other names too.

There is no need for any poll, the thing is clear,99% of the LFC fans is not for retiring of the number 8 jersey.
