Will Milner be dropped or pushed wide now that Hendo is back?

Cant see Klopp dropping Lucas and/or Can

In all honesty I can't answer that but it's a situation I welcome. Two committed and very professional players possibly competing for the one place?

Henderson would get the nod from me, though.

There is a third option you haven't listed in your "What happens to Milner question", it's nothing. Milner has been playing as one of the three in behind the striker mostly, usually left or right. Unless Henderson decides to develop a new side to his game, my guess he (Milner) will carry on doing what he has been doing all along, namely playing in every match that he is fit for and not suspended.

I think he'll be pushed wide and that's a problem (for him anyway).  Part of him joining was clearly that he preferred being in the centre - he was coming in to replace Gerrard remember.

But with Can, Lucas, Henderson and even Allen available for the centre I think Milner and Ibe would be better fighting over another position.  Let's see which of them provides the most goals/assists and take it from there.

      He's vice-captain so I'm sure he'll do whatever's in the teams interests.  :f_whistle:

Milner and Hendo similar type of players but Hendo is the better player in his passing, shooting and runs into the box.

He becomes the vice captain again  ;D :P

On a serious note, I think for the first time, we have 5 fully fit CMs available - Hendo, Milner, Lucas, Can and Allen. But looks Milner will take up the "right-sided midfielder" role a lot henceforth.

Hendo back gives us even more option's and you could see Can getting a break in as games and Hendo playing with Milner and Lucas but I think more often than not Hendo, Lucas and Can will be the midfield three and James will find himself battling with Ibe and Lallana for a place in the front three.

      Good problems to have.

He's a squad player, same as every other member of the squad, some will start, some will be on the bench, some will be left at home.  They can't all play but they all have a part to play.

We have a massive squad when everyone's fit and available, nobody is guaranteed a starting berth.  For once we have real competition for places apart from at fb and gk.

Given how untimely his tackles are, it's just a matter of time Milner get 5 yellows and get suspended... :P :lmao:

I had him down as being our most card happy person as well.

Yeah he's already had 6 in all comps but he's only 5th on our list (based on minutes played per card).

Lucas, Gomez, Toure and ... Allen ahead of him.

Milner has unspectacularly earned his place in our midfield for the moment, no matter what people's opinion of him is.

For me, Hendo will have to earn his place in the starting XI by showing his quality in the minutes he gets as he returns to full fitness. No automatic selections in Klopp's team methinks, captain or not.

While I agree Hendo will have to earn his place I don't think it'll be that long before he has done so.

Hmm...I imagine we'll see Henderson,Lucas and Milner to start and we may see Milner pushed ahead and Lallana, Ibe or Firmino and Can stepping into the centre at times. Time will tell I suppose. Good headache to have.

Milner will be a very good option. We have a lot of games to play this season and Henderson can't play them all.

Milner is much better out wide, it highlights strengths and covers his weaknesses much better than when in the middle.

He's not a proficient tackler but is excellent at closing down and putting in the miles, also he's happy to lead the charge on a break-away both conducive to playing out wide. He also supplies a decent cross compared to not that great interplay when in tight situations, again benefits from playing out wide.

While he puts in the miles he's nowhere near as quick as Hendo who can actually recover on people, neither are the best in a 1v1 challenge but I feel Hendo is actually the stronger defensive player. Hendo is much better at passing along the floor and in tight areas, he's also more composed on the ball without feeling the need to 'try' something that generally doesn't work too well for Milner.

I'd also prefer Hendo coming on to a shot on the edge of the box, Milner has scored some crackers in the past but what we've seen for us is pretty much consistently blazing them over. I really hope Klopp does a number on Henderson's confidence because if he can eliminate the self doubts then Hendo has the technical ability to be a brilliant edge of the box player for now though he's his worst enemy in that regard.

Having said all that it's pretty much without question that Henderson should be our dead ball specialist for now, even corners, in that case Milner will have to swap with Hendo because with Jordan out our dead ball situations have been liabilities in the most part.

So what happens to Milner is he gets shoved out wide and deals with it.

They're different players who can play different positions, so I don't think any of them will be pushed out. Milner can still come in handy every now and then, let's not forget that we have a lot of games to play this season, it's good to have different options, and Milner is a a good one, we can play him to keep Hendo fresh.

Oh yeah I really forgot that was an option, when we don't have Henderson or want to rest him we can use Milner the same way as we've been using him all the time Henderson has been out.

      Insightful that....  :P

The clear focus of the topic is what happens to Milner if both are readily available for selection without needing to rest either, who moves to accommodate the other, or indeed is one dropped?

I've already answered that question mate.
Like I said before, I don't think any of them will be left out because:
1 - they're different players who can play different positions, so Klopp might decide to play 'em both
2 - there are many games to play so Klopp can play Milner to keep Henderson fresh and vice versa.

If the '' clear focus of the topic '' is: who will be left out if they're competing for the same position? I think Milner would be left out if that was the case, but again, who says they have to play the same position?

My only concern right now is that if we are playing them both in the starting 11, that probably means pushing Milner to wide.
I am not going to the extent to say that we should sign Reus, etc but I think Milner is the stop-gap solution, we need a permanent solution.

We have miss the pace of Sterling in wide area (yes, Ibe is doing well at the moment but he lacks penetration and/or directness that Sterling and/or a proper wide player offers, something again Milner will not offer in long term). What Milner does offer is the great workrate. At this moment, he is also someone who can cross better from the flanks than the rest.

With the number of games coming up, I think it is great for us to have so many good options.  Everyone will play their part in the next few weeks.
