Wouldn't surprise me if he's on the bench at weekend.

You were right - he was.

So, who would he potentially come in for - Lovren or Klavan?   Possibly Lovren ... it'd be a close call.

Or maybe bring in Matip and move Klavan over to Moreno's spot.

Class act looks like we got a £25M defender for free.

Him and Sakho would we a beast of a CB formation, hopefully Jürgen can forgive Sakho with his misdemeanours.

Ridiculous that we got him for free. Wondering how he wasn't picked up by Bayern and the likes.

But we got him for free and we haven't really spent any money this summer so therefore he must be a mediocre signing at best, especially since nobody else tried signing him on a free, other teams weren't snapping at his heels to get him...just a few of the comments a few people on here were repeatedly going on about throughout the summer.

Every thing he did was excellent except for that missed tackle for the Vardy chance that Mignolet saved.

His distribution was awesome and when Migs flapped at a cross, Matip read it and dropped back to the goal line to cover the goal. Small things that could make the all the difference.

      Strong as F**k, too.

An obvious improvement on our shaky defence. I can see him forming a fantastic partnership with Sakho ... if Mama shows desire and heart, and applies himself in training and listens to Klopp.

Bundesliga transfers can be weird sometimes. Transfer fees are almost never stupidly inflated, players move on frees a lot, etc. Completely different market (that we should be dipping into more!).

It's a really really simple premise, but the fact we have a German as a manager is a massive massive benefit, as he has a natural inclination and in depth knowledge towards quality players.

If Rafa hadn't been Spanish - no matter what his tactical expertise was - we may not have bought the likes of Garcia and Alonso in 2004, and therefore never have won the Champions League. Likewise, for all Wenger's forward thinking strategies in 1996, it would be hard to imagine him having the success if he weren't French and had a deep knowledge of the great talent that he brought to Arsenal from France.

Jürgen being a German is a real blessing - something which the likes of Rodgers didn't have, whose natural inclination was towards British players as that was where his knowledge lay - like most British managers. As we all know the state of the national game, there lacks any real top talent within this country, and that really hinders managers depth of knowledge towards players in my opinion.

The lack of any real coaching experience abroad for many British managers hinders the ability to open their eyes to top talent.  Such is the 'island mentality' of many of them, it secludes exposure to finer, more sophisticated footballing nations. Praise to Rodgers who sought out coaching ideas abroad (the sort of which must be implemented at youth levels to make our home grown players much more technically sophisticated), but a residing bias towards British players may have resulted in an incompatibility with worthy coaching credentials with players unworthy of playing at the ultimate top top level under such ideals. For a British coach, perhaps both facets of management (coaching and player market knowledge) have to have maximum exposure to the different ideas and cultures from abroad to maximise ability.

Agreed. Doesn't give you the same nerves like Sakho and Lovren. Just gets on with it.

First name on the team sheet already.

Really good tonight, big guy, wins headers, gets the foot in for timely tackles, and comfortable with ball at feet. Complements Lovren well. Just need a clean sheet now as a reward :)

LOVE this guy at centre back. When teams go and spend 47m on Stones & 30m on Luiz, Matip is such a steal on a free.

He's been great. He's what Sakho is supposed to be. Reads the game weol, hard in the tackle and comfortable on the ball.

Just needs a few clean sheets behind him now.

What a boss. Only blemish was sliding in for a challenge on Matic i think it was leading to their goal.

Had Costa in his pocket, his passing and positioning is exemplary and he doesn't lose anything in the air.

I absolutely love his passing, not so much the range or precision (not calling him Xabi yet) but the conviction. He absolutely leathers the ball and trusts whoever is receiving to control it.

Has slotted in with ease so far. Don't want to start calling him the best around at all or anything like that but he certainly looks the business so far.

I've been impressed so far with his calmness, both on the ball and in the tackle (Chelsea away for their goal aside - that was rash and unnecessary given the location). A great base to build upon, and here's hoping for his first clean sheet this weekend at home to Hull.

Admittedly I may be missing some CBs, but I can't think of any in the EPL that I'd swap him for right now. Find myself very confident that he'll take the other team's striker right out of the game.
