      European Qualification - The possibilities

How Liverpool can qualify for Europe - and how they might not

      BY JAMES PEARCE

Jürgen Klopp described it as “all or nothing”. The stakes are high as Liverpool enter the final week of a gruelling campaign.

The Reds could lift the club’s first European trophy for 11 years and secure their passage into the group stage of next season’s Champions League.

They might instead have to settle for the consolation of a Europa League spot. And they could yet end up outside of Europe altogether.

Here all the possible permutations are explained.

What happens if Liverpool win the Europa League final against Sevilla?
Triumph in Basel next Wednesday night and Klopp’s men will get a golden ticket into the group stage of the 2016/17 Champions League.

UEFA rules state that the Europa League winners will be entered at a minimum level of the play-off round.

But as both Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, this season’s Champions League finalists, have already qualified for next season’s competition via their position in La Liga, it means whoever wins the Europa League will be elevated into the group stage.

If Liverpool win the Europa League there will five English clubs in the Champions League next season.

Leicester City, Tottenham and Arsenal are already qualified, while the battle for fourth spot between Manchester City and Manchester United will be decided on Sunday.

What happens if Liverpool are beaten in the Europa League final?

Lose in Basel and the Reds’ involvement in Europe next season will be determined by their finishing position in the Premier League.

With Chelsea at home tonight followed by West Brom away on Sunday, Liverpool could still finish as high as fifth if they win both and other results go their way.

Each place in the Premier League is worth around an extra £1.2million in prize money. Regardless of what happens, Liverpool can’t finish any lower than their current placing of eighth.

What will fifth place earn Liverpool?

If the Reds clamber over Southampton, West Ham and United they will qualify for the group stage of next season’s Europa League which starts on September 15.

      How about sixth?

Sixth place does offer European qualification. Manchester City earned one of England’s three Europa League spots when they beat the Reds on penalties in the League Cup final at Wembley in February. But with City guaranteed a top-five finish it’s been passed down to sixth.

Finish sixth and Liverpool will qualify for the Europa League. Whether they go straight into the group stage or the third qualifying round would depend on whether Manchester United or Crystal Palace win the FA Cup final.

That would have ramifications for Liverpool’s pre-season tour of America.

The Reds are taking part in the International Champions Cup this summer.

Liverpool face Chelsea in Pasadena on July 27 before taking on AC Milan in Santa Clara three days later.

Those showpiece friendlies could be sandwiched by a Europa League qualifying tie. The first leg is scheduled to take place on July 28 – less than 24 hours after the game against Chelsea.

Contingency plans have already been drawn up with Liverpool adamant that all fixtures would be fulfilled. Klopp would split his squad – with half staying in America to face Chelsea while the other half return to Europe before rejoining the tour.

Liverpool will face Chelsea in Pasadena's Rose Bowl in July

      How about finishing seventh?

That will only provide a route into Europe for Liverpool if United win the FA Cup final and finish inside the top six.

If the Reds qualify by claiming seventh spot then they are certain to go into the Europa League third qualifying round – meaning their next European campaign would start in July.

      How about eighth?

No chance. If Liverpool lose the Europa League final and don’t climb any higher than their current position domestically then they won’t have European football next season.

So win in Basel, Champions League, back to where we belong

Failure to get more points then Southampton (& possibly West Ham) then 8th and a season of no European football

We NEED to win on Wednesday .... but no European football could be a blessing and launch a title bid, free of extra games, like 2 seasons ago and like Leicester have just pulled off....

Very much my feeling.  The Europa League has been great this season - well the knockouts have been but it would be a huge kick in the nuts to go all the way back to Qualifying in July after losing a final.

My fear is that Southampton and West Ham might think similar about the early qualifying, we will have some unusual results o Sunday and we will somehow end up in it.

      Win the final.

I'll make a positive out of whatever happens :D so I just hope we win Wednesday and I don't have to delude myself in to thinking 8th and a runner up medal in the EL is ok.

      Win the final.

Give me a qualifier in July over a 11-sub second half, half bothered kickabout, across the other side of the world.

We need European football. If we're not good enough for the European Cup, we have to be in the UEFA Cup. If that means a qualifier in July, so be it. I would treat it as seriously as the final next week.

Liverpool & West Ham could face Europa League play-off

West Ham and Liverpool could face a play-off to determine who qualifies for the Europa League.

The Hammers lie sixth in the Premier League before the final round of matches, while Liverpool are eighth.

The Reds also play Sevilla in the Europa League final knowing that a win would secure a Champions League place.

If they have to qualify for Europe through the league, there is a scenario that has both clubs level on points, goal difference and goals scored.

West Ham would have to lose 1-0 at Stoke City AND Liverpool beat West Brom 2-1; or the Hammers lose 2-1 while it finished 3-2 to the away side at The Hawthorns, or so on. In addition, seventh-placed Southampton would have to be denied a win against visitors Crystal Palace.

Those scorelines would leave the London and Merseyside clubs level after 38 matches of a season lasting nine months.

If they were tied, the play-off would only be needed if their finishing spot is in a Europa League position, and Sevilla were to win next week's final in Basel.

A Premier League spokesperson confirmed an extra game could take place, although the likelihood is small.

League rules state: "If at the end of the season either the league champions or the clubs to be relegated or the question of qualification for other competitions cannot be determined because two or more clubs are equal on points, goal difference and goals scored, the clubs concerned shall play off one or more deciding league matches on neutral grounds, the format, venue and timing of which shall be determined by the board."

Manchester City are already assured of at least a Europa League place after winning the League Cup.

If they finish in the top four, that place in the Europa League third qualifying round will pass to the sixth-placed team.

The same will happen if they secure a place in the Europa League group stage by finishing fifth - and realistically, goal difference means City are unlikely to finish lower than fifth.

If Liverpool win the Europa League, they will qualify for the Champions League group stage. If Crystal Palace win the FA Cup, they will enter the Europa League at the group stage. If Manchester United win, that place will be given to the seventh-placed team.

There are no longer any Fair Play places allocated to the Europa League.

I do not think this will happen because we are going to win the Europa League on Wednesday.

Certainly do not want to go back to square one, having to start in the qualifying rounds from scratch. Preferably win next Wednesday to qualify for the Champion's League. A defeat would leave us with a chance of a straight run in all three domestic competitions.
