Steven Gerrard joins Liverpool all-stars team in exhibition against Socceroos legends

EIGHT months after he last pulled on a Liverpool shirt, Steven Gerrard is to don the Premier League giants’ kit once again — in Sydney.

The man who made the third highest number of appearances for the Merseyside club is to headline a Liverpool all-stars team to play at ANZ Stadium in January, taking on a Socceroos select XI.

The Liverpool side will also include Jamie Carragher, Luis Garcia, Dietmar Hamann, Ian Rush, Danny Murphy and John Aldridge, with Gerard Houllier signed up to “coach” them.

The Socceroos side will include Mark Bosnich, Brett Emerton, Scott Chipperfield, Tony Popovic, Jason Culina, Mile Sterjovski and Ned Zelic. Intriguingly, pundits and bitter rivals Craig Foster and Robbie Slater will be on the same side.

It’s believed a former Socceroos boss has been approached to be in charge of the team, in a fixture the NSW Government hopes will tap into the extraordinary fanbase Liverpool has in Australia.

The club’s current first team has made two forays here, playing Melbourne Victory in 2013 in front of a packed MCG, and touring in Brisbane and Adelaide last July.

Rushie is surprisingly agile for an old bloke! He was running around like he was still playing.

Luis Garcia produced some brilliant touches, Riise was awesome and he waved to us every time we sung his song.
