Tributes pour in to decorated midfielder who also served club in Football in the Community roleFormer Liverpool player Brian Hall has died.
Tributes have been pouring in for the 68-year-old who was diagnosed with leukaemia several years ago but appeared to have been winning his battle with the illness.
Glasgow-born Hall played 224 games for the Reds between 1969-76 and scored 21 goals, winning two League Championships, an FA Cup and two UEFA Cup winnersâ medals.
His first goal for the club secured him a place in Merseyside folklore, being the winner in the 1971 FA Cup semi-final against Everton at Old Trafford, Manchester.
He was something of a novelty in football circles given that he was a university graduate having come to Liverpool as a teenager to study for a degree in mathematics.
He was affectionately nicknamed 'Little Bamber' - in conjunction with fellow university graduate and Liverpool midfielder Steve Heighway, who became known as Big Bamber - after Bamber Gascoigne, host of the popular television show, University Challenge.
Hall later served the club for many years as Football in the Community Officer.
John Aldridge, chairman of the Liverpool Former Players Association, said: âBrian Hall passed away today, itâs very sad news for all Liverpool fans.
âWhat a gentleman and a lovely man. Our thoughts are with his family. Youâll never walk alone Brian.â
Didi Hamann Tweeted: âVery sad to hear that Brian Hall passed away. A gentleman and a big part of the LFC family. He wonât be forgotten.â
Club statistician Ged Rea said: âSad to hear of the passing of Brian Hall. A very articulate, knowledgeable and down to earth man with a lovely sense of humour.â
Former Liverpool manager Roy Evans said: âOne of the good guys has sadly passed away. Deepest sympathy to Mary and the family.â
A statement from the Liverpool FC Official Supporters Club Merseyside branch read: âCommittee members are very sorry to hear of the passing of Brian Hall, known as âBamberâ due to his academical achievements - rare amongst footballers!
âBrian was always very supportive of our branch, letting us use his office in the attic of the building opposite the Anfield Road stand on a Friday teatime.
âHe attended our last branch dinner and seemed to be winning his battle, but sadly it was too great a hurdle to overcome this time. Thanks Brian. YNWA May you rest in peace.â
