      Pre-season 2015-16
      Jun 20, 2015 09:03:23 pm
just had a look at our pre season schedule. Thailand, Malaysia couple of Aussie clubs and HJK.

I know pre season is about getting the fitness back and working on tactics and what not but surely we should be playing tougher games then that to sharpen us up? In my humble opinion we'd get more out of games against the likes of forest Leeds Derby etc.

Has pre season now become a money making scheme? Head to the states, Asia sell shirts and push the brand, ridiculous word to use in relation to football. I know the flip side is there's thousands of fans out there and it's a great thing for them but are we leaving ourselves short in relation to having tougher games to sharpen us up?

Brian I think it is definitely a money making gimmick, the pre season tour last season did not do us any good at all. I would prefer to see most of the games played closer to home against stronger teams .

Couldn't agree more Billy, certainly the end of the pre-season should have at least a little emphasis on gathering information about our lads rather than it all being dedicated to commercial gain.

Travelling is part of pre-season now, we just have to accept that. There's still no excuse for that joke of a fixture list though. All the other top teams in the league have some tough games but for some reason we don't have a single one.

In terms of playing tougher games to have us better prepared for the season, I don't think it really makes much of a difference.
If we were to play Barca, Madrid, and Munich, and lose those games, it would hardly fill us with confidence for the coming season, just like hammering lower division teams wouldn't give us too much of a big head.
As long as Brendan gets what he needs in terms of fitness, and gets to try out tactics and formations using different players, it will be worth while.
Of course it's about "promoting the brand" as far as the money men are concerned, but that's the way it works these days for clubs fighting for fan base.

Last year's pre-season saw us play both Manchester clubs, Roma, Milan, Olympiakos and Dortmund (managed by Klopp who got tore apart by Brendan but that's another debate). And we finished 6th.

The year before we played Olympiakos, Celtic and more less a bunch of nobodies. We finished 2nd.

Need to flog jersey's to them that have some cash to spend. If there was a rich outpost on the moon, we'd be off there too. Not just us though, the big brand clubs will all be at something similar.

Agree won't get us sharp, we'll just have to rely on the extra quality injected by our new quality first XI summer signings to edge those first few games till 'sharpness' returns...

      Is that all?

I thought with all the fuss on here we had far more games than that.

So by the 25th July were back at Melwood then and only the HJK game?

Aye, only the 4 games in Asia, then 1 in norway. Not bad at all.

I'll be at the game in my town Adelaide at my team Port Adelaide's home ground! :D

Just in case anyone missed it, the reason we aren't playing a traditional curtain raiser against a big team (past few years = Dortmund, Leverkusen.. Atletico?) is because Anfield will still be undergoing refurbishments around this time - the same reason we asked to start the season away from home.

At least we have no Europa qualifiers! Phew.

pre season is mainly a fitness thing but still we want to do what we did last season as we was impressive in pre-season. We want to win every game, cant wait to see the new signings and how they will fit in,
