Thanks for putting the work in for this but the problem is that it doesn't tell you the squad value - only a snapshot at the time the player was sold.

For example, Rafa spent 5 million on "his" account buying Sterling who proves to be an incredible buy - when he is sold for 50 million the 45m difference is used to make Rodger's figures better rather than Rafa's.

What would Rafa's net spend be if he had sold Torres, Masch, Agger and Reina the day before he left?

It would be in the Minus no doubt, but then again Rafa's spend is helped along by Houlliers Purchases that he sold, not to the degree that Rodgers has been helped along by the sale of Sterling and Suarez two players he inherited.

One thing you can take from the spend of both Managers, is that within 4 seasons Rafa had us as the one of the most feared teams in Europe, obviously at the time Rafa only really had Arsenal, Chelsea and United to compete with for top 4, City came along towards the end of his tenure, but you could argue that United have gotten considerably weaker in the period Rodgers has been Manager.

Exactly - that's why totting up simple transfers in/out is so limited in terms of analysis.

Plus there's the question of factoring in inflation from TV deal money etc.

Paul Tomkins has done a lot of work in this area to come up with comparative transfer spends - it becomes quite complicated if you look at it seriously.

I don't doubt what you are saying, was just putting the figures as people had brought it up in a few threads.

You can still work out roughly the inflation to give you an idea of the impact the certain player had on the squad and if the money was a good investment.

Say for example your £9m Dirk Kuyt is your modern day £20m Markovic., Your £5.8m Agger is your £15m Sakho etc

Suarez was a strong Rafa target we were on the verge of signing (Rafa's first job for Kenny when he brought him back to the club was to ask him to provide additional scouting reports on Suarez)

Sterling was a Rafa buy for the future who was a spectacular success.

Coutinho - who Rafa called "the future of the club" when he was managing Inter was recommended to LFC by Rafa.

Sturridge was sold to us by Rafa when he was managing Chelsea even though Brendan was trying to scupper the deal to bring in Clint Dempsey.

Transfer spends are only half the story - and they don't even include wages which often end up costing more than the transfer fee.

So yes - thanks for putting up the figures - I just wanted to point out to people that the reality is even stronger in Rafa's favour in terms of his dealings for the club.

It would be interesting to compare how many players bought and sold by each manager actually saw an increase in their value - I'm struggling to think of many of Brendan's signings that would.

Very interesting thread  - however I would say two points:

Rafa is a lot better manager than Rogers
Kuyt is a lot better then Lazar

You can talk about Houllier and his squad helping sales values and the sh*te hawk yanks we have had owning the club under his tenure. But the fact remains, he is managing Real Madrid now and is miles better than Rogers.

If he was here today I doubt we would all be at the very bitter end of a 0-3 result against West Ham.

Yep you could but again it's more complicated - that gives you the value of monetary inflation but not the inflation related to spending power.

For example, now that even the like of Bournemouth are getting tens of millions through the improved TV deal, what is their relative spending power to us?

Maybe only five clubs could have afforded a Dirk Kuyt at the time we bought him whereas maybe ten clubs could do the same now as foreign clubs haven't had the same uplift in TV money.

That means our relative spending power has gone down domestically even though we have more money to spend.

It does indeed and he has done some fantastic work (Tomkins).

The problem with squad value is that until it becomes fact (sold) it's far too subjective. I do believe that most would admit Brendan has inherited a tremendous advantage in terms of saleable assets. Suarez and Sterling are near as damn it the two most expensive sales we've managed, how it works out when inflation is factored in I'm not sure but they wont be too far away from being 1 and 3 would be my guess.

So not only has he had FSG's restricted investment but he's had a serious advantage over previous managers with what he's had to spend. We can argue net spends all day long, Kenny was bemoaned terribly for his transfers but actually made the club money, the way Brendan is going I would find it difficult to believe we've had anyone worse.

If I remember rightly it was Segura who heavily scouted Suarez and recommended him, same as he recommended Raul Meireles to Roy Hodgson.

It was factoring in inflation, not their talent, £9m in 2006 is probably roughly around the £20m mark in 2015 in terms of how transfer fee's have been inflated.

I'm not sure you can do a true comparison due to inflation etc but also I believe the brief for both Managers has been completely different.  Rafa was building a squad to compete at the very highest level whereas Brendan has had to reduce the wage bill and lower the age bracket, at the same time as trying to compete.

It was always a longer term project for Brendan but it seems that in having a longer plan, we've lost sight of the end goal as nobody knows what time frame to put on developing a very young squad.  We have some very good young players, some excellent ones and some that we're still unsure about.  We've spent so much money on buying all and any young talent with no real plan on when, how or if they'll eventually strengthen the squad and because we're now in a situation where fans are losing patience/have lost patience, we might never even get to see some of them flourish.

At some stage the focus of the plan has to change if we're ever to be successful again, let's hope those at the top realise that winning is the best way to bring them the success they crave for their investment.

I think the best way to give it an honest assessment is to double Rafa's net spend to £156,680,00 to factor in inflation brought about by TV money etc and compare it to Rodgers £104,350,000.

Now Consider Rafa had another two years tenure on Rodgers, so say £25m net for two seasons on Rodgers tally would bring it to 154,350,000 which is very, very close to Rafa's figures.

As a few have said Debs Tompkins work on the value of players taking into account 'football inflation' makes it a lot easier to do.

If we used that I would think Rafa's figures in Blood's OP would be a lot higher.

Regardless of what has been spent by either of them, Rafa won more trophies in two seasons than we've even come close to winning under Brendan.

That matters more than who's wasted the most money.

      It does.

You don't happen to have Rafa's squad after 3 seasons, going into his fourth, as comparison Day?

I think if we lined up those two squads it could give an idea of which one we think is stronger and how well resources had been used.
