Are there any 'TOP TOP' managers Left?
      Feb 07, 2016 06:49:07 pm
After the mancs sack Van Gaal and get Jose. (presumably)

      and After Citeh get Pep.

If there is another round of sackings at the top clubs in football. It seems theres going to be Slim pickings for the so called big teams if they are in need of replacements.

After Simone, who is out there with real pedigree, experience and trophies who hasnt been tried multiple times and sacked?

Will footballs managerial merry-go-round come back to bite itself ?

For me the game has changed significantly. The resources have all ended up in the hands of a few clubs which win everything. The manager is more or less a PR exercise. Mourinho, Ancellotti, Pep they all grab press but do they make a difference to these top teams really.

But Rafa has already done the rounds at top clubs. He's one of the established names at this point.

But when he was coming out of Valencia he was an up & coming manager with Trophies behind him.

There aren't many 2004 Rafa equivalents in football today. Aside from Simone, whos the new kid on the block?

      Ah right, my mistake.

Unai Emery at Sevilla is a good shout. I really rate Mauricio Pochettino as well, but he'll need to win a trophy to get more attention.

I think Simeone will go to Chelsea.

Conte is a very good manager who i think will leave Italy after the Euros.

Also Frank de Boer and Unai Emery are very good too.

Isn't Vizzy Montella doing alright? He was doing well at Fiorientina before they were morons and sacked him.

I'd also expect to see Aitor Karanka and Frank De Bour at 'bigger' clubs soon. Was also thinking about people like Jürgen Low who have managing international teams for years that could be brought into the club scene.

Spending the money doesn't always work though, neither does having the players. You still need to know how to set up your team, how to stop opponents, what the other teams are going to do, how to get the best out of your players and play to their strengths.

I don't know about you Mags but I've always seen Low as a facilitator of what has happened in German football as opposed to chief engineer of the whole business. I'm not sure whether that view is just or unjust. I think he's almost seen in an Aime Jacquet type light - someone who was part of a process where strategy and success was built above and beyond the manager's office. I think that's essentially what international management and indeed international football boils down to - the system supersedes any individual unlike as opposed to the more contained environment at club level. Because of that successful international managers never quite get the acclamation compared to their club managing counterparts.

Have to give Rafa  credit today.

He  has decided to drop with his team into the second tier and accept a challenge to bring them back up.
Perhaps the dysfunctional bar codes have seen the error of their ways.

I don't think any of them would be looking to change managers any time soon except maybe Arsenal if they don't win something soon.

Ancelotti a journeyman? Mate, I wouldn't mind being a journeyman with his CV!

When did 'top top' become a thing?

Wasn't it when Ferguson used it to insult Gerrard?

Always think it's irritating when Liverpool fans use an expression that was designed to insult our best player of the last thirty years.

Thing about Zidanes and Guardiola is they've not really built a team. They've come into teams already succesful and continued it.

Doubt either would have won the league with Leicester.

The level of managers in the Premiership is at an all time high.  Apart from Ancelloti and Simone we've got the lot.  Even the Championship have a manager that has a few European winning medals  a CV glittered with medals.  The standard here is absolutely massive.

I think it was a daft thing to say.  And when it came out nobody agreed with him outside utd fans, great players came out to prove Gerrard was a great player.  Even the likes of Ziza got involved. When someone gets caught being bitter and daft sometimes using that expression is indirectly taking the piss out of him instead of going on with his expression.

Anyways after retiring he in my opinion made the biggest contribution of flushing utd down the toilet.  So for that I will say Moyes was a top top manager to push them down the man hole.

I think money has skewed everything. Only a few teams can win the CL now. I think Leicester winning is great but its not the norm; its a statistical anomaly. Managers of the Madrid's and Bayern's etc are they great tactically? do they need to be. Personally I don't believe a manager like Ancellotti has innovated or changed the game. He has just been at the big end of town, winning with teams who will win anyway. He inevitably gets sacked because he doesn't plan for the future, he takes it easy on players. However, he would argue his job is to win and if he lets the players relax then they can do their job. He might also argue that the clubs who hire him have large turnovers in staff and so building a dynasty isn't part of the plan for a coach, who will not last more than 2-3 years irrespective.

You could argue Guardiola and Mourinho fit into this category. Although Guardiola innovated in Barcelona, was that him or was he the product of Cruyff's dream. Look at Guardiola, Zidane and Enrique all 3 have won the CL with either Barca or Real  in their first season in charge. Barca and Real have won 5 of the last 8 CL's. What do the managers do now anyway? I like the way Simeone has created an attitude at Atletico and can compete but even at their peak they haven't won the CL and won 1 league. I suppose the question is how can you tell if someones a top manager without it just reverting to the money argument.

Oh Rafa and Klopp are top managers!

I think it was a daft thing to say.  And when it came out nobody agreed with him outside utd fans

It's not just Ferguson who used the phrase, it's become the phrase of the very thick footballer.

Merson, Dowie and Redknapp are just three of the dopes I've heard use it.
